Hi all,
I've been busy assembling my first army, Chaos Space Marines, and I've finally gotten to a point where it starts to get interesting, which is why I decided to start this blog.
I got this blog hoping that I could get some tips & tricks to get my properly on my way by the dakka modeldeities & paintgods.
The stub of story I've come up with is that is a warband residing on an ancient forge world that got sucked into the warp. It's mines and factories became a focal point for lots of warring between different warbands all wanting in on the action, leaving the planet a completely devastated wasteland. This particular warband was the only band to stay behind, though maybe not voluntary (think wrecked spaceships and the like), to salvage what they could from the blackened husks of the mechanicus' workshops. A millenium went by and the warp transformed the cults Marines into mindless monstrosities of machine and daemon, with only the tiniest sliver of humanity remaining in but a few of their number.
(would love some flavour buffs telling me whether this is possible or not)
The look will be very mechanic, with no flesh showing if I can help it and loads of weathering (hey, they've been going for a millenium now). The environment (so basing, but also an accompanying board I'll be starting in some time) will be completely war-torn and muddy. Think Vraks and a WWI front line.
anyhoo, without further ado, my first stab at painting a miniature:
I think it came out ok for a first try, will repaint the base though, as that seems a little bland.
Also want to start using some weathering powders when I get my hands on some.
Anyway, break me down painting masters of dakka!

Well, the busy, busy time at the academy has finally come to an end so I finally have time to spend on 40k again.
Half of my Plague Marines are nearing completion
and I have primed my berzerkers (here a Skull Champion on the left and a normal 'zerker on the right)
(sorry for the shallow depth of focus on those)
Still need a new name for this warband, working on that as well.

I rather like the modified helmet effect, but I would recommend trying to make the front face look a bit more glass like. At the moment its a bit hard to distinguish the front from the rear face. Maybe green tinged and moss filled?

The Kasabian Cult? Sucked into the warp, transformed into a stupid, swaggering northern pub band and sent back to torment humanity's ears with sub-Stone Roses gak for eternity...
Yeah, sounds pretty hellish to me.
Um, nice models though...!

Likin the colour scheme a lot, looking forward to seeing the board you mentioned, a yellow tint to it would be interesting.
I'm also a fan of the heads and Flinty has a point about distinguishing the front of the head from the back. But glass sounds a bit tame for a chaos warband. Maybe gouge crude eyes and leering faces on the shoulder pad with a hobby knife, making it easy to pick out the faces with a wash of badab or devlan. Just a thought.

Hmm, didn't really bother me. I kinda envisioned that they would have fully enclosed helmets without eyeholes, trusting completely on their daemons within for guiding them into battle. *spooky*
now, for some terrain I'm working on:
Going, as mentioned, for the broken down industrial look. (will put a marine next to it for scale next time)
also a Tau bunker I'm doing for a friend:

Let me tell you, this is an amazing idea, and done wonderfully.
I really want to see more, specially how the terrain will look once painted and weathered.

Now there's an idea, and then some! Get a Chaos Warriors Champion Skull Head, or a Devasator Squad Servo Skull, and sit it inside the Shoulder Pads. Then, Drill, Knife and Dremel the Pad to make it look like it's been shot, and viola, done!
Very nice. In fact, if I come to do Chaos at all, I may have to steal your Shoulder Pad Heads. Do they fit out of the box, or do they need modification?

now that is a good idea, I will give it a whirl in the next batch.
normal marine helmets are too big to fit in the hole between 2 stuck together pads, so you'll have to cut/file the excess off or just use a blob of gs.
Sorry all about the general lack of updates. Fitting painting and modeling in between deadlines for essays, moving to a new home and enjoying the summer is hard.
