You need good lighting and a camera with a good macro focus mode. Both of these items are pretty inexpensive these days, especially with digital photography.
Also try playing about with manual modes for exposure and ISO, etc.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Tripod (or other method to stabilise the camera) is essential for close-up work.
Softened sunlight works well (if you have to use a flash, use an-off camera one - most built-ins put out 90% of their light in the first 30cm - enough to white out any close-up).
I'm a dyed-in-the-wool SLR user. Macro lens and setting. Manual focus. Tripod, mylar screen (screenprinting stuff) to soften the sunlight (which down under can be rather harsh and 'flat').
If I have to shoot indoors without access to good light, then my dedicated off-camera flash comes out. Dialled down to 1/16 power at 30cm leaves the subject well lit, and throws the background into near darkness (used this technique at cons when friends wanted me to photograph their stuff for them).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
