Been thinking about running an Avatar in my current Mech list, and instead of just having my troops riding around most of the time and contesting at the end, I thought about starting them out of the vehicles near the Avatar for fearless, and when the avatar dies, or it's getting to turn 3ish go and pick them up for contesting. Think this might work?

Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

Part of the benefit of having a mechanized list is that the enemy anti-troop weaponry has nothing to shoot at and you negate part of their effectiveness. You'd be giving this up with your strategy here.

*EDIT* As an Ork player, I'd love you for this. I don't have much in the way of anti-tank except for assaulting your vehicles, and if you're going to put your troops on the table so that I can get to them without having to kill a vehicle to get to them first, I'd be most appreciative.

I've seen such lists in the GT last year.
My opponents played mech Eldar with an Avatar running behind the tanks towards the enemy.
Well, both did not do too well vs my Chaos army, they finally died, one earlier one later.
I'm not really convinced about the effectiveness.

Well I guess my real issue that I have is, most of my troops just sit in my vehicles and don't do anything.

I might as well just do a DAVU at that point, just to conserve points, but if they are on the table it draws attention to them. I'm not a big fan of running DAVU.

What I like is: One they are fearless, and two they can be in cover and go to ground for a 3+ save. Allowing my empty transports to get side and rear shots even easier. Or tank shock and not worry so much about a DoG destroying my vehicle and troop choice inside. Then if an enemy is getting close I can just pick them up.

Don't forget, an Avatara needs to be fortuned when the enemy is able to target it or in cc.

As stated, play to your strengths. Every list has a theme which is where its best abilities are found. My footslogging Avatar list always does well. I've tried what you've tried and what basically happens is he gets left with some guardians guarding the home objective while the rest of the army balances that fine line between hitting hard but not too hard so they can keep it together. Either go all mech or no mech. Eldar are far behind the times with the codex and the number of viable builds are getting smaller every year.

Avatar fails due to not being mechanized, and not being a Farseer. Want Fearless? Get a Wave Serpent.

Avatar needs rehauling, to make him more viable for Aspect Warrior armies.

Rehauling?
Well, in the former codex, there was a Court of Young Kings led by an Avatar.
Why can't an Avatar be a bit faster? Wings, cavalry.

I remember. Very few people I know took it though because of lolBlackGuardians and a Seer Council of 5 Farseers.

The Avatar is really not worth it in mek armies.

He just doesn't fit the trend

I like to imagine the Emperor kills so many Orks that he ends up half buried beneath a pile of corpses, with only his head sticking out. A lone grot stumbles across him, and starts choking him.

Then Horus comes across the lone grot, somehow managing to kill the Emperor, and punts it into space.
