The thing I don't like about the current rules is "Gets hot". For example the mighty plasma cannon, it can devastate a terminator squad leaving them petty invulnerable saves to defend themselves but should you roll a one you take a wound with armour saves. Come on, if all that blows up in your face even power armour will melt like butter. OK I may have misinterpreted the rules, maybe it just gets hot to touch (which I see now is probably more likely) but still, if the best part of the heat of a star is in your weapon then the gun will probably melt if not your armour will. Thankfully I've never really had the problem of get's hot because the only army I've had with these weapons are my Chaos marines (which I don't use much and the plasma guns never roll ones to hit). Please vote in my poll below to tell me what you think.

I'm pretty sure they don't blow up, they just overheat. Otherwise you wouldn't get to shoot them on the next turn. Then again, you'd think overheating wouldn't kill them in the first place. Maybe their hands are just wounded and they can't fight anymore.

Yup, Get's Hot! just represents the weapon overheating and venting steam. It doesn't explode (Although they used to, back in 2nd edition).

The above two are correct. The way I see it, when you pass your armor save it just vents superheated steam. When you fail, thats because it blew up and killed you.

I don't think they should but I play orks and like weapons that explode in your face. Rules, wise, plasma weapons would need to be suitably epic in order to merit an absence of armor saves for the Gets Hot! rule. Given the way they act right now, armor saves are the only thing that lets them not be useless.

Thanks guys. I've been thinking about someone saying Plasma weapons would be useless if they killed you that easily. Thanks again for the info.

I think it should still allow armor saves for just a few reasons.
1: They probably have some sort of failsafe to prevent instant death if you are carrying a plasma gun
2: The rules represent the gun overheating. The gun is not completely melting and there is not a massive thermonuclear reaction flying into your face. If they wanted it to be like this they would have made it already. If the weapons even did this, then vehicles would take some penalty too.
3: NO ONE would take plasma guns on SM if there is a 1/6 chance that your plasma gun guy is now a radioactive pile of mush. My 5 plasma gun chosen squad would be very sad.

I had a five man Sternguard squad rapidfire their vengeance rounds. Two died from the four that had to take the test. If it wasn't for the armor saves the squad would have been totally screwed instead of kind of screwed. Gets Hot! weapons would be useless without an armor save.

I Have a blob squad of 30 guardsman with 2 plasma guns in it those guy have to be the luckiest models in the world the last 4 games i have played they have not "got hot" once thank the emporer. I just wanna see some sortta adverse affect to vehicles correct if i am wrong but i am pretty sure they dont over heat due to there superior cooling systems they should at least go out of commision until the end of the players next turn while crew try to collect themselves and repair the overheat

Yes.
Armor saves are the only reason plasmaguns DON'T suck huge amounts of grot droppings.

Mek, he is allways on the abusive side.
Easier to ignore him.
OT: As stated, its simply venting steam or getting hot, nothing too fatal.
If the weapon its self exploded, then it wouldnt be of use afterwards.

I'm confused... Don't they already allow armor saves? If you get a one you have to roll your armor save. So, isn't that an armor save? o_O

No yes, you're right. Yes no?
I think OP meant would 'Gets Hot!' be better if it didn't allow armor saves?
