I play marines... codex marines. My army got a massacre win first mission, and a tie second mission. Going into the 3rd mission, I was in second, playing against the guy in first. Unless I massacred him, I wasn't going to win. Whatever.

the problem was, he was playing monstrous creature nids. his army had a total 13 killpoints he could give up. Mine, because of the 3rd mission rules, had 30.

In the end, it was 14-9, in favor of him. why is it, that a rhino is worth 3 killpoints, when a squad of 3 carnifex rampaging across the table is worth only 1?
whatever, its just a game... but damn. Nids are powerful enough, did they really need such a huge boost in mission 3?

After the orbital strikes, Thunderhawk bombardments, Whirlwinds, Vindicators, fusion and starfire and finally Battle Brothers with flamers had finished cleansing the world of all the enemies of Man, we built a monastery in the center of the largest, most radioactive impact crater. We named the planet "Tranquility", for it was very quiet now.

I had the opposite experience in my 3rd round. I too was running mechanized marines with a bit of gunline-rhino-bunker going for it. Fortunately for me, my opponent was raider/ravager spam Dark Eldar.

I won't go into the details, but I got the 2nd battle point. (I killed 40 KP of DE while he killed 20 of me.)

Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

Hrm.

I play mechanized orks, and I had 36 killpoints; I played against drop-pod and mostly foot-slogging Space Wolves at the top table game 3 with 17 killpoints. I lost two units of deffkoptas during his turn1 shooting (he went first) to get a turn1 6 point lag, followed by an additional 3 point lag when he killed all my warbuggies...but went on to table him. I've gotta say, I find 40k the most fun when you're the least worried about missions and are just trying to kill your enemies.

I had 60+ KP with my DE, my opponent had 18 or so with his nids. and i still managed to shaft my opponent (poor guy...)

The end result was 3 KP to my 7KP after 6 rounds

I think you really needed to come to the table with a plan for each army you might face.
