Spain is a good bet, albeit one with very short odds. I happen to think England is a good bet, as we have a good squad and manager, and are scoring a lot of goals. That, allied to the fact the bookies don't fancy us as much as some other teams adds up to a good bet in my book.

Bet on England reaching the Quarter-Finals.

I predict that the Ivory Coast or Ghana will cause an upset of some sort.

Just save yourself the pain and back Australia. Our kangaroo overlords might then spare you when we crush the other nations under our gumboots.

Bet on a terrorist incident occurring during the event.

I'm backing Denmark, because my team (Sweden) didn't make it.
Realistically, I like Spain and Germany. They both played very well in the UEFA cup in Austria/Switzerland. If I had to pick one, I'd say Germany.

I dislike football intensely, Rugby is a far better game with better players, better teamwork, better attitude and better fans. A more gentlemanly game entirely which is ironic allowing for how much more violent it is. However I still follow the World Cup out of fierce nationalism at least until England get kicked out, which usually doesnt take too long. I might build up a decent fervour if England get to the semi finals or heaven forbid finals, but I wont count on our team to manage that. The only thing I can count the England 'team' to do is be self centered, self important, overrated, overhyped, overpaid, ignorant primadonnas with no sense of teamwork.
This is a good thing; because unlike many England fans within half an hour of our wet lettuces missing the critical last penalty or fumbling away a goal in extra time I no longer care.

Ha! Not a chance the Italians will do anything. I'd be surprised if they get into the 2nd round.

Can't stand Italy's world cup team. Bunch of diving sissies. Really a shame, since they have a few legitimately good players among the divers.
