So I bought DOW2 today, I downloaded it fron THQ. But it forced me to install Steam for it to work. But, I don't want Steam, I doubt I'll ever wanna play online I'd rather just play the single player campaign. So, if I uninstall steam, will DOW2 still work?

Don't think so, I think it needs steam to just boot up. But I don't know for sure.

that sucks.. what if ya wanna play but you don't have an internet connection? First it wanted to do steam and then it tells you to make a windows live account.. so you gotta set up 2 different accounts for online services.

I dunno I guess I'm just old fashioned, just bugs me how every new game has to be online somehow.

Admittedly, you can just use your Xbox Live account in lieu of the Windows Live one.

yeah theres no reason not to have steam, steam often has sales and it's often cheaper to buy games off of it rather than in stores

I just don't wanna use steam is all.. I know it's great for buying games and all that. Seems like a really cool network and all. But to make a super long story short, my girlfriend thinks steam is some kinda way to meet other gals online. So for my own health and well being I don't wanna use it and really don't need it since I mostly just use my PS3 for gaming, but I really wanted to check out DOW2, yet to play it I have to use steam :(

If you had simply pirated it, you would not have to deal with Malware being forcibly installed.

it does suck though. i just moved house and couldnt play because my internet hadnt been installed i think its poo that you cant play a game that you paid for offline

Tried to explain it to the GF, she just doesn't get it. So, it's easier just to not use it than try to explain it again. it's not like I'm a hardcore gamer that needs all that stuff anyway, I just play a video games occasionally.

So if you do need steam though, then why do you need windows live? I mean, if windows live keeps track of achievements, why can't steam do it? that also seemed really dumb for me. I guess I can understand one or the other, but why do you need 2?

Wish I didn't blow $30.. but the game seems fun enough so far. Doubt I'll get chaos rising though. I'd rather just stick to consoles. More fun playing on a sofa anyway. Hopefully that space marine ps3 game will be good.

Steam is simply a distribution tool that installs updates, etc.

Windows Live actually stores your achievements, game information, et all.

GTA 4 for the PC can be even worse, with the Rockstar VIP club thing.

Cheat on your girlfriend with steam, its the only way.

I feel your pain mate, you should try getting a girl who's not paranoid which this one seems to be.

I live in the country, so I need to use satellite internet.

With bandwidth limits and everything, so that essentially meant that I couldn't download the enforced updates. I don't play online, I don't need updates. But for the steam client, you must have it fully updated to play. Once it's updated, you can turn steam to offline mode and play. But you have to update it and register it.

And I loathe that feature, almost as much as I loathe Ultramarines and certain writers.

However, with my new internet service, I was happy to find out we have five or so hours of limitless download usage every morning.

Now, rumour says that if you can put it on a friend's computer, download it, then copy certain files over to your computer, install steam, and then put the files in their proper folders, you can get around the download issue.

But, as for the girlfriend thing: Download it, and point out very simply to her that Gears of War is most certain not for picking up girls. If she can't be bothered to check something out to verify it, or the validity of someone's claim about it, it's up to you how to deal with her.

See, exactly! Gwar! has it right - just pirate everything and you never have to deal with these kind of problems!

Honestly, Steam is a fantastic program, and it's one of the safest out there. All of my friends have been using it for years to great effect, and as long as you follow the rules, you'll never have any problems. Just explain to your girlfriend that it's safe and completely unrelated to picking up chicks. Heck, download/install it while she's in the room, and show her every feature of it - show her that you can't (well, not reliably) find other girls out there using Steam.

Or don't like having some program collect personal data about you and send it off to some corporation to do god knows what to it? What if you feel that if you bought a game, you should be able to play it whenever you bloody want?

Well if you're not using Windows, you generally don't have many games that are worth the trouble to their manufacturer to arm with protection like this or are old enough that the technology wasn't available.

Even then a patch/hack/whatever and like magic the problem is usually gone

Exactly my thoughts. I live in a small town. I get internet by wi-fi - it can disconenct me if the weather is not too good (like yesterday - we have heavy rains and floods in the whole south Poland and it can't be helped - I was out of internet). But I want to play the game and I don't want to play multi-player online thing - just single player.

Additionally - I don't like the idea of installing tons of additional software that will validate is my copy of the game legal - all it does is require you to have internet connection, additional memory / faster CPU and so on (as they are additional software running parallel to everything else). There are tons of pirated copies that do not require you to have all of that.

I have bought all the games I play legally and I don't want to be punished for that.
Steam is great for buying games? Great but I like to go to a normal shop so I don't need it.
Live collects my scores? I don't want them to be collected - I play games for fun not to show how great I am. I know that I'm awesome!

I signed up for steam a while back and mentioned it to her, then she checked it out and on the about us page it said something about how they're an online network where you can meet people. she never bothered to read about how it's really for just buying and playing games and is too stubborn to find out more. So, I just gave up because it's easier to just not use it than try to explain it all over again. I know I'm making her out to sound like she's paranoid or controlling or whatever, but she's not. she's actually super awesome. she doesn't mind that I post on dakka But then, what are my chances of finding a new gal on dakka? .....

But yeah, as far as networking goes, I'm sure you'd be much more likely to find a hookup here on Dakka than you would on something like Steam(ing pile of dogsh**)...
