So I am tossing around the idea of starting a mercenary type army for 40k using several existing races, as well as some possible new ones......trying to stay fluffy but does anyone have any suggestions as to an existing codex I could use that is fairly well balanced / versatile....winning games is not important to me at all being fund to build and paint rules everything for me....

Really what I am thinking is if you were the captain of a merchant ship, who would you hire to protect your goods as you went planet to planet.

What I am tossing around right now...

IG style list (although I must admit I have collected so many guard armies the prospect slightly bores me and would love to try playing something different)

Rogue Trader style commander with full retinue... Command Squad

Mercenary Human / Abhuman Troops Power Armoured Squad Leaders....

Skimmer / Looted type vehicles.... (thinking of kitbashing a hammerhead Valkary and Chimera)

Mercenary Tau Sniper Team or similar.... (Counts as Ratlings?)

Eldar Exodite / Dark Eldar Exodite Heavy Weapons

Hrud with Gauss Guns

Kroot Warriors w/ Hounds

Ogryns

Blood Axe Commandos

Elemental type warriors (Dryads)

I would love your thoughts, suggestions, input, etc.

I would love an "Auxiliaries" codex. Then again, I'd also love a cultists book. I just want more fluffy and ineffective crap in the game, really. I'd love to do games of Arbites vs. Genestealer cults or plague zombies to tell you the truth.

If you want a "safe" answer, your best bet would be to go as either Tau or Guard. If you're willing to take a risk, go Inquisition (WH/DH) with Allies.

As Guard, you've got humans (Guardsmen, Conscripts, Veterans, & Storms) of various flavors, along with Enginseer & Servitors or Psyker Battle Squad. Plus you have abhuman Ogryns & Ratlings & Sentinels for modeling variety.

Tau are more limited, with just Kroot & Vespids.

Inquisition (WH freakshow) can mix with Guard pretty nicely, tho their book is likely to be redone sooner rather than later, with big changes.

I'd recommend Guard.

I thought the inquisition fluff would fit....

Rogue Trader = Inquisitor

Guard Allies = Hired Mercenaries

Maybe I wait for the new book, because I have heard rumors that much like the DE they are completley redesigning how they play and who and how they can join with.....only time will tell.....worse case scenario I end up with pretty miniatures for another project....

Quite like the Idea of the Loxatl as well thanks for the tip!
