Subject: Asphalt/Cityscape bases?

Any advice for bases set in a ruined city? I'd like them to look asphalt-y.
I was thinking sand, the painting the base fortress gray and drybrushing the top of the sand black and then another shade of gray, but how should I simulate cracks in the pavement? Should the bases' rims be grey or black?

Heres a technique i will be using...for my vehicle display base.
Use really thin sheet cork, cut it to the base shape and size. Add small patches of fine sand to get a little rubble and texture here and there. Spray it black, Drybrush with a dark gray, Work your way into a medium gray, and highlight just the rubble with a slightly brownish gray. This way you have some more color and you have a great dark city base.
I also heard of using greenstuff, rolling it out, putting fine sand into it and kneading it together, then applying that to the base and flattening it out. This way seems like it could work well for asphalt, i for one just dont want to put green stuff on every base i have. Costly and a risk if it is not effective enough.

There is an attitude that not having an insanely optimized, one shot, six stage, omnidirectional, inevitable, mousetrap of an assassin list army somehow means that you have foolishly wasted your life building 500 points of pure, 24 karat, hand rolled, fine, cuban fail. That attitude has been shown, under laboratory conditions, to cause cancer of the fun gland.

I definitely like the idea of using cork with sand on it to simulate cracks in the pavement.
And I like those resin bases but they're a bit pricy, at least if I want all the 25mm ones for my troops. Maybe for my Dreads or Vets/HQs.

Is there a Vallejo Scenics that is similar to sidewalks in color?
As for your bases, how ruined is your city going to be? If it is totaled you can just pile rubble on their bases. If it is just old and crumbly then you will be looking at adding mostly undamaged detail with some rubble.
I prefer http://www.forgecraftgames.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=22
As their bases are less then 1$ apiece. I have not purchased any but I only need like 80 to do my full guard army.

To be honest I was going for something more like "poorly maintained road" style bases. Very granular pavement with lots of cracks, and a little bit of grass growing through those cracks.

I think making your own would be the best. Just because, NO one will have the same type of base as you. different styles would be easier to make on your own as well and also be cheaper.
For instance i got the cork sheets for about a dollar a peice at my local Michaels and I always prefer to do my own. This way i can do a little modelling and touching up here and there without as much hassle.

Yeah, I'd definitely prefer to do my own. Those vallejo textured paints sound pretty damn cool though, maybe that combined with the cork is what I'm looking for.

That may work, as long as you can scratch the vallejo stuff so that it looks cracked. Try stuff out in the end your opinion matters the most.

Go to walmart get some corkboard you want the stuff in a roll. If you can't find the roll stuff there go to staples or a teacher supply store you want the really thin stuff not the 1/4" sheets. Tear it how you want glue this to the base leaving some overhang the edges let dry. Cut the over hanging cork flush with the top of the base. Paint with the black lava let dry. Add grass to the cracks spray with sealer let dry then add the fig.
