Adolescent Youth on Ultramar
|
Howdy,
Long time lurker around this forum, it's time I register and share some of my miniatures.
I finally decided to buy Assault on Black Reach and tried to paint those miniatures. While I was painting those, I was in one of those poor light source room and upon completing a Tactical Squad and couple of Ork Boyz Mob, I thought I did well. Now after my old roommate moved out, I get to move in the new room with full-brighted light source and took some shots. Checking out those shots make me realized I do missed details and had some sloppy painting. (Realizing it's my first so it's okay to try) I will repaint with more details and hopefully it will be good this time around.
I decided to go with Ultramarines and halfway painting those Tactical squad, I thought about doing other chapter but it was too late and will start a new army with different chapter. When I move to Orks, I decide not to stick with Goff clan but something of my own. It doesn't have a clan name yet but I do have few ideas that might give a start.
Please share some comments and feedback, I would like to know what I can do better.
There are more shots in the gallery if you want to check it out.
I'm planning on doing the base after the army is completed with painting. I'm doing the sand/grass theme base.
EDIT: Fixed the broken link.

Models looks good. Would look great with just a coat of wash.

I agree, specially on the Orks. Washes are fantastic little products. I have to say it looks like your off to a pretty good star as far as painting goes. The only thing is the paint looks a little thick here and there, so Id suggest thinning your paints down a bit with some water. Check out the tutorial section to learn the right and wrong ways of doing it
Nice work

I like the Orks. I like the blue you've chosen to do your armies in. It's very bright. I am very fond of bright colors.

For first time painting this is pretty good, and a believable first time painting. I've seen some "first time" threads and have found it way to hard to believe. You've got a great start!!! *thumbs up*

Very good job for the first time! They look much better than my first minis...
Look for the recipe for washes by Les from Awesomepaintjob.com. It's cheaper than buying GW washes them and they work great. However, GW washes do fine too, though they are expensive and you can use a lot of Black Wash pretty quickly.
Look forward to seeing more painted models!

I did used the wash on both of my Tactical squad and Ork Boyz. I primed my Tactical squad with Chaos Black and then painted them with Regal Blue and finish with Badab Black wash all over before starting on the details. For the Ork Boyz, I only did the green wash (forgot the name) on the arms to make sure it looks realistic.
Is it better to use repeatitive wash until we get the results to look good?

Most people slap a coat of Delvan Mud over everything to give a slightly dirty, weathered look. As it's a brown, rather than black, it gives a more natural shading to everything too.
It seems to be the one pot of wash that everyone goes through much faster than everything else

I would do some more highlighting and then wash the models down with devlan mud.
Loooking pretty darn good tho.
Just my input,

Last Remaining Whole C'Tan

First off, you've done better then most on your first job. Here are my tips, as I also started pretty recently ("recently" being about a year and a half ago):
1.) Good lights are a must have. I prefer 6500 degree lights, ideally incandescent rather then CFL. I have overhead florescent and use a pair of the 150 watt 6500's in 2 different desk lamps from opposite directions. Good lighting and a comfortable chair are probably the best investments you can make, right off the bat. Also a netbook or PC nearby, for MP3's and reference.
2.) In some places (the SM leg detail), your paint is a little thick. This is a mistake made by approximately every single painter for the beginning part. I'd recommend getting some flow improver, mixing that in the correct ratio with water (10:1 water to improver) and keeping the mixed batch in an eyedropper bottle. Use that to thin your pain a little - one drop for every 2 to 3 drops of paint. I'd also recommend putting your paint in the same eyedropper bottles, as it saves paint and prevents messes - that's assuming you are an idiot like me who literally cannot go 5 minutes without knocking over an open paint pot. But, you might not be, so that's your call.
3.) I think Badab Black might generally be a little too dark to use on either marines or orks. As others have said, devlan mud is a good middle ground. The exception would be Goff leather pants or any other black leather, and of course, it's perfect for weapons.
4.) Brown Ink is really awesome for anything gold, like chest eagles and such. I haven't had much luck with it on anything else, but it really rocks for that one thing.
5.) Get some pink soap (or equivalent) to clean your brushes! It took me a year to learn you could use brushes more then 4 or 5 times before they got all frizzy.
