For me it was a long difficult road.
My List:
Wolf Lord w/JP,FB,SS, WTN, MB, Saga of the Bear
Wolf Priest w/JP, WTN, MB
Rune Priest w/JP, Chooser of the Slain Murderous Hurricane, Living Lightning
2 Wolf Scouts x5 w/mb, 1 Flamer
3 Grey Hunter Packs x10 w/2 MG, PF, MOTW, DP
2 Grey Hunter Packs x10 w/2 Flamer, PF, MOTW, DP
3 Skyclaw Assault Packs x10 w/PF, MG
The independent characters lead the skyclaws.

Game 1:
Daemons (fate crusher)
Fateweaver
Blue scribes
3 Blood crusher x4 w/fury,Icon, Instrument
4 Pink Horrors x10 w/bolt (one had changeling)
Plague Bearers x11 w/instrument
Seekers x10
Daemon Prince w/flight, iron hide, unholy might
Daemon Prince w/MOT, bolt, Daemonic gaze unholy might

This was a bloodbath if I have ever saw one. I lost the objective placement, but made him take turn one. On my turn one I had already deployed the skyclaws, and the flamer pods came down first. There was a key moment where I had toatly made a boneheaded decision, and took a full assault squad (w/lord) into a 4 man blood crusher unit. I thought that they had 2 attacks base, well I was wrong and I lost a lot of marines to PW. At the end of the turn I had put a wound on each blood crusher, but lost the assault, because I had all of my claws get clipped. I rolled my LD test, and didn't roll snake eyes (shocked), but lucky for me I rolled a 1 for my Int test, he caught me, and I made 5 armor saves. Other then that I didn't have much else happen in the turn. The next turn he had 1 horror squad die to deep strike (free VP), and a whole lot of pain come down. He tried to breath of chaos a GH squad, and killed 3, he assaulted with a crusher squad (through cover), and I was able to drop 1 of them. He took Fateweaver and assaulted a pod, but failed to do anything (go AV12), and that was about it. On my 2nd turn I hit his Seekers squad with murderous hurricane (who needs Jaws) and killed 5 outright. I had a squad of GH shoot and assault 11 plague bearers and annihilate them to the man (Mark of the Wolfen is sweet). I assaulted into the daemon prince/crusher/ GH melee with my wolf priest, and a full assault squad, but I made the next biggest mistake of my life and forgot to use preferred enemy on the assault. The wolf lord dropped the 4 man unit of crushers to 2 and held his own. Then there was turn 3 it was more of the same for him, and he was able to knock a GH squad to 3 models, the Priest was holding his own in the middle. My turn 3 I had 2 pods come down on objectives that were not held and had my Rune Priest join the scrum in the middle of the board. I was able to hip shot Fateweaver and wound him, and make him flee like the pansy he is. Unfortunately during the assault phase the wolf lord finally fell to the crushers ( the only time he died in the tournament). Turn 5 ended with me not being able to get my wolf scouts to run far enough to contest the objective.
Final score 13(me)-12, and I managed to kill 1648 VP's , he got 1750.
Lessons learned:
Pay attention to what I am assaulting, because it can hurt a lot.
Remember Preferred enemy.

Game 2
Chaos Marines
2 Daemon Prince w/MOS, wings, Lash
Grater daemon
3 Chosen x7 w/aspiring champion, 4 plasma guns each
3 CSM x10 w/melta gun x2,icon chaos glory, and rhinos
2 CSM x10 w/icon chaos glory, lascannon
2 Havoc squads x6 w/ 4 autocannon each

This game was the worst ass-beating I have taken in a while, and it began before turn one. The first thing I noticed was the fact that he had 3 squads of chosen with plasma guns, and I didn't want to see my assault squads cut down on turn one, so I started all reserves. His first turn was deploying, and this is nothing against him, but it took forever (almost 15 minutes) Then it was my turn 1. I had 2 flamer pods, and one melta pod drop. In that turn I killed 4 chosen, and 6 CSM. I also immobilized a rhino. His turn 2 was brutal, because he managed to kill almost 20 marines in that turn. My turn 2 NOTHING came in from reserves. I lost more marines, and was hurting in a bad way. His turn 3 he blew up a pod or two, and broke my last squad on the table. My turn 3 1 squad of scouts came in and that was it. They flamed a chosen squad killed them and then sat there twiddling their thumbs. His turn for scouts die, falling back marines are assaulted again and get cut down to 2 men. My turn 4 two pods come in (better late than never....), the last scout squad, and the wolf priest assault squad, and rune priest assault squad. The wolf lord is mia. In this turn I killed very little, put a wound or 2 on a MC. His turn 5, he tries to lash my assault squad, and the rune priest says NO SOUP FOR YOU! Then he killed my scouts who were locked in CC, killed a few assault marines and that was it. My turn 5 the lord comes in (fashionably late), and then I had a GH squad in death range of 2 MC, so I assaulted and hoped to get lucky, well if you are reading this than you probably can guess how it turned out. I also shot a rhino, and assaulted the squad inside, then made them run off the board. The rune priest tries to use his murderous hurricane, but the warp says NO (11). Then it was his turn 6 he lashed my rune priest and lord's squads, wiped out the GH unit that made the CSM run away, and dropped the wolf priest squad down to 2 men. My turn 6, I detached the wolf priest and added him to the wolf lords squad, and the rune priest was able to make a last second jump to get in to assault.
Final Score 768 (me)-1385
Lessons learned:
The dice gods hated me.
Expensive units can come in handy sometimes.
I should have started the Assault marines on the board, and used the scouts to prevent me from getting plasma to death.

Game 3:
Mech Eldar
Autarch w/fusion gun
Eldrad w/warlocksx6 (2 embolden, 3 destructors, 1 enhance) wave serpent w/spirit stones, TLML
3 Fire Dragons x5 wave serpent w/spirit stones, shuriken cannon, TL shuriken cannon
2 Dire Avengers x5 wave serpent w/ spirit stones, shuriken cannon, TLML
3 Dire Avengers x5
2 Vipers w/scatter lasers, shuriken canon
3 Falcon w/ Holofields, spirit stones, scatter laser, shuriken cannon.
This game for me was a win or go home round because I was in 5th place going into the round with 21 points, and I needed a fill massacre to get into the semi-finals. This game he won the roll to go first and made me go first. I deployed all my skyclaws with the wolf [roest in front giving cover to the others. (not wanting a repeat of last round) and sent down the flamer pods and one melta pod. I deep struck them to the center of the board, and then moved & ran my skyclaws. Then I took my turn 2 and I had all my reserves come in. I decided to place my melta pods about 12 inches from his table edge, and put the scouts in cover in the middle of his board edge. I am going to save some time and give this in the short version. I was able to get 9 kp turn 3, and he had none. After that it was m skyclaws chasing down eldar tanks and popping them w/meltas. The highlight of the match was when I sent the wolf priest and skyclaws into the council and wiped them out to the man. We decide to call it at the begining of turn 5 because he only had 2 tanks left and a few infantry hiding on the board.
Final score: 24 (me)-0
Lessons learned:
Eldar are fragile.

In the end it was the other SW player w/55 points, BA(catpeeler) 54, and me with 45. I beat out the necron player who used all the time and then some because he was TFG.
Overall I was most pleased with the quality of games at the store, and thought that Rivals did a wonderful job hosting

Nice report. Glad you did well enough to proceed to the semis. Should something happen to the 4 people in front of me for points, I will see you there. Elsewise, I will happily help you tweak your list if you need (i.e. let you pound on my army a bit

Cheers

If I give you a cookie, will you go away? If I give you the bag, will you go far, far away?

OP:

I'm curious about your list. You have an eclectic assembly of models, and the "popular" things are noticeably missing. No JotWW on your rune priest, no longfangs, no Ragnar, no Logan....the things that make people wary of Space Wolves. What strategery went into your list building? Do you plan on making any changes? I'm curious about the choices that led to the list you presented.

I can answer some of that, as I helped him develop the list (there's only 2 pods with flamers, btw--not 3 of each).

The main strength of the list is that there are 93 freaking marines. With that many bodies, he can easily lose 60 or 70... and still win without any problems. The other main strength of the list is the 30 skyclaws. With +2 attacks on the charge, these guys are freaking vicious. They also nicely answer the once-the-pods-are-down-the-army-has-no-mobility problem.

All in all, he's got plenty of melta spread around (supplemented with bombs & fists), plenty of mobility, the ability to create terrain/obstacles where needed and the list is durable/forgiving to a rediculous degree.

Truth be told, it's the only variant of the SW list that worries me.

Inside a pretty, pretty pain cave... won't you come inside?

I play against rednekgunner's list as well and second the notion that it's just EXHAUSTING to have to cut through that many Marines. I play orks and we do fine killing Marines, provided we have numbers, but it's hard to sufficiently outnumber 90+ Marines, especially ones that are all basically assault Marines and in your face with drop pods and/or jumppacks. Whatever you charge, that unit counter charges, and you get assaulted next turn by one of his buddies. You multicharge and you may not win combat, so Fearless wounds, dwindling numbers, and no S4 next turn.

Best luck I've had is with kans and burna boyz, and also coordinated mass assault, but even then it's a tough fight and if the dice aren't with me, forget it. It's an interesting list, for sure.

Well, the easy answer is I like to design lists that people typically don't run. As to the "popular" things missing, I build a list like the 1980 USA mens hockey team, it may not have the popular or even best players, but they work great as a team. I chose not to use JOTWW because I play tested it and I got tired of Carnifexs and the like matrix dodging out of the way. I was actually considering using long fangs, but the real issue is set up. With a drop list I have typically nothing on the board 1st turn (mostly because I want to go 2nd), and long fangs would give me the desire to want to go first thus messing up the rest of my synergy. As to the special characters, I for the longest time was trying to find a way to make Ragnar work in the list, but alas 245 for a 3+/4+ w/out eternal warrior was not worth it to me. That and he was to good in CC, meaning he assaults, and then gets shot to death the next turn. As to changes I plan on making for the semis, I don't think there is anything I will change. I also feel that this army has a psychological advantage as well, because there is no popular choice, but to quote the eldar player I played in game 3, "I can't kill that many marines, no really I don't have the firepower." Thanks for the post.
