I took my Pain Train to 'Ardboyz.
6 Ironclads w/all trimmings
3 laserbacks w/ 5 man scoring squads
Librarian w/Null Zone, Might of the Ancients
Master of the Forge w/2 servitors
9 man Assault Squad w/Pfist sarge in rhino
10 Grey Knights w/ 2 psycannons
3 landspeeders w/ heavy bolters
Saturday: game #1:
I played against Guard. Normally this would be pretty much auto-defeat, but these weren't terribly serious Guard. He had sisters, cruising around with flamers. He had a pair of Hellhounds, he had a bunch of squads w/ heavy bolters. He had an ordinary Leman Russ or two. Very little that could hurt the dreads.
I played carefully, it soon emerged that his poor list was the result of game rust, he hadn't been playing in a while, and he made a number of mistakes. I didn't let up and was able to extract all 24 points from this round.
Game #2:
This round I was up against Fargo's Blood Angels, a dangerous blitz list. I'd beaten player A's variant a few days ago, and I had some confidence in this matchup, particularly in a VP scenario. It all came down to the melta luck. He had it and I didn't. I simply couldn't hurt his land raiders, not with meltas and not with charging Ironclads. It didn't help that Mephiston's strength 10 power never got stopped.
He accomplished the rarely managed feat of destroying all of my Ironclads. At game's end I'd killed one predator, and was hiding in the corner with my remaining units. Total defeat.
Game #3:
This round I faced off with Primarch's Space Wolves. It was pretty much a nightmare matchup for me. He had a chainfist in every squad, and 22 missile launchers. His army was protected from assault by 3 lone wolves with storm shield/chainfist. There was simply nothing for it. I took the easy KP from the fast movers for this mission, then settled in to try and take some points off of him by slogging the dreads over. We ultimately burst through the Lone Wolves, but the countercharge with his wolf guard was decisive. He was able to head me off, and his missile launchers had taken my 3 KP units out as well.
Game's end I was once again reduced to a scattered few units here and there across the board, though I did still have one Ironclad embroiled in a unit of Space Wolves.
Fortunately for me Atlanta is a hotbed of 40k. We had a store that couldn't hold theirs on sat, so I headed across town the next day for another stab at qualifying.
Game #1:
I faced off with shoot and scoot Eldar, normally one of my banes. My luck was in, however, and my missiles wrought havoc among his skimmer tanks, despite holo fields. At the same time the Librarian was doing better than normal at stopping Eldrad's powers. I was on track to another first round massacre.
Then, disaster struck, as the Avatar rampaged through my dreads, killing 2 and immobilizing 2 more, bringing my army to a shuddering halt. I clung to the objectives, and through some fortuitous rolls and the world's bravest storm guardian squad I was able to keep this one to a tie.
Game #2:
I played Guard again, this time a much better variant. Only real flaw was that in preparation for the third mission he'd left his vendettas at home. He had ample anti-tank firepower for my dreads, he went first, and it was corners VP's. This is the match I'm most proud of, as I laid waste to his forces.
My dreads stomped across the board, through some houses and into his tanks, and just absolutely cleaned up. I was able to take a major victory, and score three quarters for a total of 20 points this round. First time I've ever killed a medusa squadron (Siege Hammer! I killed one by rolling a 2!), and a manticore (heavy bolter land speeders got round the side and let him have it).
Game #3:
I faced off with a Nob Biker player who'd abused my pirate orcs on my last outing. He didn't really understand how fighty the dreads were, and he didn't play very carefully, because he'd already qualified. He rushed me with his Nob Biker units and was appalled when they got massacred. I spread out and chased down the remaining Orc units, ending with full points.
That was good enough for third the second day, so I qualified for round 2 by the skin of my teeth!

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

Congrats! I don't know if your "pain train" is a good idea for the semi finals, if only because it cant really deal with guard which I'm sure will be very prevalent there.

You don't think so? I seems to me the list counters guard well, but a lot depends on who goes first.
Hey FKE, how did the Grey Knights work for you? Have you considered using them as two five-man squads? It would cost more (drop a speeder maybe) but that way you could get more psycannons if you have the models, and an additional scoring unit.

Thanks for the congrats, guys!
-Fargo: He had Mephiston and two land raiders, one with the FNP Terminators and one with Death Co. + Reclusiarch + Corbulo. He had 3 Baal predators and some scorings stuff
-Pain train: It's my best tourney list at 2k (cept Daemons on a good day), but it doesn't go up well to 2.5K, no good slots left. I'm debating using another force for the next round, probably will depend on the missions.
It's my most successful list vs. Guard, but that's not saying much.

Ironclads? Walking across the board? Assault Squad? In a razorback? No JUMP PACKS??? Not how I'd play them... but it worked! I'm surprised! Good on ya! I agree with several posters that the list could use some minor retooling first... bring it to Dakka before you go! And good luck!

The list is pretty strong actually. With the current metagame of Str6 spam (multi-lasers, scatter lasers etc.) and autocannon spam, walking Ironclads isn't a bad idea. They are good at assault with a nice alpha-strike from the HK Missiles. Personally I'd make some changes to the list but it's a tough fight no doubt. It seems to work better at ~2k though.

Nice job walt as always the Pain Train Delivers. If I were you scaling up to 2500 I would cut the GK squad and possibly the HB speeders and add Melta combi melta 5 man tac squads in drop pods. 2-3 would be awsome give you a first turn chance to knock out tanks and if he reserves stuff that just means the pain train gets unhurt as it moves up. Just some thoughts goodluck in Semis!

Alright, going down in order on the things I haven't replied to:
Grey Knights: They were alright, very helpful in the multi-objective missions, where they stretched out to cover a few, and couldn't be broken by the PBS's. They were the only unit to score a kill when Fargo was wiping me out. They held up the Wolf Lord in my game vs. Primarch, basically through blind luck.
I liked em in one squad just because that's all the psycannon models I owned. Also, I guess, it's good for KP.
@Yermom: I don't really have a way to deal with Guard. I don't even know of one, aside from Mech Orks that go first. Do you have any ideas?
@BBF: Thanks man! It's nice to be going forward. Even nicer, ATL has a round 2, so I don't have to troop 2 hours to Borderlands.
@Pipealley, Zayl: Thanks for the appreciation, I really do like this list. It's somewhat unconventional, but fully competitive vs. your basic mech MEQ enemy, and often a spoiler for the more oddball builds out there.
@Dash: Heh. I like the name, not sure where it came from though, I don't recall.
@Pvt. Jet: I'll post the list up on the dakka main page, get some ideas for the other 500 points. The walking clads are actually pretty good though, proxy em out, you'll be surprised.
@MOM: What would you change? You are definitely right that it works better at 2k, those speeders and grey knights didn't pull their weight at all.
@Cajun: Combi-melta drop pods is pretty cool, but as MOM says, it'd be a lot of KP to give up, and just one melta per squad isn't a terribly sure thing. Is there anything else I could drop that would be better? Can Vanguard get a pod and multiple meltaguns?

I remember where it came from, and Fargo probably does, too... You coined it yourself in the parking lot one night after our weekly Wednesday gaming. A tournament was coming up that weekend, and you claimed to me and Fargo (WWE style) that your dread list was going to run over everyone. Said something like "WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO, WHEN THE PAIN TRAIN COMES FOR YOU??" Totally hulk hogan-esque... To top it all off, you emphatically pulled twice on some imaginary cord like a conductor sounding a train's horn.

I rarely think, "hey I want that army" - but, I want your army! Nice job putting together a unique but effective force. For 2500 you could consider dropping one dread for Th and Storm shield guys in a landraider - they can take down MCs that give dreads trouble, I'd think. MM bikes sound cool too.
