After reading this post

I realised thats nothing like me, I tend to work out the units I want, buy them, and methodically work throught them all untill I've finished when I buy new models.

For example, When Daemons cam out I got the spearhead and enough stuff for a 1/5K ish Khorne Daemon army, when I reached the last unit to paint, I bought some more daemon units to make them multifaith, and worked through them, followed by......

Anyone else this rigid and OCD?

Yep, I've almost finished 2K of IG that I bought a few months ago.

Before that I bought 3.5K of Orks in one go (all built and painted before anything else was bought) and before that I bought a marine battle company in one go. (all built and painted before I bought the orks)

some 23 years ago I laughed at a friend of mine who had loads of unpainted figures, I resolved to always paint the figures I have and not buy stuff untill all my other stuff was painted.

He laughed at me....

He was right.

I am however getting better, for example I have a 4000 point tomb kings army sitting on the shelves, but resisting doing anythung with it till my 4000 point skaven horde is mostly done (about 200 figures painted, so getting there this year!)

I think most people flit arround like lost butterfly's, which suits GW.

My comments are my own, and mine own alone. If you have any complaints, please report to Mr Spanky who will take them down for you.....

I was once a youth with load of yet to be opened boxes, blisters piled in a closet, and a lot of half opened minatures. I had no idea what I had.

And then I moved in with my girlfriend

That was the best thing that every happened to me as a gamer. It made me focus. After we moved it I stared in awe at what I had. I made a commitment to focus on building, painted, and finishing armies. I sold all my "extra" stuff i didn't need. I sold a bunch of armies in a year, at least 7. From there I made a commitment keep few armies, and focus on finishing here'st he results.

Skaven: fully painted 2250 list with plenty of options.
Demons: fully painted 2250 list.
High Elves: 50% painted, working on currently.
Imperial Guard: the next in line.
Iron Warriors: a side project I am doing for myself, this is my "take a break" army.
Orcs and Goblins: the last fantasy army, i have most of what i'll need.

I've been on both ends of the spectrum: making good money while you're young and still living at home is a great way to amass far too much crap you don't really need.

Now that I'm all growed up (in theory at least), I just can't justify buying everything on a whim, so I've completely cut the impulse purchases to focus on building, modeling and painting a unit at a time.

That's pretty much how I operate more or less. Once in a while I get distracted by a unit or a model but I generallybuy all I need for an army then start a new a project once it is finished

Glad to hear I'm not the only one lol!

@Hungryp, yeah i think thats what happened to me, once I had a mortgage etc, Impulse buying wasn't an option, and now it's just working through my eldar army - 4 tanks and 4 squads to go

Unlike most of my clubmates, I don't succumb to the shiny of the month syndrome.

Two of my armies I have played since the RT days (1987-8), the third was from their incept in 3rd ed (DH) because Eldar were being whined about - and the fourth and last has been a work in progress since 2nd ed (guard).

I'm only adding one more unit to my Eldar army (new Fire-prism because I want a SECOND one and I can't get the hybrid anymore), and my guard just needs all of its infantry finished (all 113 remaining mudfeet).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

Sometimes, I go through a period of buying something new every week, and getting really behind on my painting.

In this hobby what I love the best is assembling, I enjoy putting the figures into interesting and dynamic poses more than I enjoy painting them afterwards. So, sometimes I'm wild and buy lots of new things.

But most of the time I'm restrained and don't buy something unless everything else is painted.

At the moment I plan:
Chaos Space Marines 4000pts (almost done, just the plague marines, raptors and superheavy to go!)
Wood Elves 2500 (30% painted I guess)
Imperial Fists (1500pts, should be quick to paint, but I'm going to buy all the models in one go for once!)

Chaos Space Marines, The Skull Guard: 4500pts
Fists of Dorn: 1500pts
Wood Elves, Awakened of Spring: 3425pts

Im partially like that. Im not one to just jump from army to army, I tend to stick with one. But I also have a thing where the entire unit has to at least be assembled and based. If Im going to paint skin, they ALL have to have the skin done so non look out of place. When its metal time, I paint ALL the metal, again so non are the odd man out.

So I guess Im slightly OCD as far as that goes

I go for about 2 or 3 at a time so when I get bored with one I can start the next. I currently have a 15 point Circle Orboros Army more than halfway finished (still painting the Warpwolf and one Argus not assembled) ~1800 Orcs & Goblins, my 750 GC Mordheim Orcs & Goblin Army and ~700 points in Dwarves.

So, I only own two armies, and eldar one from a decade ago when I was in high school, and my imperial guard army now. I was so distraught with how poorly my eldar army fared back in the day that, after a few years off, when I wanted to start painting again I started with a different army. Other than that, I've had little desire to start a new one, as I'm nowhere near exhausting the possibilities with my current army and I honestly don't want to spend the time to learn how to play with a new army all over again as I'm still working out the strategic kinks with my current one. Also, I've now really gotten down the tempo for my current model range, and I know it would be a rather awkward process getting a new army back up to assembly-line speed.

As for loads of grey models, that hasn't been a problem for me, for the most part. I got into this hobby both times for the painting first, not the playing. The only time I had a serious grey-gap was when I bought a bunch of stuff to get my army up to get to 1000 points so I could start playing. Once I closed that gap then I started buying boxes one at a time (in part due to economic constraints), and the only stuff assembled but unfinished is the stuff I'm currently painting.

I have definitely known some people that have had the maddening drive to switch armies every few months. I know someone who is on his third (or fourth?) guard army because he keeps on switching off and eventually switching back. I'm not really certain what drives people to do this, honestly. I mean, I can see why you'd want to have a second army (an army very different from your other which would give you a much different painting/modeling/playing experience), but why people flit between armies like a hummingbird, I don't know.

I am still on my first army and I plan to stay w/ it until I am finished. For a while I did not paint, I'd just build, and know I know that (beaver)DAM it is hard to paint marines when they're assembled. Painting before assembling is so much easier, and the end product looks so much better. I want a Tau army, but I am going to finish my marines first. Now, to the painting station!

I must say, I only came back to wargaming last year after a lengthy gap - but I really DO feel the pull of wanting to start a whole bunch of armies at once.

I guess I'm lucky that there is only really one army that has ever really grabbed me - that's Orks. I just never get bored of them, and no other army does it for me. I've come close to starting Chaos and IG armies, but never managed to work up the enthusiasm for it in the way I have for Orks. This keeps me focussed.

I'm just a Warboss at heart!

I bought a whole bunch of stuff at first, but got cracking with my painting straight away, so everything is at least basecoated, and a lot of stuff is finished.

I always want to start new stuff.
But cost and time are my limiting factors.

Years ago I was famous here on dakka for pumping out a tabletop standard army every couple of months, but back then a single guy who spent 10 days a fortnight in the country with nothing to do but watch videos and paint models (outside of work) I got a heap done.

Now I push to get 1-2 hours a day of painting/assembling and the family and house repayments are the big sink for my money.

I still buy more than I use as I have an idea for a tourney but later find a better combo. However the 12 spare saurus that have been sitting in my lizardmen bitz box for 2 years are now being painted to get ready for 8th ed.

I've got 3 armies sitting New In Boxes on my shelves...3

about 3-4 k of Lizardmen, 2-3 k of Orcs and Gobbos...and my sons 40k Orcs.

Not to mention the assorted crap still sitting over there like SM assult packs and a Land Raider and a Razorback.

Part of it is a store nearby closed down and was selling stuff at 60% off so I accelerated my buying...part of it was other deals I happened upon.

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

Depends on the army really.

My Guard and my Chaos just grew. One day I suddenly just had 30,000 points of each. Don't ask me how.

For armies made more recently - my Necrons, Death Guard, Death Watch, and so on - I've planned everything out in advance and got exactly what I needed to get and not a single model more.

So it comes down to whether I'm going for an army that can do everything in almost every combination (why else would I own 30 Russes and 400+ infantry?), or a more 'boutique' style army that is set in a certain way and doesn't change (ie. my Deathguard Army, which is 7 squads of 7 men).

I tend to paint my forces and then repaint them (for SMs). I have a terminator with this lineage: AOBR sgt. painted as UltraMarine; Converted him to a Termie Chaplain with skull head replacement, crozius, whole nine yards; Converted him back to a Termie Sergeant with power sword & stormbolter; Converted him to Njal Stormcaller or whatever the SW version of Thor is called. I'm not repainting him again

On a tangent, I saw an ebay ad for a unit that had placed or won a recent tourney. The entire thing was bare plastic or primed only. I thought most tourneys had painting and basing requirements???
