First time post,

I'm going to start an ork army, I was thinking the best thing to do would be to pick an army and then build towards it.

So I was thinking of starting with 1000 points,

The idea would be hide behind the nobz mob (with mek, painboy and warboss in it) using the Feel no Pain and KFF as a shield to get across the board.

The other mobs behind (obiviously) then meet the enemy and tear them up in Close Combat.

Use the Deffkoptas to flank any troublesome vechiles, walkers or heavy weapon squads.

Heres the list. Any comments much appricated

Take that KMB off the Big Mek, you don't want him killing himself.

Need More Boyz! That Nobz mob is just going to draw fire and die. You could have 40 more boyz for those points.

If you want to use a unit as a screen, use Grots.

Split the Koptas. Run two units of one each to prevent Ld issues.

Ok well then I would probably get rid of the Big mek entirely he's pretty much there for the KFF,
The idea being that with the KFF the pain boy and the eavy armour that nobz mob would be able to soak up a lot of shots.

Is this not the case ?

I guess I would drop the mek then, and get a trukk for the Nobz and spend the 70 points on a grot mob ?

Or would it better to spend it on boyz, the nobz included ?

They'll be able to soak up a lot of shots, sure. However, everything will be shooting at them.

Drop a few nobs, make them complex, keep the KFF for your boy mobz and throw some grots in front of them.

So what is the army you're building towards?

At the moment it looks like green tide, in which case KFF is well and good, but you do not want your screening unit to be a nob squad. In fact you really don't want a nob squad on foot ever really.
They're pretty tough, but way too expensive to be put on foot where they can be kited around and shot up. A battlecannon will ruin your day as the 5+ (or 4+) cover save only gets you so far and then your nobs are instant deathed. Each wound killing a full model if possible. (side note this is after allocation so if you have a nob with 1 wound taken in his own pool you can put the instant death wound on him instead)

Other screening units for a green tide are typically a 30 man gretchin squad, a 30 man boyz squad strung out in front of all your units, or an 'ard boyz unit with mad doc grotsnik giving them FnP in front.
The KFF is useful with all these to give the front squad a 5+ cover and then the rest get a 4+ cover.

If you use killa kans as your screen then you're moving into a kan wall. You'd want 6-9 kans with 1-2 KFFs depending on point allowance.

You must understand that for an ork a day that starts off killing something with your bare hands, and ends with those same hands being chopped off in battle, is a good one.

What's betta than one choppa? Two choppas!!! Two choppas is one more than...is one times da...IS LOTS MORE FUN!! WAAAAGH!!!

What am I building towards is kind of the question im looking answered.

I want to start with something simple, play with it and then after a few games add whatever it is I feel I need or want to play with.

Anyways talking your advice on board seems if I want to keep the mobs then I should get them in a trukk with something like this

fire them up the table quickly using the trucks,
and charge after them with the rest of the group,
Use the deffKopta to mop up vechiles walkers pesky units etc.

Both sound interesting, the first one is a bit fragile as it relies on the pretty weak trukks,

The second doesnt give me a whole lot to deal with tank other power klaws, but there are lots of those.

Are these sound tatically ? and which would you recommend for a starter army to build on.

I ran a Kan Wall for a while, using proxies, and I got bored with it.

I'm going with a Mech Assault now, much like your first list.

For the first list, I'd try to get everything in a Trukk if possible.

Also, I'd kit out my Trukks like so:
Trukk 50pts
w/ RPJ
w/ Ram
w/ Boarding Plank

Put shoota/skorchas on the Nobz and drop the Big Shootas from your Boyz.

P.S. Make sure you use Slugga Boyz in the first list and Shoota Boyz in the second.

I also think it would be better to drop the 10 man boyz squad from the 2nd list and use the points to fill out the first two mobs as much as you can. The more wounds you have to take before losing fearless the merrier.
The kans will already be screening so the gretchins can be put behind everything and just sit on a close objective or be held in reserve to do the same thing.

I'm going to be called a fool for this, but I really think my point has a slight bit of validity. I'm a HUGE fan of Old Zogwort and warpheads. Ork psychic powers are so cool. Grotsnik is pretty cool as well. Burna's in a Battle-wagon wins games and loota's are great. However, if you want good advice, I'd Private Message the user DashofPepper. He's a phenomenal ork player and would be glad to help you out mtl.

Grotz though? Why even bother with Grotz, the points difference between them and a potentially useful unit is negligible. You get so much more survivability and killing power if you just use Boyz.

Maybe your grandiose vocabulary is a pathetic compensation for an insufficiency in the nether regions of your anatomy.

Grots are great if you can get them in terrain. 20 models with a 3+ cover save are very hard to eradicate.

i use 3-4 looted wagons in apoc
and 2 in my normal armies
i have developed an ork armie that can destroy anything without a single combat
