I've recently had an idea for a Tau Farsight enclaves codex, which I will be starting in a few weeks when I'm not so busy. This thread will be for me to throw out my Ideas and get feedback on them.

My basic idea for the starting point of the fandex is a society that has become completely militarised and corrupt, and the Fire Caste has taken control of society, forcing the other castes to work as slaves and basic meat shields. It will basically be the feeling of superiority felt by the Vior'la fire caste taken to an extreme.

I need a historical reference to take inspiration from so I can base it on a real life society. Does anyone know and can summarise/have links to a country that has been taken over by a highly militarised state where the military felt completely superior to the average citizen and basically used them as slaves.

Does anyone know of a society that I can use as a starting point? Thanks.

Soviet Union? Nazis? Not really the Nazis...

Spanish and the Aztecs..
British and the black africans...

plenty of slave related stuff. It sucks to have to admit to that, but it's true :/

Current slavery?
Nike.
Child labour.

They're not slaves, exactly, but they have no choice if they want to survive etc.

Anyway...

I heard somewhere that the Chinese are like that somewhere or something... I dunno.

Also, I don't think farsight would enslave other Tau... I mean he just set up a self-sustaining empire... he just got tired of "greater good this" "greater good that". In a way, all Tau are slaves to the Ethereals and their beliefs. Mostly the Ethereals though

It may have united them, but it kinda takes away freedom. An entire race solely bent on the fulfilment of one belief. Not a particularly fun life.

I did think about the soviets, but I don't think their military were 'all powerful' as it were. I'm looking for a society who's military completely ruled the roost, and treated citizens like scum.

As for your last point about farsight, I'm trying to put a really nasty spin on his breakaway faction, where the military have been completely corrupted and have taken over the rest of society.

So basically you want to make the Farsight Enclave appear like a militarised society, with the people enslaved by a militarised
goverment? Frankly, I don't really like it. I've always thought of the Enclaves like a little ''free-er'' than the rest of Tau society.

Sort of, I want to make it seem like away from the rigid caste system of the ethereals, the fire caste has been corrupted into believing itself to be superior to the rest of the Tau. I want to create a Codex that emphasises the darker aspect of the Tau Psyche, where they have unknowingly reverted back to the pre-ethereal days, and the Fire Caste have taken over to 'ensure peace and stability' or something like that.

Its basically a 'Mont'au' scenario codex.

The best model to pattern from would be the Japanese pre-WWII. After that I think some good possibilities are:

The Spartans
Attilla and his boys
Feudal Japan

Not real life, but you could draw a parallel to The Last Airbender for inspiration as to Fire caste domination and the imbalance it causes.

BTW, I am working on a Tau Fan-dex and have created some intersting fluff about Farsight that seals with the imbalance of Fire Caste Rule.
Lrt me know if your interested in discussing it.

I think I will use Fuedal Japan as a starting point: it gives me a chance to use samuri and ninjas, as well as their bowmen/martial artists etc. I'll also tone down the grimdark suggested in my first few posts (only a bit though)

Also, this will be my first attempt at doing a Codex. I have had some experience with rules creation (see link in sig), but nothing on this scale. Any tips/advice from people who have created fandex's would be extremely helpful. Thanks

I am still working on my Fand-ex but if you waqnt I can give you links to 2-3 threads that went about 20-30 pages on the subject.

It is a lot of reading and ideas but you will see an evolutionary process where the threads went from wish-listing to focusing on problem areas and how to fix these problems while remaining true to the base philosophies.

Let me know if you want them and if you want the discussions on fan-dex creation in thread or by PM.
