Decided to go with a dread heavy BA army, in doing so i now have to make 11 dreads.
Moral of the story is this; i want it to look unique, rather than kit bashing a ven dread with left over parts, i was thinking of the forgeworld way.

Main problem: Never dealt with forgeworld since the site has changed.
Just registered my account now, but still not too sure (head alot of horror stories about FW recently)

Anyway, onto the ideas (not my cheapest idea, but it will look different)

Librarian Dread (1 in the army):

Thats pretty much the base of it, ill have to sculpt over / remove a few =I= but thats not a problem.
Thoughts?

Furioso Dread with talons (2 in the army):

Nothing OTT here, just stands out better than a basic dread kit, shame it wont be as cheap though lol.

Death company dread (5 in the army!):

He will of course have the talon army from the above dread posted to keep them matching.

Heavy Support Dread (3 in the army):

Wasnt too sure if i was going with the basic one from GW for price to start with, but figured that ive doomed myself anyway, so might aswell go the whole hog with it.

Not as flashy as the furioso, so they can be distinguished from eachother.

Arms wise, ill be going with these:

Arm set 1: (full mortis)

(will have left and right)

Arm set 2&3: (plasma blaster)

Now, this should seperate it enough to make it look unique, but now the not so fun part.
The cost of it all:

Librarian dread - £38
2 furioso dreads - £76 (£38 each)
5 Death company dreads - £200 ($40 each)
3 Heavy dreads - £108 (£36 each)

Ideas and C&C?

Have you thought of having a go at making your own dreads, or just buying 1 or 2 at a time, as thats a big hit to take in to go. Also using GW's dread kits with some converting, plasti carding/green stuffing can give some unique results. As for FW iv never had a problem with them.

Quite nice to hear a good comment on FW.
All i have heard so far is about problems with delivery, poor casts and warped parts.
Thanks

The main thing i wanted from the dreads is a unique base model.
The heads will be cut out and adapted somewhat from dread to dread (done this to a friends dread, so i know how i stand with it)

The basic GW dread is pretty basic and plain as it is, nothing really stands out with it (apart from the whole vending machine on legs look)

By going the FW route i wanted a pre-made base for the model, that i could sculpt away at in spare time.
With the GW one i would i have to start thinking about hacking bits apart and re-making whole sections. (want the body / head on the sarcophagus front)

Not only that, but in comes the problem with all the deads. Talons.
7 dreads will need a pair of talons each, so i need 14 DCCW arms to start with.
The only kit that provides this is the ironclad, which once again lacks the detail and ability to stand out enough, and also has the closed front, which would need changing.

In the long run, i'd end up spending more on plastic kits for parts i needed and bitz sites than to just go with FW models with convertions.

As to buying them: Ill possibly grab 2-3 a week, not going to go out and throw that amount of money into a whole project or ill end up falling behind with the models.

Its a great, if pricey, idea. You could scatter a few GW dreads in there, maybe one of each type. That way they will still add the the unique-ness of your dreads overall.

As for Forgeworld, I too have never had any problems. I have the FW Ultramarine Venerable Dread and it was a dream to assemble and paint. Warped parts are a problem with any Resin kits from any manufacturer and are very easy to fix by heating the part in hot water. Ive had to do this a couple of times in the past.

Ive had no problem with delivery either. I bought some Forgeworld parts while I was at Warhammer World at Christmas and they posted them to Canada for free. They turned up at the end of January.

Buying a bunch will save on postage I guess. As for fluff, arnt dreads suppose to be rather rare?

Ooie: A little bit from the BA dex

798.M41 The Assault on Baal

The chapters dreadnoughts, deemed unsuitable for the space hulk assaults, had remained in battle readiness on Baal itself.
With the remains of Waaagh! Big Skorcha on the loose, Venerable Furioso Astramael assembles all fourty-one of the chapters functional dreadnoughts and coordinates the defence of the fortress monastery in what later will come to be known as the Battle of Iron.

So its not that far fetched to have a large dread army, and it all fits into 2,000 points, so its able to be used lol.

Stubby, thanks for yet more reassurance on FW.
Guess it may be worth making a single order, if it turns up in decent time, ill order again.

Problem with the GW dreads is the plain look, by going all FW they then have a uniform look to them, while still being unique to one another.
I guess it is easier to cut and re-pose plastic, but i have no problems with doing this with resin either. (how hard can it be? lol, few pins, some GS and a bit of propping and atability, cant go wrong)

Thanks again for the C&C

On a side note, is it worth having that librarian dread on 1 foot with the other in the air (taking off look) with a set of large wings on it? (wings of sanguinius)
I was thinking of a single set, but maybe 2 sets (center pin connection on them) would look better on a bulky model.
