So has anyone else noticed the recent BOOM of Warhammer 40,000 media? We've got Space Marine: The Action RPG, an MMO is also confirmed to being made, and then the ULTRAMARINE movie. So whats up with people all of a sudden caring?

They are spending a bunch of money looking at new media. That is no guarantee though that people (outside of gaming forums and FLGSs) will actually care. If the products are good enough though, it will land a few more players to come here and post about cover saves.

Hell of a news and rumor here.

Regardless, I'm happy 40k has been getting a lot of exposure lately through all sorts of media. GW doesn't advertise in the traditional sense, so it's good they're finding good ways to get new blood in. Dawn of War was a hell of a gateway drug.

I didn't need any gateway to get in, I just dove in full tilt as soon as someone demoed at school.

I realize this, but an MMO? "Massive" is going to enlighten a whole lot of people. If people havent started caring, their about to. Just google Space Marine, or Warhammer 40k MMO.

My entry into the fantastic world of Warhammer was breaking a leg when I was 10 and my dad deciding to buy me Prince Tyrion, a set of paints and glue and himself Malekith as a father/son project.

I think I still have Tyrion somewhere around, but he looked like he was colored by crayons and assembled by a cracked out monkey.

Yes.

People care, and I think that Dawn of War is largely to thank for that.

I mean, I saw a brochure that my friends showed me when I was like, 12. Loved the look of everything, but was nowhere near a shop to get started (nor did I have the money)

Then I found Dawn of War, thought it looked familiar, brought it on a whim, LOVED the game, played it for HOURS. (and I mean HOURS) then one day I stumbled across a store, and -BLAM!- I have a Tau army.

Anyway, enough of my life story, Dawn of War was definitely an awesome game. And it brought a huge audience, now they're probably seeing if they can stretch that out a little (okay, a lot), and, hopefully find more 40k players.

Besides, I'm STOKED about the movie + MMO. Can't wait!

I don't know how many of these are due to people caring as much as GW finally getting off their rumps to take advantage of other outlets.

IMHO a good Scfi MMO would have filled the void and made some good ole cash, instead of competing with WOW for subscribers. This isn't a comment on the games themselves, as I don't know which is a "better" game. The only Scifi genre I know of was SWG, which I played for a loooooong time, waiting for someone to bring something better.

Regardless, I hope they achieve financial success with all of their projects and maybe, just maybe, we can go a few years without a price hike afterwards.

Hopefully, when this all does come out, maybe there is a chance(probably not) that more than half of the people wont be 10 years old and dream about smurfs. But that will probably happen.

Dawn of war definately helped, but so did World of warcraft, and Apocalypse made a meta-market that seems to fit GWs bizplan perfectly...

World of warcraft/LoTR (the movie) made elves/magic/fantasy/being-a-nerd "cool" again. When WoW hit 5million players, it showed that an MMO and a Fantasy Video Games don't only appeal to the basement-dwelling cheeto-munchers (no offense anyone). Dawn of War showed that with a decent gaming engine, a Games Workshop franchise can dominate even such a tightly knit market as RTS. Coupled togeather with all the new plastics, and the ease of building of the newer kits, gave birth to the rise of the 'wargamers' (I know 40k is barely a wargame, and I don't mean to insult the hardcore community with this comment)

You have the newcomers, all jumpin in on 5th edition streamline, with new and exciting kits of cool space marines, graceful (and grotesque) space elves, the brutish Orkz (which I think benefitted most from Dawn of war), guardsmen they can relate to (espescially if they are or have family members who are ex-military/military), Animesque Tau, Cold zombie necrons, and the zealous, righteous Inquisition! And if all else fails, there is always the Zerg Rush/Starship Troopers bugs that are... the Tyranids! (Hive Mind kekekekekekekekekekekekekekekekekekeke)

With such a saturated market of people just barely knowing the rules, you would think the longtime players would get slightly annoyed... thankfully, GW gave them something else to throw their money at. Apocalypse! With Apoc came more IA/FW purchases, and things like Planetstrike, the upcoming SpearHead, and the focus on making your board the most impressive out there (thus the influx of terrain) gave the "hard cores" something to take pride in and show a bit more shine (rightfully earned in experience or even plain devotion to the hobb) over all the newcomers, and also opened doors for these new comers to have a group of almost "mentors" to look up too. Sadly, this also gave rush to the "Beardy" players out there who love taking advantage of the new people by exploiting older armies/ rules / sheer inexperience to raise their prided "win count".

Thankfully the hobby is not overrun with beardies, more mentors are rising from the new crops, and 40k seems to be getting bigger and bigger by the year (their sales reports and the influx of FLGS activity, and Warhammer activities as a whole are evidence of this, especially in todays troubled economy). So to answer the OPs original 'question', yes, people care, and I think it has been key moves by GW, and Pop-Culture in general, that has helped this movement, and personally, I think this is a good thing.

Sorry for the

Thanks for reading!

So I just did some math.. the average MMO (WoW, and EVE were used as my baseline) cost about $180 a year. Using WoW as the example.. I have played 5 years off an on, so lets say 3 years of actual playtime, that is $540 I have spent on a game that is ending in a few years. Looking back at my Warhammer career I have spent maybe $1000 over 15 years or so, so about $5.55 a month. (This is all US btw)

So what does this have to do with this thread? Well I was 13 years of age when I started playing warhammer, and my expendable income was.. well not much. Since then my expendable income has increased, as I have aged. My gaming group is mostly a few years younger than me, with only one or two older members, so I am guessing that all of us once poor players now can spend a lot more money on all sorts of STUFF! Add that to all the extra media exposure that Warhammer has gotten, its just good marketing.

So um.. aside from all that incentive/econ stuff.. WARHAMMER MOVIE??? WHAT!!! DO TELL!!!! I like me some CGI action!

Well, I've noticed that there are quite a few RPG books out there including Rogue Trader which looked cool (but I couldn't figure out if it was compatible with Dark Heresy or not). I'd love to get in on the RPG action, but at $50 - $60 a book, it would take a couple hundred to get them all, and I'd never do that unless maybe my gaming group was into it and wanted to give it a try.

But too expensive to buy "just because."

TYRANID ARMY and more for sale. Many Price Drops. 40K and More.

I'm no economist, but I doubt that the size of a target market will have a measurable effect on the quality of a product after a certain level of consumption has been reached.
