so what doyou guys think will the 8th edition changes mean to the different armies?
Me? I play lizards and while the loss of striking first on the charge will hurt, I think some of the changes to combat may mean my saurus warriors get a boost by the edition.

Dryads rocking with high initiative, but suxxoring with being skirmishers... so I don't know!?
Treekin rocking with being large infantry... maybe!?
Not having enough banners in my army (say it ain't so!)?
Overall very excited and pumped for new rules, and more people pulling out their armies and starting to play . See you in the next edition, brotha! (Yes, still getting over the Lost finale, too )

Magic phase is seemingly getting nerfed, but Hero Hammer is going to be more possible now with 25% Hero & 25% Lord with no slots.

I think it means everyone is going to heve to do a hell of alot of painting as pretty much everything will change the way it works.
Flanking wil be almost impossible with the new mvt rules and opponents able to face any direction.
Full command groups are very necessary.
Magic has ben hit it the head too hard if double 6 rumours are true.
Hero spam is going to be insane for skinks, skaven and goblins.

Actually 8th doesn't change my VC at all. As long as that 50% character limit or so for Undead stays....
As for my O&G, I may actually dig them out of the rubbermaid container since they should be pretty good....
Although I'm sad they won't be able to do the Grimgor-DD BSB-2 scroll caddy list i love...

Not sure for my beastmen.
A lot of the changes could really help them (terrain and such, fight in two ranks, my bestigors get a boost against other 2 attack infantry in that they don't loose out in the second rank since they only have 1A anyway
But then artillery getting a boost will hurt me, shooting in general will.
It will be a HUGE change (Like 2nd ED 40k to 3rd) and I bet the people will come up with a 7.5 Edition to play.

How NG's win games now:
Step 1: Abuse 25% Special and Rare allotments for maximum war machines (180pts in DD's, 210pts in RL's, 105 / 210pts SC's (depending on if "Two-fer-one" remains)).
Step 2: Field a few NG blocks at large sizes (40+ models).
Step 3: Gorbad = General.
Step 4: Fill up remaining points with as many Night Goblin Big Bosses & War Bosses (preference to the later) for active combat resolution.
End result: Drop three 3" blast templates and 3 D6 S5 No-Save hits on enemy units a turn, alongside 3-6 Bolt Throwers. Army is Ld10 when within 18" of general, re-rolls every leadership check, and in combat - when having more ranks than the enemy (easy with up to 8 ranks) - Stubborn Ld10. Combine w/ an average of 2-4 Heroes per unit's front rank for active combat res > 0. If desperate for Dispel Dice, take 20-man Big 'Un unit and hide behind a hill - enjoy +3 DD meaning enemy will only ever have 3 more dice than you base (and 50% of the time will have less PD than you have DD base).
8th Edition is the age of "Lots of dying." CC armies are going to wade through units causing massive amounts of casualties, shooty armies are going to blast anything lighter armored than Bretonnians / Dwarves (or without 5+ base wards like Daemons & Forest Spirits) out of the water in a few turn's fire.

Only 45° LoS (I assume they mean 90°, unless Regiments have received tunnel vision), but with musician they may make a reform and either move or shoot without penalty. In addition, combats might be going one-round resolution (as in if you don't wipe a side out nor break it, roll again and keep rolling again until someone breaks or is wiped out). Adding in, lastly, that you need two full ranks to negate ranks, this essentially means:
1) You must set yourself up in a manner to be in charge range in multiple places so as to prevent the enemy from sufficiently rotating to put you in their front.
2) You must do so in a manner so as to have each unit at either front + another rank (assuming low-end interpretation) or +2 Rank Bonus (and sufficient models to keep such afterwards, with Rank Bonus now measured at the end of the Combat), before you can be sure they'll negate ranks.
3) You must do this in one turn.
4) You must keep in mind that your charge reach is now variable, so units you thought were within range can still be out because you rolled snake-eyes.
Needless to say, maneuvering into someone's flanks is going to be very unlikely if these rumors are true.

"Fight until one side breaks" has been debunked for ages. Combats will be fought turn for turn as they are now.
For my Empire, I expect to field slightly larger parent units, as I am running lots of infantry currently anyways. Units of 30 Spearmen or Halberdiers, with 15 men detachments. I might field a few more handgunners and crossbowmen, and perhaps another cheapish hero. Two Warrior Priests for some blocks to give hatred, a BSB, two wizards, something like that. Using an Engineer will be easier than before because you aren't crippling anything else, although he's still expensive.

In a general sense, I'm just looking forward to things getting all shaken up and encountering a new set of challenges. I like the idea that it will reset things for a bit- with everyone closer to the same level as they try to figure out how to go about the game with a new set of rules.
As for specifics, I'm waiting till the book drops.

After hearing about the % update this morning and reading even more of the artillery spamming dreams of Empire players or Dark Elf xbow orgasms, I'm today wondering if I'll still be playing. With no slots and nearly no caps, all the structure is falling out of the game and I'm wondering if anybody will have 'normal' armies for me to put my 'normal' / 'softish' stuff against. If I start now, I have time to paint one army for Crossroads in Sept. I wanted to finish my ogres up as a Skrag list, but that's looking unplayable without banners and ranks everywhere, and it'll be shot to gak and will have to face stubborn infantry blocks head-on when it arrives. I can much easier redo my skaven for the 4th time (2nd with new book), which will play a stronger 8th game apparently, but I hate clanrats with a vengeance so have a hard time seeing the point. So, perhaps I'll finish my beloved CSM back to 2k, and finally dip my toes into Infinity. My opinion will change tomorrow no doubt, but for now: feth you very much, GeeDub. The scenarios that are just like the ones used in tournaments, and offer nothing original?
I wouldn't be surprised if they took SoC, 6th Edition Back of Book, and other scenarios, re-wrote the title, and tried to pass it off as "Brand new scenarios to spice up your games!"

The massive problems the Chaos army book has will only get worse with weakened magic. The army is worthless without strong casters. Also, the true LoS and shooting from two ranks punches chaos in the face since the army has no shooting at all and is ridiculously vulnerable to shooting at the same time.
The real problem is how absolutely awful the current chaos army book is, but Chaos will get even weaker and more one dimensional (like it already wasn't one dimensional enough) with the new rules.
The only saving grace is that 8th will give large blocks of marauders and chaos warriors a huge boost and make them a lot more survivable in actual combat. Not sure this will help make the army better, but it will help people keep their units on the table longer.

I'm skeptical about the unlimited slots, Salvage... and there are rumors of 3 max of the same special / 2 max of the same rare.
And I would think a playtester somewhere would have realized that having no slots on heroes is not a good idea, with such cheap ones available!!! So I'm hopeful

GW is notorious for flat out ignoring their play testers. I have seen this multiple times with my own eyes. I have read the play test reports and then was stunned that the glaring flaws the play testers pointed out remained in the final version of the game. This accounts for a lot of the game breaking unbalanced stuff you see in their rules. A lot of this is also done because there is a schizoid split between making a good game and making money. They're also notoriously inconsistent about this, releasing great new models with really crappy rules and then watching them not sell.
Moral of the story? You as a sane player will read a new rulebook and:
1) Marvel at how awful rules are written, omitting important details and causing significant table confusion
2) Marvel at how game breakingly unbalanced a rule or unit is when reading a new GW book.
3) Marvel at why anyone still plays their games because of the first two marvels.
Honestly, I think the first two exist because of some strange reason, people keep buying their rules and their minis with all the flaws they possess. They also continued to stay in business despite hemorrhaging money and closing stores. Then after closing hosts of store, they go and re-open more. Maybe they've made a deal with an evil god... who knows...
