BEFORE I START I DON'T WANT ANY MENTION OR ARGUMENT ABOUT WHETHER ABADDON IS FAIL OR NOT.

Ok. Finished Soul Hunter, the Grey Knights omnibus and most importantly, Dark Creed (3rd Word Bearer book)
In soul Hunter abaddon and a coalition of other legions fail to conquer a system, due to reinforcements arriving too early for the imperials (damned Blood Angels). Also, Talos mentioned that 'centuries of failed campaigns have draped him in ignomy amongst the night lords, to which Abaddon replies he actually met his campaign objectives.
In the Grey Knights omnibus, Abaddon sent one of his lieutenants (Urkrathos) to a daemonic forge world (Chaeronis) to retrieve the Castigator STC, a huge titan which dwarfed even Emperor/Imperator titans. According the the book (Dark Mechanicus) it would win him the war, but it is destroyed by a small squad of Grey Knights before they collect it.

FINALLY
In Dark Creed, the epilogue Erebus is talking to Marduk. He tells him that some think that Abaddon is unfit for the title of Warmaster, and suggest that he has the whole (or at least the majority) of the Sicarus Council behind him. So, this could be

-Back drop for chaos codex (Slated for December 2012)
-Next global campaign

I think it's pretty impressive Abaddon still has any power...or is alive at all; i think it would make for an interesting campaign, it would allow for schisms between chaos forces and imperial and eldar forces to strike back while they're divided

If they are setting up for a new Chaos Codex in 2012, they're just going to cop out with having the Black Legion and allies beating everyone else.

i would really like the idea of a new ruler of chaos and really want another global campaign to start soon! or maybe it would be just abaddon having to deal with a "rebellion" of sorts, and in the end comes out more powerful?

GW isn't in to global campaigns anymore.

I doubt the Great Despolier will be usurped in GW's materials anytime this (IRL) decade.

In "Soul Hunter", as you said, Abaddon accomplished his goals.

The Black Legion's goals were not the same as the Night Lords, that much was obvious. They were not there to "conquer". That's the easiest way for Abaddon to really get a lot of the various factions interested.

If i recall correctly Abaddon, in the GK novel, also states the first 12 black crusades were to probe the imperiums defenses

Interesting theory, but BL stories can't all be tied together(seperate authors) and Abaddon is actually a good unit.

I can understand the first one or two crusades being a bluff to screw around with the enemy. But 12 of them? No. Not going to believe that.

Abaddon dying would be a pretty cool change of pace. So long as the guy to replace him didn't feth up as badly.

Not every Black Crusade is led by Abaddon, just as an FYI.

The problem with Abaddon is... if he wins the overall war, most other factions are going to wind up dead. So obviously he's never going to be allowed to win. If he loses, everyone says he's a complete failure.

The problem is that the same will be true of any other Chaos champion who ends up 'leading' the CSM forces. They can't win, which means they'll get labelled a failure by the fanbase, which will permeate it's way into the fluff the same as it has for Abaddon in those books.

I don't think they need a new campaign replacing Abaddon, he already won the 13th Black Crusade and crushed Cadia. Expand on that, have a campaign where Chaos has now completely overridden the Cadian system and is moving to threaten the Imperium as a whole. It would be a logical and consistent follow-on from the results of the Eye of Terror campaign, that rightfully reasserts Abaddon as still being a threat.

It also reinforces the Grimdark - the fluff says the Imperium is teetering on the brink of extinction from constant predatations from Chaos and others, but in reality even when Chaos DOES win a major battle and pushes the boundaries of the Imperium back, their plot-armor retcons it away!

See, that's where things get weird.

Cadia wasn't "crushed". There are still Imperial forces on the surface of Cadia. The Imperium still maintains control of the spacelanes around the Cadian Gate, no less.

The thing is that Abaddon was able to push the Imperium back long enough to solidify a hold and get forces past the Gate to wreak havoc elsewhere.

Think of it like the Battle of the Bulge. He broke their lines, was able to drive clean through and cause tons of damage and overrun key defensive positions.

But he failed to really solidify his gains, which left it wide open for a counterstrike from the Imperium to push them back.

Remember:
The Cadian "Gate" isn't a physical feature. The space around Cadia is what it refers to.

So all it really means is he got past Cadia.

You gotta be near the gate though, due to the pylons on it being what stabilises the gate.

The "Gate" is a huge sector of space.

And nobody knows what really makes the "Gate" more stable. It's been hypothesized that it's the Pylons, but it's never really been confirmed.
