Do any of you 40K masters know of fluff where Imperial forces have captured Tyranids and performed experiments?

I've been debating making combat servitors out of Tyranid models. A little surgery to remove any psychic link and self thinking ability and some painful implants and TAA DAAAA!!! Really ugly servitor! Sure this would take lots of experimenting and be cost many human lives to capture said Tyranids, but so what, they'll make more. Tyranid capturing would make fun 40K or kill team scenarios anyway. Inquisitors capture demons, why not bugs?

Either way, if I can find any bug models that aren't painted, I'm making up a few.

Fluff in the codex talks about how Kryptman captured a brood of stealers to divert Hive Fleet Leviathan. Also on Tarsis Ultra they captured a lictor and engineered a biological plague that destroyed the synapse relays thus inducing IB in all the nids on the planet. They haven't been able to reproduce the plague though.

I made up some of my own fluff for my DE army, they captured a Nid, and did HIDEOUS HIDEOUS experiments to one of their own, to link the rider with the Carnifex. We call him Tiny now. When I field him he counts as my HQ. I am currently redoing the model so I can add picks later.

However having read a lot of the Inquisition fluff, the Empire would "never" do that it would be "unspeakable". So somewhere some inquisitor or office of his Holiness has probably done it.

Yeah I should have mentioned, DE rider is target able has his own wounds and if he dies Tiny goes nuts. Basically did this because of the stated above

Retribution and Sc0ttfree,

Thanks, I looked up your Kryptman references and found this on warhammer 40K wiki on him:

"Well-versed in the Tyranids and their infestation techniques, Inquisitor Kryptmann was responsible for first identifying the Genestealer infestation preceding Hive Fleet Leviathan. He later authorized the largest single act of genocide the Imperium has ever inflicted on itself by abandoning or destroying all worlds in Hive Fleet Leviathan's path. For his actions he was issued a "Carta Extremis" and was stripped of his title. However, this did not stop him and he soon led his loyal Deathwatch warriors to capture live Genestealers, place them in stasis, and use them to lure the Hive Fleet into the worlds controlled by the Orks of Octavius, slowing down the Hive Fleet while it sought to digest the massive Ork empire."

Where did you guys read about this? I'd like to read more.

I am sure some Ordo Xenos inquisitors have done this. In the Hero of the Imperium series by Sandy Mitchell, Inquisitor Vail makes several comments about tyranid biology and structure at different points. (In Cain's Last Stand, they even discuss that the Imperium has been tracking different tyranid spawning points based on the color variations of the bugs.) I don't think it would be illogical to assume that some inquisitor has captured some of the smaller, weaker tyranids. I can think of a few dozen scenarios where such a possibility could occur. If you fielded some tyranid-modeled servitors, I would think it was unique and original.

The one pitfall I would avoid is under-converting them. I would make sure that they are very obviously no longer regular old tyranids, and have been extensively altered by the servitor augmetics (just to keep away accusations that you're just using a tyranid model because you can't find servitor models).

Really cool idea, I think.

Well, background wise:

No matter what, the Hive Mind will find a way to take control back. We're not talking about a "gland" that allows for the Hive Mind to take control. You'd have to completely lobotomize the Tyranid, removing all of its abilities to actually function, making it useless for even something as simple as being a Servitor.

Yes, Ordo Xenos does this all the time.

The only way I can see "Tyranid" servitors are if you do something like...

Alter a human brain to interface with the synaptic nerve system of the dead Tyranid and have the carapace being the "servitor" body.

It could be done and somewhere it probably has.

As others have said the Hive Mind is very hard to control. It's posible but normally it would be to expensive to do it. However since this is going to be a servitor rather than a functioning tyranid it is going to have it's mind completely destroyed anyway during the process. It will be so heavily lobotomised that it's just a shell. All brain functions will be gone, so there is nothing for the hive mind to control.

Yeah. It also mentions it in a timeline or map of the universe-The Imperial Guard Codex I think. It declares that whoever wins will be the stronger.

Also covered in IA4 is the 'nids ability to reproduce and diversify away from the fleet and the norn queen.

From just a few samples they were able to grow into good size force containing everything up to a Heirophant titan.

Would they have eventually produced hive ships and a new norn queen?

Yeah, but you don't really need it to be "alive" to check DNA.

There's a reason DNA testing is used when a severely decomposed body can't be identified by normal means.

Yeah, it's a pretty interesting story - Kryptman's Gambit. As orks meet defeat, they continue to grow stronger. As nids meet stronger species, they continually adapt to defeat their stronger opponent. You can probably imagine the devastation that these two circular-adapting species could wreak in the face of the two meeting in opposition.

Kryptmann's Gambit had nothing to do with the Anphelion Project, Puma.

However, "Redemption Corps" does deal with some of the fallout from Kryptmann's Gambit. In a neat way too.

They have but making a xeno-servitor would be tech-heresy of the highest order. No 'normal" Mechanicum folk would do it. Your army would have to be renegade a la one with deamonhosts.

Hmmm, I smell a new Genestealer cult!

Concerning Kroot:
Short answer: They won't eat tyranids.
Longer answer: This was explicitely covered in the novel "For the Emperor". A shaper smelled at the genestealer and declared their flesh taboo. Has to do with both races extracting genes from their prey, so these mechanisms are not compatible. See fanmade Kodex Kroot for more information.

It stands to reason that they would I think - a few Termagants and other minor species managed to secretly diversify into a full-blown Synapse web and planetary invasion force. The 5th Ed book details Tyranids on Ghorala intelligently selecting bioforms to produce despite having no Norn Queen around, and they eventually grew into a fully fledged tendril of Leviathan. It's an area of fluff that's not been touched since late 2nd Ed/3rd Ed (as an appendix list in the BBB), and something I hope we see more of in the future.
