So all we would do is select a topic and then have two people go about debating! We would probably need to set up some rules and a way to judge who wins (a poll maybe?)

It's an idea, but it would need to be moderated. Not "internet forum moderated", but actually moderated so that both participants have the questions and their replies filtered through a third party who keeps them on topic and focused on critical analysis rather than cheap rhetorical tricks.

Or do it as a recorded chat session with just a moderator(or 2), timer, and the debaters(set it so people can listen in, but not comment in the main channel). Tone is more important in a serious debate than the average internet discussion.

I think if the rules are followed this could make for a pretty decent thread to read. But there has to be a flavor of hilarity thrown in there just for good sport.
