Here is my dilemma I am reading through the codex, and come across the honor guard. On paper they look like artificer armor wearing power weapon toting beasts, but in practice do they actually do that well?

Does anyone have any advice on using this unit, or any potential tactics for them.

Or is it simply not worth it to take them.

It's their lack of invulnerable save and expensive cost that makes them not as efficient as other choices.

The best way to play a Honor Guard is to leave them at home on the shelf :p

Actually they can bee fairly reasonable as long as you don't go overboard on upgrades. A 5 man unit with Banner and Champ with RB is 225 points.

The main benefits are their bolters, grenades, ability to ride in a Rhino/Razorback, and the Banner. The Banner provides an extra attack to the unit and any ICs and allows rerolls to pinning and leadership checks.

The thing is you really have to pick your targets well and avoid PW/PFs at all costs. Personally, I like running them with PA Calgar in higher point games. He bases any hidden PF/PWs and lets the HG bully the rest of the unit. They work really well against MEQs and units that might be able to overwhelm TH/SS Terminators. However, you're generally better off with Assault Termies 90% of the time.

As I suspected, I will probably still run them on occasion because I have a bunch of very pretty converted models that I like showing off.

Discussed already fairly well in the thread above.
