I read an old thread on here about how the Leman Russ needs an overhaul.

Either way my own idea on a LR rebuild





I tried to find a good balance between the Leman Russ and Baneblade, I tried to incorporate a workable suspension and a more realistic turret and main gun, while adding Macharius-like sponsons.

The Engine compartment is also kinda wild I know, but I wanted to give it something new, and something you could see in the picture.

Tell me what you think.

I think it looks to much like a baneblade, it needs to be smaller. The drawing is well done thought.

I could see a russ being a mini-baneblade. The baneblade looks so awesome in part because its huge (lots of space for detail, etc.), so it would be hard to really get that across with a little vehicle like a russ, but it's not impossible.

Well here is what I just did in Photoshop, I tried to take a Baneblade of the interwebs and make it look closer to this.

I think the weapons need to be enlarged alot to show the size difference, as well as the cupola thingy on the turret.

Looks real cool, kinda like a German WWII tank, though the engine looks kinda big...

I have a baneblade which I'll probably never assemble as a baneblade, I have been quite tempted to try to turn it into 2 'Mega-Russes' (or orky equivalents). i like the idea of a Russ that looks more like a mini-baneblade - unfortunately I'd pretty much only be keeping the tracks, so maybe it's not such a practical idea...

I prefer the drawing better, it reminds me of a modern tank and would be a refreshing change of pace when compared to the normal WW1/WW2 style Russ.

I don't know. I think that's what gives it appeal. I think most of us liked the new Rhino when it came out. Everybody said that it looked like a mini land raider for the most part. I like the current Leman Russ tank as it has grown on me, but I feel GW would do well to make it more like a mini Baneblade.

I know I'm getting old and am in danger of sounding like a grumpy old man, but I rather like the original Leman Russ.

It has a certain low tech charm.

Same for the old hellhound, etc., etc.

The asthetic charm of the IG is the mix of WWI/WWII tank asthetics. I don't want IG riding around in Abhrams or "space tanks" to be honest...

Well, and for me Leman Russ is the only machine in IG codex i hate. I looks like a parody of tank. This is the only model i know i will never buy. I'm using converted kv1 model for the time being.

I really like the ww1 styings of the leman russ, but I agree with Lord_Astaroth that a new Russ as a mini-baneblade would probably be successfull in the same way as the current edition Rhino was redesigned in the style of the "new" Land Raider.

If you check out stugruss' posts at warseer (sorry I cant give you a link, it's blocked at work) he used chimera side walls and generated something much like what you are tring to do and he even did a step by step, well worth reading.

I do enjoy some of the looks of the current russ, but the design isn't feasible as an actual tank.

The treads are too skinny

The side armor rides too low so the LR wouldn't be able to go over a simple speed bump without breaking down.

The Turret is unbelievably small, the newer version is helping but not enough

The tank is extremely tall.


The LR was built to look like a Light Tank, similar to a Renault FT-17 or a Vickers Mark VI. It has many of the same proportions, but for the size of the Leman Russ they just don't stand up, especially as a MBT.

I think the main flaw in GW's WW1 style Imperium tanks, is the weapons the Imperium faces. A lascannon is alot more powerful than an M1A1 Abrams' main gun, which can pierce modern armor easily. Yet it has trouble against armor from WW1?

I know the Imperium has a technological disadvantage, but they also have to survive, and survival means adapting. And nobody could survive a lascannon in a Mark 1 from WW1. I think the Imperium needs to start to making their own tech or something, because you can't fight different wars with the same stuff, over and over.

anyway rant aside, thats why I wanted to change the design, the current one has no basis as an effective tank at all, let alone an MBT

I think that the reasn that the Russ hasn't changed shape that much is because GW view it as one of their trademark designs. If you go back to the very first models in Epic scale they look pretty similar to the current offering.

Also don't go down the road about trying to compare 40k weapons and armour to modern equivalents. It leads to pain and annoyance

Lascannon have difficulty killing Russes because it fits the rules for this to occur. The fluff reason would be down to the materials that make up the Russ hull and armour being some kind of magical alloy (cf. ceramite, adamantium, etc)

The whole point behind the 40k universe is that Humanity has reached dizzying technological heights and is now in the downward trend where they can replicate a lot of advanced tech but can no longer design new tech due to stagnation and external threats.

I'm also not that keen on the Russ design hence I went the route of using the Chimera chassis and rather like the effect.

its much more similar to the current LR I think but with a few different alterations that still give it a modern-ish feel. Also throw some more rivets and other stuff from the current Russ on there and I think it'd work out well. Maybe work on the turret a lil? Also remember this is just a drawing made of boredom not really an art piece so i know there are art inconsistencies and such.

Not bad. It looks a little like the Leclerc The French always have liked having oversized turrets on their MBTs
