I can't help feeling that a rumour thread (eg the current Warhammer rule book thread that's running to 26 pages now) should remain a rumour thread.

Someone had thoughtfully posted the pictures & text from the latest GW new letter with actual pictures. This has now been locked by the MODS as it had been covered in said Warhammer rulebook rumour thread. It happens a lot with Codex's too.

I suggest that when solid facts come out (from actul text & pictures from the company - not 'a redshirt told me Dark Eldar are next for sure!'), a new thread is valid.

I work & am old and don't speand time reading long threads for that 1 bit of actual news.

So, the question is, what's your take on this & should the news & rumours forum rules be changed??

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Don't we normally just change the topic title to something like "rumour thread - new pics page 6"?

Neither News nor Rumour, I suggest a thread lo....

joking.

I find it odd the amount of rumours brought about by "a red shirt told me" without anything to back it up. Most poeple who work for large companies will agree with me that in most cases, the poeple who actually need to know are usually the last to know. In this case its the lacky's in the red shirts.

Only way I can think to get round this is if you post a news or rumour then you post pictures of screen shots or copied and pasted text from emails and if not provided thread gets locked. but thats something that won't sit well with most dakka users and certainly not fair on the MOD's who will have to take extra effort in modorating the threads.

Its a fair point - a couple of months back I posted something that I thought was 'news' in a new thread and then got jumped on by *deleted to avoid flamewar* about how I'd obviously being a lazy arse by not finding out that that info had been put on the 8th or 9th page of a rumour thread earlier in the day.

FWIW I think there should be a clear distinction between rumour threads and news threads. Possibly even a News sticky that exists only for facts (no discussions) or even a news banner (similar to professional news organisations) along the top if such a thing is technically feasible??

I barely even look at rumor threads. The " a redshirt told me" and "my buddie that works at GW..." or variations are, by definition, garbage.

1. GW wants to fix the info leaks.
2. Standard practice is just firing people that blab.
3. Therefore good information is not going to come from anyone in GW that wants to keep his job.
4. If Redshirt tells you something, it's either common knowledge they are allowed to expose, or its garbage. Or..
5. Person telling you is stupid enough to not care about being canned, and leaked info from stupid people isn't worth repeating.

While I agree that it'd be nice to have a rumour discussion and an actual news discussion, someone would need to decide on what the actual facts were in order to move them to a News thread. This would be a lot of work for a Mod to do.

You're also always going to get people discussing the actual News in the rumour thread as rumour becomes fact.

The only way to really neaten it all up would be great to have set threads for each race/rule set or expansion. One for Actual News (read only) and one for Rumour discussions. You have a rumour, stick it into the rumour thread. You have actual news? Mail it to a Mod to post in the Race or Expansion News thread.

Sounds like a plan to me, got back into the hobby this year after 15 years and after reading for a few weeks how DE are next, October, early next year, last week and @ 14:52 29th Feb 2020, I worked out that the rumour threads are mostly just a collection of guess work and wishes.

Put them in a letter and post to Santa, not much point in posting them on a board.

So screw rumour threads if I want to know GW news I will just look at their site or check out the news letter although a thread for real facts wouldn't go amiss.

I think they should torch all DE rumour threads until an actual picture of a model or something appears. A fresh one starts every week or two and it's the same thread each time.

To avoid the need to sift through every page for a needle in the static, the OP could update the first post with new information or delete info that's debunked. Extra work on the OP's part, but a genuine help to the community.

Miss Brimstone, he was awesome on warseer about collating pics and new stuff in a mod only rumour thread, you could always cut the bs and check that thread for straight up news, not fuss no muss. Wasn't always up to the minute, but was at least day accurate, but it was also sometimes 1st!

Alternatively, just ban rumours. If anything is posted without some kind of viable proof then it gets locked.

Viable would be something like a link to a website where the information is kept, screenshots, etc. None of that "I over heard a redshirt talking to someone with a name badge about something I didn't quite hear but mentioned Dark Eldar, so that means a new codex is coming out next month" crap

I dunno, it's vaguely hypnotic watching the rumour vapour evolving into solid news over a period of time (though ten years for Dark Eldar is pushing it a bit).

A student at University 8 years ago as part of her diploma did a study that involved distributing rumours via the internet to see how many of them would become viewed as fact. These were silly things like "you eat a spider in your sleep once a week" or "razors go blunt if left in moonlight"

Just goes to show, say something without any proof on the internet enough times and people will believe its fact

Ofc you know this is common even w/o the internet. Politicians/News have always done things like this.

I don't think that'd quite work, for example when a codex/army book is about to come out people often do pick up useful or "real" rumours/news from conversations/experiences with "redshirts"/similar.

That said...

1. Do users think it would be useful for a stickied thread where new pics of models were hosted on Dakka itself, even if it was out of the regular thread discussing said models on that board. For example, a fair few people couldn't view the demon model pictures when they were released by mistak...err....when GW graciously allowed us a sneak peek, when the pics were linked to the main GW site, which is blocked by/for a lot of people.
The idea being that people could still then comment upon said pics in the main thread on that board. Until said thread ceased to be news and rumour obviously.

2. Would we have volunteers willing to keep updating the first post in a rumour thread ?
