I bought a Gundam model to use as an Eldar Revenant Titan. I just couldn't justify the cost of the Forge World model, and don't want to make one out of toothbrush handles.
It cost around $70, and is 12" tall (31 cm). The FW model is 30 cm to the head, so I imagine this one is a little shorter than that, but pretty close.
I intend to use the two rods coming out of his back as Pulsar Lasers. The model snaps together. No glue or painting required. I am not sure if I will paint it or not.
I do want it to look more Eldar. I will have to model the pulsars onto the arms somehow.
Anyway, if I get this thing going, how would you feel if you came to an Apocalypse game, and the guy running it allowed me to play this model as a Rev Titan.
Pretend that the event advertised that titans were allowed, but no mention of "official" models was made.
Would you feel bad, if this thing wiped you off the table?

I think I would be honored to have that thing kill my army... Who thought Gundam would find a soft spot in my heart? Well, that's not entirely true; I do like a lot of their model kits...

It looks like a cool model to be fair. As long as its a friendly event, and people knew Titans were going to be there it should be ok, especially as they had the option to bring their own. I wouldn't feel bad so to speak, sad if it killed all of me yes. But its all a part of the game
Or, if you let the organiser know in advance, then they could always find something for the enemy to use as another titan (or equivelant) then no hard feelings.

I don't play Apocalypse, if I did I would be fine with that as an Eldar Titan. It looks more Eldar than the square kind of Gundams -- more 'flowery' if you get the meaning.
Like you say a bit of modding of the weapons will help the blend in better.
If you have any doubts about using it at an 'official' event it's best to consult the organiser before you start with it.

I'd play against it without saying a word.
Unless it was heavily modded and stopped looking like a gundam (more than just a bit of conversion work, I think), I would be pretty annoyed and you would lose all credence of the hobby side of the game with me.
Not trying to harsh on the idea, just being honest.

So you are saying if I modify it extensively to make it more 40k like, you would be less happy?
I don't mean to imply that I would be sneaky and try to get away with playing an unauthorized model.
Honestly, I expect to put this thing together. Drill a hole in each of the white rods so they attach to the forearms of the model. Then drill another hole at the end so it looks like the bore of a weapon. Slap a few Eldar decals on it and a base of some type and put it on the table.

I wouldn't have any objections, as long as you've actually had it/tried to convert it.
Were you to show up with it still in its plastic packaging, that would be where I have a problem.

We have all been programmed with images of what units should look like. This is hard enough to overcome, so bringing in a completely non-relatable 'figure' from another sources popular and easily recognisable IP... no way.
Imagine if I took a Ford Focus to an exotic car show and told the judges it's a Ferrari. Doesn't work because we all know what a Ferrari looks like as well as what a Ford Focus looks like.

I think it would make a fine base to convert and add some 40K/Eldar touches. You should put some effort into making it less Gundam and more Warhammer IMHO but would not balk at it for a one-shot game while you are in progress.

You'll never see an "official" apocalypse event, so it's a moot point. I'd love playing against it though. I've used a MacFarlane dragon as Angrath before. If it's an FLGS and you bought the Gundam from them I doubt they'd have an issue, and GW stores don't like non-GW models being used anyway. Like I said, it will never come up except against someone playing "GW Police" during a casual game (which is utterly pointless).

I'm saying the opposite.
Take a Mr Potato head, move the arms around, and put some decals on it, and it's going to look like you took a Mr Potato head, moved the arms around, and put some decals on it.
I would 100% play it against it, and not say a word negatively to you about it. But if I can tell it's a gundam at a single glance, and it would not look that out of place in a row with 100 other gundams, I would think less (a lot less, in fact, in this case) of you in terms of the hobby side of the game.
I'm probably not the typical 40k player, but then, what is typical for this hobby? I would not play on a table (or at least be happy about it) that had random objects as terrain, either. I play 40k, 100%, because of the fluff and visuals. This is a little hilarious, because if you put me in a category, it would be very like to be WAAC - I'm just a competitive guy. All that said, if you gave me the rules for 40k and some counters to use as all the units with little numbers to distinguish them, I wouldn't touch it with a 40 foot pole.
For me, putting a non-heavily (and I mean heavily) modified gundam on the table is akin to putting a counter down. I'll play versus either, and I'll secretly think you're lame for both. This is even exasperated by the fact that gundams aren't exactly some unknown IP.
Again, not trying to be mean, just honest. I think you could modify this model to work well as an eldar titan (greenstuff most cracks, remove the chest/ cod piece areas and make them curved and smoother, etc), but it would be a pretty large undertaking.

Points well taken. Perhaps I can selectively build the thing, leaving pieces out, and add peices that convert it to Eldar.

I would kind of have a problem with it.
I mean you just went out and bought it. You didn't really paint it, you didn't do any conversion, hell you probably didn't even build it (correct me if I am wrong on this part). I mean you don't even have a base for it or anything.
I think other people fielding titans would feel cheated.

I wouldn't have problem, I use a WIP Mr. Potato Head for a stompa. I think it's cool. I got a friend who has the actual model. He wants another one but make it out of a 12" WarMachine figure from Iron Man 2. As long as we can tell what it has and use the right rules. NP.

my only problem with any "proxies" would be if it was too big or too small. I love seeing clever ideas for overcosted fw stuff, whether it be different models or scratchbuilt stuff as long as you aren't modeling for advantage its all good

As long as its modded enough to look like a Revenant and not a Gundam, I think its a cool idea.
But if it is obviously a Gundam, I wouldn't have fun playing it. I'd feel like I was playing in some strange Gundam/40k mashup universe instead of a truly epic 40k battle. Since I play for the fluff, this would throw me off.
But like I said, mod it and paint it up and it'd be an awesome titan.

I would also agree that i wouldnt say anything if you put it down, but i think it would lose the flow of the game if it wasnt at least painted like eldar, and i would rather see it converted to some extent. i wouldnt say heavily converted thou that is bonus points, but i would like to see some work on it so it doesnt look like something you just bought at a store and threw onto the table.
it isnt awful thou, i think if you at least paint it and put on some symbols and maybe some simple conversions (eldar models/pilot, base with eldars on it, eldar weapon platforms, etc.) it would be acceptable.

I feel bad saying this but...
I would be pretty pissed if someone brought that to a game of mine :/
Spend the time making and building your models, and I will respect you. make meltaguns out of bluetac to stick on your completely unpainted marines, I wont be too happy. Put a gundam on the table and I will pack up. I never had an appreciation for japanese anime, and it does take away from the whole grimdark feel.
I guess in a friendly apocalypse game its actually quite alright, especially if you convert it a bit. Buut obviously you would never think of fielding it in a normal game
