I find myself really wanting to play Necrons. Please give me some horror stories that will make me realise what a horrendously bad idea this is, before I drop several hundred dollars on an army that I won't want to play any more.

Necron miniatures are known to cause impotence among male gamers age 16-53.

The Monolith is a to put together.

One day, when I was enjoying a sunny day in a pasture, a squad of Space Marine players gunned me down with automatics. True story. I got better.

Necron miniatures not only cause impotence, they also make you gain weight.

Army building for them:

Not so much fun, very limited options.

Playing with them:

Very fun, with WBB, and all the teleporting, it can be really fun!

Competitive level:

Most people just say "lolnecronshowamigoingtolose???!!!!11!!!!!1!one!!" though they can hold there own, don't expect to win too many tournaments though!!!

My wife loves WBB. At the start of your turn you get half your dead army back. She just thinks that's the coolest part ever.

That and she loves my light up monolith that I did for her.

Anyway, I think Inquisitor_Syphonious hit it pretty good. Boring as hell to create the army list, there are just so few options. But once they are on the battlefield if the feel of the army fits your personality, they apparently are just a ton of fun to play.

Here's why you shouldn't buy Necrons:

I have played against Necrons easily a dozen times, with multiple armies. Of all these times I have lost only once. That single time was because it was a 500 point game and all I had were the footsloggers from Black Reach, and I just got kited. Necrons are incredibly boring to fight, as they're like Marines but with less killing power (due to lack of special/heavy weapons and powerfists) and more survivability. Every game against Necrons goes like this:

1. My guys move forward (be they Terminators, Ork Boyz, tactical Marines, or what have you)
2. We shoot each other. A few of my guys die, a few less Necrons die.
3. Close combat happens.
4. Necrons phase out.

They're just boring to fight against, and I can't see them being much more fun to play against. When their new codex comes out (whenever this will be) we'll see if anything changes, but as of now they're just dull. I'm by no means a WAAC player, or even a terribly competitive one. Even with this in mind, I notice that Necrons hardly ever win, and while I don't mind losing as long as I have fun, losing game after game after game can get frustrating.

From a model standpoint, the Necron Warrior kit is cool. However, there's no customization outside of posing. There's a lot of metal in the army, and a lot of the unit choices pale in comparison to those from other armies. To sum up this spergy rant, don't play Necrons until they get a new codex. Right now they're oh so boring. More boring than Dark Angels sans Deathwing.

Also of note, as Grey Templar said, they are easy to paint, which might encourage you to do so!

Haha time to open the necron hate-box...
1 SM sergeant ran down 20 warriors in 1 cc phase in 4th ed (The rules were different but it is still hilarious)
If the side parts of the Monolith warp AT ALL in the box you can do absolutely nothing to fix it besides trying to bend it and it will not stay together. (true story, firsthand experience)
Spamming warriors keeps the army together, but also makes it SUCK. It fails horribly against anything with a large amount of armor and glancing it to death just doesn't work.
The book is like the DE book in that some units are awesome and extremely useful while some are just horrendously bad (pariahs, flayed ones, heavy destroyers, tomb spyders *sometimes)

Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

Reasons not to play Necron:

1. 5th edition is mechanized.

2. Necron Anti-Tank sucks.

3. Phasing out is easy to achieve with focused effort.

I think if a Necron player ever beats me in a game, I will pay them money.
