So this is my kids army. He's very proud of it, but we've only played at home. The FLGS is very friendly, but I'd like him to take a decent force with him. So for 1500, which of these would you pick? What am I missing? Which are the fluffy fun but otherwise crap units? This is 1650 give or take, so we don't need all the units all the time.
Oh, and based on a thread here we're using Goth Rockers as the Waagh banner, treating them the same way an ammo runt works, and if the roadie Nob gets killed they leave to get beer.
And, thanks for any help.

All nobs need power klaw and boss pole especially with only 12 boyz
one rokkit is pretty useless in a boyz squad. Those should be slugga boyz in a trukk. Shoota boyz are for sloggin.
30 Sluggas would be better as shoota boyz
5 lootas is pretty useless. it would be different if you had 2 of them but you don't
Your army seems to be going for a speedfreaks army but has a lot of mixed and spread out elements such as your fast attack slot. Having 3 separate units of 1 deffkopta with rokkit and buzzsaw is a lot better than the 5 stormboyz and war trakk

Some of the model choices are based on what he really likes rather than what is most effective. There isn't really a direction for the army, its just how it turned out.
But basically, second set of Lootas, a few more PKs, and leave the shootas on foot is stuff we can do, thanks

Don't be so hasty OP.
What does your son want to play as? Is there a theme? Does he like getting up close and personal? Staying back and shooting? Does he talk about the tactical opportunities on a field, or is he more of a "measure and roll dice" kind of kid? How old is he?
There's a lot that could be said, and advice to be given, but knowing if he's GOING to use certain models or units regardless of tactical common sense, or if there's a theme he'd like to pursue....those are things that really have to be elaborated on before any decent advice can be given.

OK then, here's the full details. I guess specific points builds are less of an issue, its more with this as a start, what is the best way to play orks and have fun.
What we have to work with is...
Warboss - PK, Twin Linked Shoot, Cybork, Boss Pole, Ammo Runt
Boyz - Got 10 shootas, about 36 sluggas, 1 rokkit, 4 big shoota
Nobz - Got 10, 3 with PK, 2 big choppa, 2 kombi weapon. 4 have boss poles
Gretchin - The basic 10 plus herder with the shock pole
Lootas - basic 5 (1 mekboy)
Stormboyz - basic 5
Killa Kans - with rokkit, big shoota, and grotzooka
War Trakk with twin big shoota
3 deff copters with twin rokkits
2 trukks with wreckin' ball, planks, extra armor, stik chuckas
Battlewagon with kill cannon, 4 big shootas, extra armor, ard case, ram, stik chukkas
Looted wagon, boom gun, big shoota, rokkit, ard case.
On the vehicles not much is glued down so its easy to not run with all the options.
Play style wise, he tends to be shooty but i'm trying to get him to see orks have other strengths. He likes vehicles, particularly the small stuff like the kopters and trakks. He chose Death Skulls as a clan as he love the idea of them looting everyone else's good stuff. We turned a chimera into his first looted tank. He's 10, just getting into the game so doesn't really have the experience or a play style yet. And I'm just getting back into it having not played in about 15 years.

I personaly take a pretty cheesy 1750, im sure you could shave 100 pts off the list your about to see, it's VERY effective, i only get a somp score of 2 in most games for it tho (out of 5) sometimes 3 depending on what others bring.
It's very spear heady
Here it goes:
HQ:
Warboss on Bike, w/ Bigchoppa Bosspole, cybork body n' 'eavy armour
BigMek with KFF
Elites:
15 Lootas
Boss Skinrot w/ 9x kommandos
Troops:
1. Nobz 5x, 1 upgraded to painboy, bosspole, all with cybork bodies and all with 'eavy armour, 1 poweklaw, Waaagh! banner & Skittbombz.
(most expensive unit on the board, but with pain boy and 50 points on invuls and armour they are worth it keep em in the middle battlewagon w/bigmek with KFF)
w/ dedi tran Battlewagon w/ deffrolla, wreckin ball, armour plates, bigshoota.
2. Nob w/ Power klaw & bosspole
19 boyz with slugas & choppas
3. Nob w/ Power klaw & bosspole
19 boyz with slugas & choppas
Fast Attack:
1. Warbike squad w/ Nob w/ Power klaw
5x warbikes (Warboss joins these mofos for da' killn')
Heavy Support:
Battlewagon w/ deffrolla, wreckin ball, armour plates, bigshoota. (but boyz in here!)
Battlewagon w/ deffrolla, wreckin ball, armour plates, bigshoota. (but boyz in here!)
you now how have a front armored convoy of 14 with a kustom force field cover save of 4+ after they have pen or glanced!!
your nob BW is protected on it's side armour by the other two BW, and if your not putting Bikes in reserve you can hide them behind the wagons & keep up!
3 deff rolas mean that anything that trys to stop you in your traks dies, and now all you have to worry about is where there biggest clump of men is and flat out all the way there, once the boyz are out, go dodgem cars on you enemy vehicles with those deff rollas!.
your lootas will be laying down strength 7 hits on everything so they can glance or pen some vehicles on high rolling, with a possibility of 45 shots you should be able to do this once every round!
kommandos infil and move through cover, instant knock out unit at the first 2 turns, even if you have to do waaagh! on 2nd turn it's worth it.
watch as your enemy gaks his pants thinking his cheese army out does you, not even deamon princes with lash can win, they can't touch vehicles!!!! well sort of...
Just make sure you make your sacrifices to the dice gods before you play, even the best stratergy can fall apart on your lack of worship to them
that's my 2 bobs

You might not agree, but I happen to think Blood angel are quite a bargain, for the quality of the miniatures. I've never seen a marine kit better than the sanguinary Guard. Those have to be some of the best models they make.

Alright. With that in mind, here's what I'd tell you:
1. Looted wagons are a big no no. They're inefficient, overcosted and underpowered. Avoid like the plague.
2. Deffkoptas are nice. Use them.
3. You can convert Big shootas (or shoota boyz) into Lootas with a bit of ingenuity. Also worth your time.
4. Whether you play assault or shooty based ork lists, there's room for Lootas, and you should get 10 of them to have two units of five at least....and as time goes on, expand that to enough to take units of 15.
5. Warbuggies / trakks - they have a use, but primarily as a screening unit; I use warbuggies to effectively block things from getting to deep strike around my battlewagons, or from assaulting them; that kind of thing.
6. Read THIS. There's some good advice about theming an Ork army.

Thanks for the help, much appreciated.
I'm stuck with at least one looted wagon just to stick with the fluff of his army. That and its his favorite model. Aside from that, the looted thang is being covered by orks carrying SM and IG equipment (although having it all counts as shootas, etc).
I'll work on some more lootas, a couple more war trakks (expensive models, they need an update) and probably the deffrolla upgrade for the battlewagon.
And then come back for more help once he's got a bunch more games behind him.

no worries man, if you must take a looted wagon, use it as a trukk dedi, as they are base the same points and can both transport 12 troops. however, the looted wagon is front 11 side 11 back 10. not 10-10-10. however it may cost your 5pts to put the bigshoota you get for free on trukks on the looted wagon.
can't win em all hey?
I take a 2 looted wagons 2 trukks and a battle wagon in 1000 pts games. skinned down tho. i can then transport my horde most of the way up the field!
and don't press dat! is not such a bad rule, you don't blow up on it! but moves towards the enemy!
ramshakle can do the same, but in there turn! but also have oposite effect of moving your boyz further away

The best thing you can do for your son is to make sure he doesn't play "TFG" at the game store. You have a hodge podge list (i.e., typical kid's list, so no worries there), so, really, it can go in a dozen directions. More important is to have fun and figure out what he likes to do within the game. Personally, I'd try to keep his games closer to 1000 or 1250 points, as what he's got right now don't work together that well, but at 1K, you could have a small speed freek list or small footslogging list that could be decent, and more important, fun.
Speed Freeks:
Boss plus nobs in a battlewagon
Trukk boyz x 2 or three (use looted wagon as another trukk, perhaps?)
Deffkoptas
Loota fire support
Wartrakk if you have the points
Footsloggers:
Boss
2 big units of boyz, with PK/BP nobz as leaders
Gretchin
Lootas and kans for fire support
The Stormboyz don't have enough to really work yet, so I didn't include. If he likes them, he should get them up towards max size if possible.
A big mek with a kustom force field would help both lists, and otherwise, build up your slugga boyz, trukks, and lootas (list 1) or boyz (shoota boyz), and lootas/kans for the footsloggers. Have fun!
