what do you mean by number?
I own a Tokyo Marui M5 A5 (M5A5) AEG
with an upgraded 500 fps motor. it will imbed pellets in your skin from 50 yards away. http://www.trinityairsoft.com/p-44-tokyo-marui-m5-a5-m5a5-aeg-airsoft-gun.aspx
I also have a Tokyo Marui
Tokyo Marui Scorpion vz.61 AEP http://www.airsoftatlanta.com/product_p/17530.htm
I just bought them because they are guns I could not own without Class 3s or being in law enforcement. And because they look super cool, and Tokyo Marui makes them VERY lifelike. Mine do not have orange tips, and I just own them to keep on the wall and target shoot in my apartment and shoot at my friends. hehe.

Number: I'm rather unsure what you mean by number, but since you state this thread is a head count, I assume you're trying to divine some sort of statistic concerning the number of Dakkaites that participate in the airsoft hobby on some level. In such case, I'd be the third respondent to this thread matching those criteria. Guns I've had: Over the 4 years I've been an airsofter, I've had numerous guns come and go. I've had at least 4 G36s, 2 M4s, 2 SCARs and various pistols, shotguns, SMGs, and sniper rifles. At the moment I've got nothing more than a VFC SCAR and an upgraded Tokyo Marui Glock 18. How much I care: Very much. I've played on as professional a team as one can play on in a largely usponsored sport such as Airsoft. We held regular meeting and practices, had an official patch design, and all 12 of us attended games in a standardized uniform. We all wore Multicam, although specific tactical gear composition was left up to the individual operator/player. Now I am without a team, since I've moved to a radically new area. I'm searching for one, though.

Hehehe i believe i just got told.
Yes, i may think in a machismo 'end-all be-all' frame of mind, but its my oppinions that when you ARE still young, you should try out new things. Paintballing is alot of fun, and the element of pain makes it all the more exciting. You dont just get people standing around shooting each other like in airsoft (believe me, i know) as knowone really enjoys gaining 40 bruises across their body.
And im sorry, but how is paintballing any less grown up than airsoft(If that was what you were insinuating) You both run around in the woods pretending to be soldiers.

I'd love to, but in the UK I believe it's a bit more complex for it to be legal.

No... I believe I just got told. I definitely wasn't expecting such a level headed and measured response. Doubly so on the internet!
I've tried both, and simply found Airsoft more enjoyable. I never liked the speedball style of play, and if you're going to play a tactical game, why not go the whole 9 yards and play with gun that look and act like the real thing, instead of a gas tank and a hopper with a trigger. Dressing up like a soldier works so much better if you can actually strap some sort of magazine to your body, instead of a tube of neon colored balls.
As for the pain thing, like I said, I've tried both, and my decision to play airsoft is solely based on a perception of airsoft as a more "realistic" wargame. It has nothing to with my tolerance for pain. Furthermore, airsoft can be just as painful. Unlike a painball gun, airsoft BB's can and will break the skin. I've received bruises from paintball guns, but nothing compares to the pain of finding and removing the three airsoft BB's that got lodged in my thigh. What's more, is that airsofters don't use masks. Every veteran has been shot in the face at least once, and we've all proudly worn the forehead and cheek welts as badges of honor. I suppose that's why I get annoyed when the paintball crowd act all high and mighty, and say that airsofters can't take a hit. What's more is simply the logical disconnect where someone needs to defend their game of choice by claiming it is more painful. That's not a plus to most sane people, not to mention the fact that it simply isn't true.

I've never thought airsoft to be all that good. I paintballed for years; loved the tactical woods ball and the speedball.
I've seen paintballs break skin (and no, not the frozen solid ones). Get shot from 3 feet away and skin WILL break. I saw a guy in a tournament get shot with 8 rounds from 3 feet away in his nuts. He immediately dropped, curled up and started puking and bawling. TO called paramedics and he got carted off on a stretcher. Scary stuff that way as too many shots to the testicles can kill you (it sends your body into shock much like blood loss and can even cause hemoragghing in the main artery leading to the pelvis).
As for not wearing a face mask when you get shot with bb's cruising at 100's of feet per second is just stupid. I assume airsofters at least wear goggles? If not then airsofters are doubly stupid.
From 30 feet away I'd rather get hit by a plastic BB than a marble sized paintball traveling at the same speed.
I always thought the "look at me trying to look like a soldier" idea of airsoft was lame. 98% of who I played paintball with were Marines/Air Force/NG men/women so the last thing they wanted to do on weekends was to play soldier. That was their daily/monthly job. Paintball (at least speedball) let them dress up in snazzy jersey (2 dozen men/women I was a part of had a team even with banner and jerseys and a radio spot) and khaki shorts (khakis are great for paintballing in), shoot markers (guns) capable of 20+ paintballs/second and go crazy. Speedball was a huge adrenalin rush, even more so than woodsball. Sure woodsball was more like "dress up soldier" but speedball was the caffeine to the decaf of woodsball.
Paintball of course being way more expensive.

I can say the G 36 is as adaptable as an M4. Basic upgrades can allow the gun to fill pretty much any role on the field. If you can get used to the overall feel of the gun in your hands. The stock G 36 i had, had an insane fire rate. Now that its upgraded its a bb hose.

Excuse my ignorance, but how do you play Airsoft properly? I used to work for a Farmer, who did allot of clay shoots, and then tried diversifying into Airsoft when it was first appearing in the UK (15-20 years ago). We built a Killing-house in a large shed but I don't think it really took off. So I have used Airsoft guns, a mix of pistols - mostly Berretas and glocks and a Mossberg pump, but couldn't see what they brought to running aroung like a loon that you couldn't do better (as a game) with paintball. The aesthetics and feel I get but is it (as I imagine), you get shot put you hands up and walk-out deathmatch type scenarios or rather more complicated?

I myself enjoy the mil sim feel of airsoft, tactics and movements on a large scale. It is played on an honor system, if your hit you signal you are out. Some people play with a medic system allowing hit players to reenter the game without re spawning. Until you invest in a decent weapon( assuming you have store brand guns) you can't grasp the differences from paintball. Ranged shots using sights and scopes. The weapons are more accurate at long ranges making fire fights longer and more exciting.
The best part about airsoft, you can blend experienced players and new players and still have a good day. Most guys are quick to help the new guy, as in most sports.
