So my friend and I are planning to go to Games Day, as well as start up new armies for 5th edition. I've been eager to collect Imperial Fists, but as more of a modelling+painting project than for actual gaming. That being said, I think I'd like to give Orks a go. They seem very fun to play and collect and guarantee amusing games, no matter who wins. I've been reading the articles on Ork tactics, as well as looking over various posts Dashofpepper (surprise, surprise) has made on them.
I've concluded I'm interested in a mechanized Ork force based on assault (though I'm still "up in the air" on which kind of boyz to take). I'm considering starting out with buying the Battleforce+Codex. Eventually, I'll probably purchase the Megaforce along with more Trukks, AoBR Deffkoptas, an HQ and whatever else I'll need to expand. Also, I'll admit I don't know terribly much about the different klans besides the basics, but I think I like the Bad Moons for their color scheme and wealthy superiority.
Some tips and advice on using Mek Orks on the tabletop would be very helpful, along with some HQ suggestions. (Can't decide on a Warboss on Bike+Nob Bikers or a Warboss+Nobs in a BW) Thanks in advance!

Best advice to give you: Go check out the army list forums and read about the other mechanized lists in there. You'll find good motivation.

I've looked around and I'm pretty certian I'd enjoy a shooty or assaulty mech army. I've thought about incorporating Kans into a mech army, though I don't know how it'd play. I guess I'd have to buy the codex and see for myself! However, I'm a bit torn between Orks and Marines at the moment. On one hand, I'll have a mob of characterful, choppy Orks; on the other I'll have disiplined, zealous Astartes. I like the looks of both, but I do admit I like the fluff of Space Marines a bit more. I'm a bit afraid if I go with a particular army, I'll look back at my choice and miss the opportunities I could have with the other one.

Ah, but there's where you're in luck. See, you can choose one army to build up and just set the other army on the backburner. You can always go back and flesh the second one out at your leisure later on. So, it's not necessarily a "one or the other" type of situation.

If your torn get Aobr first, it cost is great (for GW that is) because you also get a rule book. You'll get both armies and can build from there. Because so many people play space marines I'd say to go for orks, who doesn't love being different

- Orks, 4175 points
- The face of an opponent when you lose five dozen models and say "that's it?", priceless. |

@Cynthia: Yeah, perhaps that'd work. Money's a bit of an issue though, so I want to concentrate on just one army at the moment.
@despoiler: True, AoBR is a pretty great deal considering all you get with it. I could build up my Orks from there and put the Marines on hold. Not sure what I'd do with another "pocket rulebook," but nevermind that!
I do have a few general Ork questions though:
-In a Mek list, do Sluggas in Trukks generally work better than Shootas in Trukks? I suppose it depends on the style and theme of the list, but I see more players advocating for the Sluggas.
-In a strict WYSIWYG tournament or group, would the "red paintjob" option apply to the rule? I've been wondering because I've been thinking of painting Orks as Bad Moons and they're yellow.

I don't really think people will care, just tell them before hand, because following that logic you could not paint a trukk red and not have the upgrade. In small squads I take sluggas, in big squads I take shootas.
