The goons over at SomethingAwful.com have been running a year-long painting competition, and are looking for more people to join in!
The competition works by 'oathing' to complete a project for the month, usually assigned a month beforehand, and you win points for showing WIP photos, basing, and of course completing the 'oath' itself. Every month also has a certain theme to it, such as the 'Wounded Warrior' where you must model some sort of wound, scar, or chipped armor on a model, and every couple of months there is a Bonus Round where you are given a chance to assemble objective markers, terrain, or even dioramas to earn extra points.
Note - This contest isn't limited only to Warhammer 40k, or even Warhammer Fantasy. If you oath a model that is similar to a codex or army book unit and is approved by Fix, then go hog wild! Examples include: A Norsemen team for Blood Bowl counting as Wolf Scouts from the Space Wolf codex, a Reaper miniature as a Wood Elf Lord, or even a Warjack as a Dreadnought. See the thread by clicking the above banner for more details.
And what do you get for all this hard work? Fabulous prizes, of course! This contest has gained sponsorship from such entities as Apocabitz Now!, Dragon Forge, and even the Black Library! The end of every month gives you a chance to win some loot, and at the end of the contest in February we'll have even more to give! So if you're looking to start a new army, want to win some free stuff, or just need motivation to finish whatever is sitting in the back of your closet, we invite you join us. Click on the banner to read over the rules and see if you're interested!
Below are slideshows to the completed models from every month:
-For February, click HERE!
-For March, click HERE!
-For April and the Dioramas, click HERE!
-For May, click HERE!
Disclaimer:
It's been brought to my attention that this could be misconstrued as advertising for SA (they have a one time $10 signup fee).
Irongob is in no way an official SA competition, just something members there have organised among themselves (and gained backing from GW for). I only want to spread the word that there's a fun competition out there where you can win prizes for doing what you love without being god's gift to miniatures.

Even if you don't end up participating, it's a great thread to follow just to see the entries. Tentacle Party and Bachtere's entries in particular, yeesh...

If you click on the big 'ole banner (the one with the Ork biting into a squig-pepper), it will take you directly to the Oath thread. The thread itself it located in a subforum of a subforum (Traditional Games Discussion of Traditional Games). It's a little hard to maneuver around if you're not sure what you're looking for, so I recommend just using the banner to go directly to the Oath thread. Feel free to ask questions in this thread if you need help. MasterSlowPoke wrote:I'm also in it but my models aren't as fantastic! Dude, you converted Fantasy Ogres into Catachan Ogryns, and modeled your commander resting his foot on a Space Wolf helmet. On Mars.

Quick update from the ringmaster himself, Fix:
Fix wrote:
Oh, PRIZE UPDATE , how I've missed you.
Goons, gals, excellent sirs, I am absolutely overjoyed to be able to announce a new prize today, brought to us by a new sponsor to Irongob Chef.
Those of you who have been following this from the beginning will recall that we're going to be having a special awards ceremony at the end of the year, complete with prize categories. We'll be announcing what those are and what you can win in the coming few months, but that kicks off today. We'll see if it changes how you play the game.
One prize will be awarded to the goon who oaths and paints the most models over the course of the year. Naturally, that person is going to need something to safely transport all their hard work.
I'm pleased to announce that the fine folks at KaiserRushforth have pledged one of their Double Aluminum Multicases to the goon who wins this prize. Not only that, but you'll get your choice of foam trays to go in it to best suit your army!
Now I know what you're thinking: "Are you kidding me? Now I have to paint dozens of more tiny mans?"
I am not kidding you. To win this awesome case, you'll have to paint dozens of more tiny mans. Numerous thanks to the people of KaiserRushforth, for this incredible prize!

And so another month has passed, and with it come the results of hard work.
We've had some amazing entries:
Some entries that were not so good...
Some entries that were just weird:
Some new entries that joined the contest due to this thread, among others:
And a lot of Boar Boyz:
But time waits for no man, and now July is upon us. Are you up to the challenge? A quick word from Fix on what awaits us this month:
Fix wrote:
LAST CALL! 24 HOURS REMAN! BUST THOSE CAMERAS OUT, FELLAS! WELCOME TO OATH DAY!
Fast Attack was perhaps too perfect a choice for this month's theme, because June just went way too fast.
Coming up, July is a big month. With such loose restrictions, I hope we'll see some incredible oaths this month. We're already seeing the big gun batch painters like SRM, KTS, and overthefalls lay out HUGE oaths for July in hopes of grabbing that double multicase from our sponsor, Kaiser Rushforth. I expect that the coming months are going to see a series of competitive dramas as we start to really crunch the numbers, and, of course, announce more prizes.
Those are all things to come, though. Tonight, we've got some immediate business to take care of.
First of all, we're coming up on a July 1st sunrise in Austrailia, a country we will never forget for that time it ran into that burning building and saved all those helpless orphans and set them loose in the outback in accordance with proper trap and release protocol. To honor their bravery, we're excited to announce that the July Irongob Ingredient is:
A Wolf in Another Wolf's Clothing!
One of these things is not like the other. Your unit has been infiltrated! A traitor amongst their midst! To the best of your abilities paint and model at least one soldier in your unit whom belongs to a different army entirely, but is trying to blend in for their own devious purposes.
Reminder: you may be as direct or as subtle in incorporating this ingredient as you wish, including bending the definitions of what it means to be of a particular unit. Just be ready to defend your decisions if challenged.
Hoo brother, that's going to be an interesting one!
Next up, you're probably wondering what comes after the July Free-For-All, right? Well IronGob Chef is going back to its roots for August, because certain work needs to be done in this contest. August is going to be a very industrious month compared to the carefree July. We're looking for workhorses. Therefore, the categories for August are:
August 40k: Troops
August Fantasy: Core
There's a few things already lined up for the next few days, including a new monthly prize sponsor I can't wait to roll out, but first things first let's see what you guys can punch out on Oath Day! The 24 hour clock starts.... NOW!
This month is probably the best time to enter, as there are no requirements for what to paint. Got a box of core troops from your new Fantasy army that you started for 8th ready to be worked on? Did some friends get you started on Battlefleet Gothica, and you have some Strike Cruisers to paint up? Maybe you purchased some styrofoam for the purpose of creating some terrain for your buddies to play with. Whatever it may be, give us a look!

Quick prize update:
Fix wrote:
Sweet, underlit lucifer what is going on here? Oh wait, I know.
On this, the day of IronGob Chef's Executive Producer, Papa Nurgletti's Daughter's Wedding , some housekeeping. Two items:
A NEW SPONSOR has appeared!
Goons, this day is a festive occasion. Prizes seem to have exploded from all corners. Many seem poised to ride on the accomplishments of one boastful boy among us, but another has come along for those who just keep doing what you're doing.
I'm pleased to welcome ArmyDice to the IronGob Chef lineup of prize sponsors! Our good buddy Scott has contributed a set of twenty custom-cut dice for a random oath keeper per month from here till the end of the contest! Zounds! We'll call it the 'Dem Bones prize.
Oh, and one other thing. The winner of this prize won't be picking the set of dice they get. I will. Thanks, ArmyDice!
Secondly, we had a good month of new contestants in June, and it looks like there's no shortage of those coming in for July. It looks as though we've caught Papa Nurgletti in a good mood on this, the day of his daughter's wedding, and he's extending the bonus point bounty for new oathers one final month! What's more, he's expanded it!
Pleasing Papa in July:
All new oathers for July and all existing contestants who have not issued an oath since April will receive three (3) bonus points for new oaths this month. What's more, they can earn 3 (three) points for the goon who brought them to this thread!
Don't worry, any of you who have already been awarded points for those new oaths this month will have your scores increased accordingly.
How lucky we caught him in a good mood! Sure, Mr. Nurgletti said something about some strings being attached, or hitched or something or another, but I'm sure it's nothing. Probably wedding-speak.
There you have it, folks! In addition to a free book from the Black Library, a custom-painted avatar, free bases from Dragon Forge, etc., you now have a chance to pick up some custom-made dice.

Time for our regularly-scheduled, monthly update: July! (Click to see pictures of completed oaths! ) This month's Secret Ingredient was the "Wolf in Wolf's Clothing," with the idea being to include a model in your oath that did not obviously belong with the others; an interloper, as it were. Some were less, uh, subtle than others: Some were far less obvious. Can you spot the secret cultist in the picture shown here? Even Sly Marbo DUKE NUKEM decided to show up, and much rejoicing was had. And perhaps copious amounts of alcohol, but rejoicing above all. However, in a month where you could literally paint anything, some felt obligated to just paint as many greenskins as humanly possible: That last picture contains at least 60 Orkz. A heady task for even the most seasoned of batch painters, but none of these guys have anything on forums user Tadhg, the Iron Man, who painted an entire army in under a month: Altogether, this crazy man-machine painted the following: - 200 Ork Boyz -A Warboss -2 Nobz -4 Interlopers -5 Objectives - 10 Deff Koptas -And, seeing as he still had an extra 3 1/2 days left, 10 Lootas and 2 Mekboyz Shine on you crazy diamond. In addition to the normal round of Oaths, there was a 'bonus round', where posters could complete at least 5 objectives, themed appropriately to their army, for bonus points. Pictures of everyone's objectives can be found here. With that out of the way, we move on to August! Now for a word from the honorable chairman, Fix: Fix wrote: There are a couple matters that need addressing this evening. Let's take them one by one, shall we? The August morning sun is quickly winding its way towards the far east coast of Australia, and we do love our Australian goons up in this thread. So to honor the debts we owe to the island continent down under for the time it found our wallet at the bar and returned it to us without touching the cash inside, let's get a head start on August and make an announcement or two, shall we? August's Irongob Ingredient is: Brace for impact! Something big is coming right at you! Duck, dodge, fix pikes, or get behind something, quick! At least one of your troops can see his name clearly written on the bullet (bomb, hurled axe, divebombing Harpy) that's winging its way at him, and is reacting to the lethal threat accordingly. Per usual, you may be as direct or as subtle in incorporating this ingredient as you wish, including bending the definitions of what it means to be of a particular unit. Just be ready to defend your decisions if challenged. Next up! Can you even believe the word September is upon our lips? As we roll on into August, the generous offers by our Executive Producer, Mr. Nurgletti are no longer on the table. I wonder what sort of thing will take their place in the months to follow? The categories for September are: 40k: Elite Fantasy: Special Let's all wish everyone who is still cranking away on their July oaths luck in finishing, because the clock is officially ticking! Now let's see some models! And there you have it. With 8th Edition released only recently, August is the perfect month to get started on the footsoldiers that will form the 'core' of your army!

Quick bump because I want to share my October month with you guys:
oath complete
One Lamenters Sanguinary Priest. This dude is basically the test model for my army so I learned a bunch trying to figure out how all the parts should be painted. This is the first real freehand I've tried and it mostly came out alright, a few parts of the double helix look gakky but now I know how to sketch it out a bit better. Space marine armor is way tougher to figure out how to highlight than I first thought, either.
The Irongob ingredient is obviously the overdone sorrow of the priest. The Lamenters may be a cursed and extrodinarily lucky chapter, but there's no reason he should be so sad, right? What's on that dataslate that's making him so depressed, anyhow?
Oh god.
