I'm currently in the process of assembling my "counts as" Sternguard (robed marines from the Dark Angel upgrade sprue) and I want to have some combi-meltas in the squad. The thing is I also want the bolters to look different from standard and so I have the Deathwatch upgrade kit. I was wondering what methods there would be for these conversions as these bolters are slightly smaller and less bulky than the standard plastic bolter. I have both plastic and metal melta guns to work with so any suggestions would be welcome.

If you have any Marine vehicle accessory sprues you could remove the ammo clips from the Storm Bolter and use it on your bolters...you will be able to make two bolters in this way and they will fit with the existing Sternguard produced by GW...easy mod!

Here are some of mine (plus my HB conversion)

That's some very nice conversion work there. However I'm not concerned about the actual bolters as I'm happy with the Deathwtach bolters as they have an elite "carbine" look to them plus they have scopes and integrated ammo selectors. My question is how to convert these more compact bolters into combi-meltas so any suggestions in relation to that would be most appreciated.

ok! i have an idea for you! cut the end of the bolter off (the barral) and move it up and glue on a melta barral under it. Just a thought.

Do you have a scope? (scout sniper box set),

cut off the scope on the metal bolter, glue on (superglue obviosly) the meltagun, then glue on the scope on top,

With a little bit of green stuff you can redirect the cable to the scope

That was my original thought however due to the smaller profile of the Deathwatch bolter the melta gun nozzle covers all of the front of the bolter except the sight so there wouldn't be any room for the bolter barrel. Thanks for the suggestion but I'm guessing that the only practical way is to have the melta underslung.

Edit: Overslung is the other option although I think the addition of the scope would make the weapon look too "busy". However cutting off the original scope and having the original cable lead to a small fuel pack on the the side is an interesting option.

Maybe have the scope on the side of the added melta sponson on the top.

The melta-pistols from the Bloodangels Deathcompany sets are quite small so might have good conversionpotential for you. Bitzshops are your friend or sell of the rest of the set as it gives you two pistols. Although you can convert the flamepistols to look like quite like meltapistols, too, giving you 4 pistols.

You cut off the bolters nozzle, move it up a to a level with the eagle. Basically above the line that seperates the grip below the eagle. As you also cut away the grip below the eagle. This gives you room to fit the cut down version of the aforementioned meltapistol. That invloves quite some chopping but I think this is the best approach considering you want to use the Deathwatchbolters as a base.
