Somewhere in south-central England.

It consists of a set of tiles and a set of rules.

The tiles are rather nice and can be laid out in a huge number of combinations, especially as you can also use the Mighty Empires tiles.

The Hive City tiles are a separate buy though.

The rules are very thin.

Basically to have a campaign you get some friends and make an army each in 40k. You share out the tiles and plonk them on the table one by one to make a map. Everyone puts their flag in their own tiles.

You then play a game of 40k. If you win, you are allowed to roll a die to take a tile off one of the other guys. There are some modifiers to the roll, for example it is harder if the tile does not border one of your tiles.

The game proceeds like this until one player has all the tiles or something.

As a campaign system it is rubbish because there is no relation between the battles and the map.

As a game it's a bit pointless since you could as easily just dice off against each other to decide who gets to roll to capture a tile.

If you want to play a proper campaign, the tiles offer a very nice visual way of organising it, but you need a new set of rules.

In summary, as a map set the tiles are nice but the game bit is poor.

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Which is why I'd toss the rule structure that comes with the box and just make up your own.

Are there any other rules people have made up that are available and work? Me and my friends are trying to organise a campaign between us, and indeed the rules GW offer sucks... Not at all what we wanted. Tiles are very nice though

I wrote some more in-depth rules but they are not play-tested and finished.

I will PM them to you and you can have a go with them.

No, It's not worth the buy.

THIS is what it is, exactly. A 40K version of Mighty Empires.

Your cash would do better going to more minis, and you can use some old maps, pins and a couple of extra side items to build up your own campaign system.

"What is it" exactly is a tabletop version of an RTS game. You explore a hex, you fight out a battle against an opponent, and then you lay down more and more hex's as the game progresses. It was no accident that GW dropped this out alongside Apocalypse and Planetstrike. It is just a placeholder system for you and opponents to build up a campaign system and have stuff to fight over. It is completly random, and the game won't last very long and die of boredom if you try to keep it going like they want you to play it.

I say a better alternative is to grid out an old map, fight the battles based ont he terraign on the map, and use differnt colored pins to represent the sides fighting, different extra things like the manufactorums, bases, and other assets, and play out your map battle campaign on the map. even if you don't go and battle for every square, you can make up some good rules to give you something interesting, such as put a random giant monster, or a rogue psycher, or a genestealer cult in the hex and fight them out using the Necromunda small scale rules.

Other things you can do is that you can go the low level route of playing as if each figure was a unit and using basic 40K rules fight it out for low level battles, such as a fight for the ancient fortress, or tunnel system, using the space hulk tiles, or a butcherblock paper with the grid squares on it to fight for the asset. Other things could include, making a couple of those assets from city fight, put them on the map, and then gain an advantage, or something extra if you hold it after the game.
