Before I write anything I just want to say that my opinions are based entirely on what's on the GW website, I haven't read the rules for this supplement so if I'm wrong about anything that's why.

I get the idea behind this expansion, massed tank battles are cool. There's nothing wrong with this. However one of the introductory pictures on the website for this expansion (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?categoryId=&pIndex=1&aId=9300002a&start=2) just makes the whole supplement seem ridiculous to me. The idea behind tank on tank fights is manuever warfare. This is clearly not possible if you were to take this picture as representing what a standard battle using this supplement looks like.

I like the idea, I really do, but it seems that the concept falls short on execution. If you really want to fight large tank battles, you need to do it at a smaller scale than 28mm. It just so happens that GW makes models in the 40k universe at a smaller scale, it's just too bad that they don't give it the support it needs to become anything other than a "niche" aspect of the hobby.

If you don't like it, don't do it. Or go play Epic.

For those of use who have lots of tanks & MCs (over a dozen Guard tanks alone), this is good.

That picture is a fail: The standard spearhead game, thanks to it's special rules, IS all about Manuevering. The Battle report in the book demonstrated this prefectly - if they'd simply moved forward and shot each other, the out come would've been vastly different. As it was, thanks to their manueverability, the Eldar won 5-0, but if they'd simply sat there or just sped forward, they would've been massacred by the Guard.

That's a GW "oooh and ahhhh" shot. Count the tanks, and see how may points those armies are: I count the Orks and Space Marines as over 3k points. When you've over 3k you need a board bigger than 4x6, which is what they're playing on. That picture is not meant to represent a game, but to look good. If you want to see what a game would be like, read the Battle Report in White Dwarf.

If your issue with Spearhead is mobility, all vehicles in Spearheads get something similiar to Power of the Machine Spirit. A board is going to be only as cluttered as a regular game, and infact most people will put less terrain on so tanks can manuever.

More than simply fielding lots tanks, this game is about fielding your tanks in new ways. Hell, my CSMs only have 5 tanks and a couple walkers, but Spearhead lets me change how I play my army entirely.

I really think it'd be nice if some flavor of Spearhead mk.2 makes its way into 6E Rulebook.
