I was wondering around my Local gaming store and was looking at the destroyed rhino...
...And decided to make my own.

here are some pictures

Basically what i did was take some Foam board and cut out 4 sections in the silhouette of a rhino. Then cut out the top and bottom sections. Glued on some leftover bits from my vindicator kit (side loading ramps & from view port) and found a piece from my rhino. Glued pieces together with PVA glue and pinned it with some really small nails. Cut out the base from some scrap wood and found some styrofoam. Glued everything to the base and added some sand. Let it dry. Still a WIP but i am happy how it turned out so far.

Why didn't you just buy the terrain from games workshop?

I apologise to anyone who interacted with me around 2009-2012.

Because sometimes, despite what GW may want you to think, it is fun to build things from scratch.

Generally cheaper too

Not a bad start - I assume that you will be neatening the edges of the foam board?

Hope to see it progress soon

Yeah i suppose your right but im not a good scratchbuilder so i say thts a good start for one!

Yeah I enjoy not spending money on stuff I can somewhat make. Yeah I plan on cleaning it up. The blade I was using was dull so I bought a new one. I plan on making it somewhat a camp fire scene in front of the rhino and adding a tree or two.

Haha! Pretty cool.

Think you need to thin your paints a little though and apply in several layers. Your blue is quite streaky.

When you are doing the smoke effects on the burnt out rhino, try mixing a little grey into the black to make the burnt areas a bit less uniform. One cool thing I quite like to do is get a very small quantity of the base paint (in your case whatever blue you are using) and just dab and "polish" the paint into the edge of the sooty burnt area - it should soften the edge and so give a more realistic feel.

Sponges are also good for creating wear and tear on vehicles by dabbing small random bits of metalic, black, or whatever paint effect you want, simulating chips in the paint to either the primer, or the metal underneath.

Yeah I ran out of gray before I started this project so when I get some more I will paint it. I will have to use the sponge method... how exactly does it work?

It actually looks like a real rhino, and not a scratchbuilt one- I'm impressed.

Your fire is red and then instantly black, you need some gray inbetween the red and black.
And also, if you ever make some more ruined tank terrain(which you definetely should cause that is freakin awesome), you should try using a heat gun.

Yeah that looks really good (except for the brushstrokes in the painting). I dig the little canvas overhang.

Yeah I actually have a Vietnam Era US tank (M-60) sitting on my shelf waiting to be use but I am debating on using it as a looted tank or terrain.

Yeah this was my first attempt at the smoke... Notice up above what I wrote " Yeah I ran out of gray before I started this project so when I get some more I will paint it." once I get some I will paint it. Yeah i based it in Chaos black and had some problems because of it being so thin so another coat should do the trick...

Nice Job,
Asside from the paint comments made previously, the only thing I would have added is one more layer of detail with some thin card. It would have helped the sides look a bit less plain.

Still, it's a very effective piece of terrain.

Its looking good, I'm really, really! not keen on the blue paint job, but that can be touched up with another layer I'm sure. The battle damage and burnt metal style looks really good though and the use of original parts does make it look like it was once a Rhino and not some stratch built thingie so Kudos and keep up the excellent work

If you make any alterations or improvements please post the results

The polishing method is kind of like drybrushing but it works really well for giving smoky effects.

For the armour chipping, check here.

Here's another easy way to make ruined AFV terrain. All you need is playdough and plaster...

Here is the updated version. I applied another layer of blue paint and added some gray into the black to break it up. I also added in some more color to the fire to help it transition a bit better.

I like the canopy idea. Like someone has been using it for shelter for a while. Very cool.

This vid show a 1/35 scale tank used in a similar way. It was melted with a hairdryer.

Looks good, the tanks paint could use a little more detail, but great job modeling.

Are you going to paint the sand? In my opinion it looks too bright, but if it matches it the table you are going to use it on, then that wouldn't be a problem. Really like the Rhino by the way.

Looking good. I would seriously consider painting the sand at the very least to make it look more scale. I hope to see some more images when you finish.
