I want to make some very thin, stringy, spiderweb or dripping gore style goo hanging off various effed up genestealer bits. Can't figure out how it's done, with glue I assume. Hope you guys know what I mean!

I have seen it done by taking a length of hair and then applying layers of either paint or I have heard of using glue to it. Just build up layer after layer till you have the thickness and shape you want

Actually what would be the best (IMHO) would be a hot glue gun. It always leaves those spider web like strands when you use it. also I am sure it would get the Fluid like substance you are looking for and it cools relatively fast compared to like PVA glue and others..

I knew about the hair, but the hot glue, now there's an idea! Have one in the garage, time to bust it out! big plus is that it will remain transluscent, great idea!

All the spider webs at Disney's Haunted Mansion are made with hot glue, so you might be on to something there.

Try using a tooth-pick to dip into the still hot glue and drag it out to create strings, or play with it to get what you need it to look like.

If this was anyother sort of forum anywhere else on the net.... that thread title.....

But yes- hot glue can work. Its a bit tricky to learn how to shape. I'd suggest starting by squirting a little bit on a test surface- then using a tooth pick or the tip of your hobby knife blade to draw it upwards and stretch some strands out. Try not to burn yourself- the stuff is sticky..

...burns!! burns the precious it does!! (my Golem impersonation is only good online)

Hotglue is the best because the thickness and shape are the most easily manipulated.

Just test with different temperature to see which yields the result you want.

I only thought of the hot glue gun because I was putting together some terrain last night and was getting mad because the webs were sticking everything together. Good thinking on using the toothpick something you could throw away if you had too. I wouldn't use the hobby knife... it might get gummed up by the glue and make for a pain to get off.

Another way of doing it is taking translucent plastic frames (from flying bases, necron light rods, etc.) and heating it over a candle (in a good ventilated room of course). Slowly stretching as you heat and when it's really thin remove it. Then cut to apropriate length and for extra drippy effect heat one end again to make it curl up into a drop (very little heat, very fast). I'll try to get a picture of this up soon, as I've done it to a slimey arm.

Thanks guys, I am really glad I started this thread, you guys have been awesome with the info and techniques!

I am going to try the hot-glue method tonight, see how that goes, then I may try the sprue melt technique too.

This is kinda what I am going for, he got the effect right, but the way he applied it, the pattern and the logic of the locations doesn't work for me. But you get where I'm going.

If I recall correctly, hot glue doesn't paint that well. Are you planning on leaving that clear?

If you lightly sand the glue and then prime it, it will take paint nicely. Very very very fine sanding though.

Thanks man, I think I went a little splat happy on him, since the painting is only 50% done, shoulda waited til the end, now I will have to work around those areas very, very carefully.

Oh well, he is just one of many, so at least that isn't going to be a big job compared to the scope of the project! Although, Now I am going to have to figure out some new ways to get goo onto the others

Thanks!

Ya I do, I am a partner at a digital creative agency, so I do a bit of digital painting professionally, but not as often as I would like. Mostly it's 3D, video, graphic and marketting related writing of strategy for me, as you may guess the cases where concept art style digital stuff is appropriate don't come around super often.

Still, it is particularly awesome when a 30 inch screen and a nice big wacom, definitely let's you go nuts!

I have plans to do a proper piece for a PA version of Dante (as opposed to the Terminator version being worked on in my thread), planning on doing something really special with him pose and detailing wise, and to get it right I will be doing proper concept art for him When I get the chance. Basically I need someone to sit between Sanguinor and Astorath, and be immediately recognized as superior and senior to both. Tall order I know, but that's what makes it exciting!

Unfortunately I am going to have to make my way through 15 terminators, 19 hybrids, 4 magi, 3 techpriests and half a C.A.T before he see's the light of day lol.

Hehe very cool I freelance in the same fields, but I end up doing mostly advertising and logo work, doesn't give me much time for painting either. At some point my site will be back up! I liked what I saw of your paintings so far cool cool.
