GW has now announced that free shipping is for ever. I would much rather get a 1-2 dollar on everything and still pay shipping and handling. What does Dakka think? Please answer and comment.

why is it one or the other? why is it only $1-2? If I order from Maelstrom i get 40% off AND free shipping

GW increased most prices by $5, not 1-2.

Either way, I'd want cheaper merchandise price. I buy most of my stuff from the FLGS anyway.

I agree, lower prices...I don't buy from GW online anyway. Although the free shipping is nice for those Direct Only models. Let's face it, free shipping is all we're gonna get anyway. Might as well enjoy it!

You would rather have a pricing plan that saves you money, and causes GWS to get less money from you?

I would prefer price reductions, since I generally purchase locally. If I order an exclusive item, or if my FLGS doesn't have it, I don't mind paying a bit of shipping (especially if it means I get it faster...impatience is my virtue xD ).

I prefer money off products rather than the shipping. Money off shipping is useless to a person like me that buys mostly from shops. Furthermore money off shipping serves only customers of GW mail order. Cheaper products benefit customers of local stores and independent retailers.

Before you had to pay postage for the luxury of mail order, and that undoubtedly deterred some people buying directly from GW. You could make the choice, wait until you visit your local shop and buy it there, or pay extra and get it through the post quickly.

So-called "free shipping", paid for in part by a price increase, is just another way of GW taking sales away from their own independent retailers by making mail order the same cost as the very shops they encourage to stock their stuff. Now you have luxury and access to those conveniently "online exclusive items" at no extra cost. Well, no extra cost as compared to your LGS, it's all paid for by the broad price increase afterall.

I don't care personally, I buy everything off of craigslist/ebay anyways.

When I purchased things from them awhile back it cost me $12 in shipping per order, pretty regardless of the size. So I think that you actually make out better getting free shipping then and decrease in pricing your likely to see from a company with such a captive audiance.

Now however I buy pretty exclusivly from my FLGS and I get free shipping, 15% off GW prices, use of their tabels and terrain, the ocasional free soda/whatever they are giving away and I get to hang out with some pretty cool guys doing what I love.

Once thing they've always done is give free shipping on orders of $100+. I can't say that I've ever made an order that didn't meet this.

So for me the free shipping gimmick has no effect and I would rather see a price reduction.

Trying to figure out what my best deal is for buying stuff. Example, i want a Land Raider Crusader/Redeemer

($1 Canadian = 0.95 American or 0.66 GBP)

Games Workshop Site; $74.50 Canadian
Local Gaming Shop; $59.00 Canadian
Maelstrom; 33.75 GBP which is ~$52 Canadian...plus whatever my Visa decides to screw me over exchange rate wise (usually another 5%, so 2.5 more on that at least) giving me something like....55?

So, local store, get it NOW and pay $4 more, or risk shipping it half way around the world, and having it take at LEAST 3 weeks to save $4?

As far as I know, it's only free shipping within your own country, so no use to us here in Oz.

It is just that I normally try to time purchases with my friends to help save the earth and if we buy 7 items then a dollar off each item is the same as shipping.

I guess my real beef with GW is they jack up prices, but can afford to keep shipping free, you sell models GW, so make you price drops on your products not other services.

I think the free shipping is a good move on GW's part, the shipping charges really showed them up as being a bit behind the times. I can not think of many other retailers that I use that do not offer free shipping [in the UK].

Lower prices are always good but I'm not to fazed by the price increases as I can not think of many [any?] manufacturer/retailers that are dropping prices. I know some people may point to supermarkets reducing prices but this is not the same.

But then only thing I can think of that I have bought off them directly in about 5-10 years was Spacehulk. Obviously that was a special purchase and I don't think I paid shipping on that either?

Free shipping is also good because not everybody buying into GW has a store nearby. If I was 4 hours from the nearest store and didn't know about Warstore or Maelstrom free shipping at GW prices would STILL be cheaper than the fuel consumed driving that distance. 8 hour round trip would be 500 miles (250 each way), which would be approximately $70 in fuel. Now, it's cheaper to pay $25 with free shipping for a box of Sanguinary Guard than it would be for me to drive 500 miles to get that same box for $20.

Hell, I drive 50/miles per day round trip to work and back home. That's $6/day in fuel to go 50 miles. Even 100 mile drive one way (200rnd trip) would be more costly than paying GW's prices with free shipping.

Perhaps canada has more favourable prices than in Aus. Here down under, even a direct pounds-to-dollars conversion from the UK online store shows that we pay about 20% more than them. Plus the distinct lack of FLGS providing any kind of discount at all (at least within my half of the country) makes Maelstrom a very good option.
