So i just finished reading the book last night and other than how vastly different the books are from the tabletop game(One multimelta to stop the advance of hundreds of orks?! ) The only issue i have is it never explained why one of the surface to orbit missles decided to shoot off at the stronghold.
The whole time i was reading I thought maybe Snikrot outflanked with a big mek and rigged the missle to malfunction. But no, not a damn thing .
I have also read helsreach too and is anybody else bothered on how the writers expalin stuff that hasnt happened for example Squad blah blah died that day but here is the fight in the very next chapter. Bugged the hell out of me dont tell me evryone died and then write an epic fight trying to be vauge on whats gonna happen when you just told me 3 pages ago.

In the epilogue, it describes that the Orks had built a large tennis racket type ship in low orbit and swatted the missile back when they saw it coming.
But seriously, I didn't read this yet but read somewhere (SM codex maybe) that the missile suffered a 1 billion chance malfunction that caused it to destroy their own fortress. How could the author of forgot to mention that?

@purplefood: No Helsreach was good it was just they way the writer explained somethings and his writing style was a bit different. Also i wasnt really impressed by both books fight scenes I was looking forward to kantor and Snagod fight through the whole book and was a little let down same with Helsreach. But i had just finished reading the 13 books from the legened of Drizzt Do'urden and if any of you have read RA Salvatore's work you'll know how epic his fight scenes are. @Fiend I love the tennis racket ship. A group of 5 space marines beating the hell out of hundreds of orks is far feteched but ork tennis racket ship sounds just about right They did barely talk about the one in a billion chance once. I belive Kantor was talking to a tech marine and asked how accrute the missles would be and the response was something like "it will only miss when orks and space marines have orkarines babies" HURR HURRR HURR HURRR

@KamikazeCanuck
It was explained in the book that the space the orks were coming from was only about 8 meters wide so only a few would be able to fit through at a time. Also the multi melta opreated much like a plasma cannon with the abilites to hit more than one target.
My guess is the weapon would burn through like 10 or so orks in one shot.

I guess that is possible. Was that multi-melta at least tank mounted? Most meltas have like 6 shots.

IIRC he had 2 full charge packs plus the one in the gun . You only read about him shooting one and then later on in the book you find out he killed all the orks and went to help Cortez

Well im just relaying what the writer wrote im sure there are plenty of thing that are off.
Hell one chapter has a dreadnought which is explained as having a DCCW and autocannon and the very next chapter its a Assault cannon.
So you just have to give some leeway to the writer.

The writer was paid to write the book and you paid to read it, so I don't see much reason to give him leeway. Basic consistency isn't too much to expect. Stuff like one melta armed space marine killing a hojillion orks is why I don't bother reading Black Library books very often.

Yea, its so terrible that the actual game has to introduce game balancing mechanics i know right?
If you cant see a focused beam of atomic fire that goes through a land raider like butter punching through 100 orks a shot, in a 6 foot wide hallway .... yea ...
the games mechanics cant be compared to the fluff, or else space marines shouldnt really ever fail armor saves. only ap3 or better should down them.

Yes, I don't think the fiction should be bound to a game mechanic. Certainly, the weapons shouldn't be vastly different than what is described in the game, but the story is what is important to the fiction, while balance is important in a game.
For what it is worth, a MM used to have a blast marker, perhaps toning it down was a game balance thing and not intended to carry over into the fiction.

I do agree that the background shouldnt be refelected in the game. Otherwise from what i have read so far and being a greyknight player my one PA justicar should be able to kill hundreds of demons, 2 greater demons, chaos lords, and an STC of a titan(GreyKnight omnibus)
The only issue i had was that yes a multimelta should be able to burn through quite a few orks but dpeneding on how far away the orks were from the space marine there was just so many orks(accroding to the author) that eventually he would have been overwhelmed.
I mean reloading the damn thing must take at least 10 secs or so plus i cant imange the fire rate is great.
To be honset, the stories would be boring if they followed the tabletop game. But i think even the lone marine with a MM is a bit of a strech to hold one point from the army of orks. Now if he had a heavy bolter thats a differnt story.
