I am currently watching what appears to be people kicking a ball around a gigantic field in this stadium. It appears to be Mexico vs. Russia. Since there is not much going on in the game itself, I am trying to understand the English commentators in hopes of salvaging some entertainment value from this game.

Nope. Sorry. Cannot understand about 70% of what they are saying. It's not sports terms, it is just cannot understand their English.

Anyone else having this problem?

I've never understood the attraction of football. But I'm completely terrible at it.

Well, there you go. Couldn't even figure out who were the people they were playing against via their conversations.

The problem is that you Americans insist on distorting the English language, then complain when you can't understand what we are saying.

To be fair, Warone, sports commenters have a language all of their own. Mostly stringing well worn phrases together. So if you are unfamiliar with the rules and terms of a game, you are gonna remain clueless.

I have the same problem with American sports
Like gridiron.
First and third? what? I thought that was a Manhattan address. Are they going to mail the ball.
Mind you the local post office used to see many a similar ruckus on a Monday morning when handing out the pensions. Those pensionors could play rough to get a head in the queue.

In your base, ignoring your logic.

Hey, we know what a ruckus and queue are.

Its just that we take english and make it awesome.

Well, then we shall have to declare independence from the English language! We shall now call it Americanese.

Soccer is, like all sports, far more entertaining to play than to watch. Though it is also more entertaining to watch a sport if you play it.

The exception is baseball, which is neither fun to watch, nor play.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.

I disagree.

It is fun to watch when you are in the stadium and looking up the sports scores for the game you are attending on your smart phone. Also, public drunkeness is encouraged.

And it is fun to play when you are getting paid millions of dollars a year to do so.

Man, if you ever come to the UK, you MUST go to a Premiership match - especially at night. The atmosphere is electric.

I almost always agree with Albatross, I can't see why anyone wouldn't.

I thought it was ironic when that player appealed for a penalty for hand ball last night.

The lady did not protest too much.

Was listening to the radiocast of the America and Old America game and there were two commentators; one American and one Scottish.

American guy I understood perfectly.

NO IDEA what the Scottish guy was saying.

How do you guys understand one another there over the pond?

Don't worry about it Warone. They only do it to annoy.

They speak perfectly legible English amongst themselves but as soon as an outsider is within earshot they start wittering on in that most heinous and barbaric babbling.

It's all nonsense. They say things like, "Manny a mickral makks a mackrel." and "It's a braw brick moon lick nick the nick."

I blame that Scottish Beard of theirs Rabbi Bearns. He wrote a lot of this stuff down and set it to verse.

Thanks guys. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't the only person who have this same problem.

To be fair the English duo of TV commentators was much more understandable than the Scottish guy was for ESPN radio.
