Hey all! I'm new to the Dakka forums, but I do frequently browse Dakka's articles for some very helpful information when playing and modding for 40k.

I'm a fairly new player to 40k as well, I picked up Tyranids this past winter and I love playing with them. My painting skills are next to nothing, but I think I've gotten decent at conversions.

OK! After I've explained myself a little let's get to the good stuff. This is a Harpy conversion I did using the Carnifex box. YES I realize the codex claims the Harpy as an equivalent of a "Flying Trygon" But I'm a huge fan of the Carnifex and it's model, and I already had an idea of how I wanted to go about doing it.

There are some things left unfinished here, such as the lack of Spore Mine Cysts and several gaps between the Balrog(yes, Balrog) wings and carapace.
However I tried representing the Cluster Spines on the back using the Carnifex's thorny backside. Everything else should be apparent(Twinlinked Heavy Venom Cannons/Scything Talons)

One thing I noticed about most conversions of the Harpy(that I have saw, anyway) is that people leave out the Scything Talons! I looooooooove scything talons! Why would you do that? Leave out such an awesome weapon! Especially when they can be displayed proudly on the lower end of the model as if they are about to cut the heads off a thousand Space Marines when the Harpy swoops in on them! Not that I have anything against Space Marines....

Oh well, enough of me ranting at 4:30 in the morning! I'm eager to hear yalls feedback on this modification!
I'd like to hear anything you all see wrong or upsetting with this model! Or good feedback is welcome as well...
(I'm also working on a Tyrannofex conversion and I have no idea how to make a rupture cannon... )

Looks like a sweet Harpy conversion, although I would suggest two things:

. Fill in the ball joints on the weapons where the feeder arm would fit. Having such a joint in only one side of the weapon looks a bit odd.

. Swap the position of the claws and the weapons. The backward facing claws ruin the aerodynamic aesthetics a bit, if you know what I mean. If you swap them round, then rotate the claws it should look great.

Other than that, great work!

I too thought the scything talons looked a little wonky backwards like that. But the rest is really cool. My wife assembled her first Fex yesterday and I have to say Im pretty impressed with the kit. Lots of cool stuff and it looks just this side of awesome.

Nice work, I think a small adjustment and your harpy will look the tits

I am evidently labouring under a misconception. A flying Trygon? THAT big?? FMD. I would have done it a very different way but evidently I have no idea how BIG that f*cker is supposed to be. WOW.

As far as the model here, looks like good execution. I actually did a flyrant years ago out of spare parts, and for legs I had a set of scytals like that. I thought it worked nice.

Awesome! Thanks all!

Will do with the holes where the feeder arms are going to fit... I had thought of filling it with green stuff and carving an eye at one point, but have no idea why I didn't do it. O.o WEEeeee Sleep deprivation.

And the reason I have the scything talons backwards is this: I figured this thing has to fly near constantly(like the codex states the Harridan does) So I re-positioned the talons so they would look like it would swoop down and just start cutting into whatever it's assaulting. At first I had them on there backwards, but I eventually cut and rotated so the arms didn't look backwards.

Thanks for the suggestions and awesome feedback! I appreciate it! I may end up making another one in the future as I love all NIDS!

Also, if anyone has any suggestions on a Rupture Cannon for the T-Fex, I'm listening.

C-FEX: Thanks a lot for this thread. I have been really taken with the whole Harpy idea since I first read of them and wanted to convert one up. This thread has really opened my eyes as to some details on what I will nee dot convert this thing. I wont be using your ideas, but I have certainly learned form the thread as a whole so much obliged.

Only problem i have is the tail section, i think it needs to be more bulky and longer.
The small tail just doesent seem to balance it.

Balrog wings are a good call, they fit well
Used them on mine a while ago.

Actually, biomechanically, the reverse talons work for me.

It's not really possible to fly all the time, and the reverse talons, with the way the joints work out, would allow the creature to 'spider' on sturdy wing tips and talons easier than trying to fold the wings like a bird and stilt on forward jointed talons. Birds also have reverse jointed legs, so in makes sense to me.

Also, in the concept of attack, forward facing, reverse jointed talons would allow the beast to cut and chop while flying forward and strafing through enemies. Rear-bladed, forward jointed claws couldn't do that; more requiring a hovering slice/chop kind of action to get the damage done. The reverse jointed talon could feasibly fold underneath and along the body for aerodynamics as well.

I can see, and I like the idea. Makes sense to me.

It looks great, and the backwards talons tha you have on there look fine to me - in fact, I was going to do the same with my Harpy conversions. I too am a huge fan of the harpy, and I want to have two or maybe even three one day. I'm still trying to decide how to make them, but these pictures sure make the fex base sound appealing.
