Subject: First tourney, second place!?

So I recently finished building and fully painting a 1500 pt. Ork force. Now I don't normally play competitively and as such do not write competitive list (this one is a horde list with a grot screen and old Zogwart) but I go down to my local gw to find a friendly game. However when I get there I find out there is a 1500 pt. tourney going on with a need for 1 more competitor. The rules are all models with a av rating and all heavy support choices are half points, of course not knowing this tourney was happening I did not have a list made for it nor do I have models for it made yet so right away I was at a disadvantage but it was free entry so why not test my new army against somethings that will really put it to the test. Immediately I got a score of 9 out of 10 for painting, I do not base my models as I think they look better unbased but everything was painted and though not to a professional standard they look decent on the table.
My first game was a late starting annihilation game (as I got to the store late, not knowing the time it started) against the new BA, now this guy obviously knew about the tourneys rules as he had 2 land raiders, 2 vindicators, 2 predators and 3 dreads. This game was horrible for me, I didn't expect to be fighting a lot of super heavy armor and by the end of it (though it was short as it was late starting) I had only immobilized 1 dread... whoo...
Second game was against guard, it was capture and control with only 1 center objective. This game was a bit closer however the center objective was the only real terrain piece other than 3 craters, plus with the tourneys rules he had A LOT of pie plates dropping on me. A basilisk, and 3 something or others (tanks, not familiar with gaurd) 2 were dropping 5 small plates on me a turn each! And the other had a battle cannon or something. It was not good, I had hoped to hold my guys on the objective until the game ended but on my last turn a destroyed all his troops that were on the objective only to have him drop enough templates to make my boys flee with no chance of regroup, there by ending any chance for me.
Last game was a annihilation with night fight against standard SM lead by Pedro, fortunately he did not know about the tourneys rules either and thus we had evenly matched points wise armys. This coupled with 2 big impassable walls creating a choke point for me to work with. This game went a lot better for me, I used said choke point to my complete advantage with my squad of boys lead by zogwart deepstriking over the walls to get even more of my boys on his side faster. I ended up the victor in this engagement.
What surprised me at the end of tourney was that I ended up tied for second, how did that happen? I guess I made enough points in painting and sportsmanship to come up second, pretty good for entering my first tourney by surprise, at a points disadvantage, with an uncompetitive army, maybe I'll start showing up for more on purpose

My first tournament experience was like this:
"...Ard' Boyz, a tournament with no painting, and no entry free? Count me in!"
I did terrible, though it was a great atmosphere, and matches against people I had never played before.
I have been stuck in the tournament scene ever since, I am even attending the NOVA Open this august.
Good luck with your future endeavours, congrats on doing so well your first tournament!

My first tournament was 'Ard Boyz preliminaries two years ago; frantically painting Tau, got two massacres and a minor loss to get 4th place; have been hooked ever since!

My first tournament was an event at the local store I played at regularly got third. Promptly went to adepticon and got steamrolled by someone named marc parker first game. I have wised up since, and routinely crush heads semi-locally.

Congrats! My first large tourney was this January at the local Iron Man tournament and I actually got Best Overall in much the same way the OP did with high soft scores and average to high battle scores, I have since placed first at a LGS tourney and been crushed utterly in a few other tourneys... I'm also hooked on tournaments and hope to expand my reach to other events this year. That beginner's luck I had was nice though...

Congratz on doing so well in your first tournament!
My first tourny I got rolled, but I was really young so it was to be expected. I have steadily improved since then and once you get into the tournament scene, it gets really enjoyable.
Good luck in your next one!

Congrats!
My first was 'Ard Boyz preliminariess two years ago aswell, I brought a handful of my IG and gray knights, they where one player short just like your story, I didn't have a list made but the story had army builder and a comp and they told me they would wait 10 min for me to make a list, I made a heavy infantry Guard list with a smattering of DHs, unfortunately most my tanks where being borrowed by a friend who asked to use them for the tournament a week ago so I was a large list making and army disadvantage, but I declared I would have fun . I did have 3 Russes and 3 hell hounds and 2 chimeras in my list tho. even tho I too a 10 min slaped together list I ended up taking 4th in the tournament out of like 30 people who planed for this tournament for weeks. In short I was highly proud and had a ton of fun.

Thanks, it looks like the next move is to build a more competitive list and on that note before this thread falls off the boards could some one tell me if the new pack of killa kans include 3 or each ranged weapon or only one of each? They seem like the next obvious thing to get.

They do not have three of each. Some "counts as" or combinations between boxes or converting is in order.

Man, I'm feeling old. My first tourney experience in 40K was sometime in the early 90's. I can't even recall if it was at the beginning of 2nd or the tail end of 1st edition.
Congrats on the 2nd place finish. Good to read that sportsmanship and painting still count for something.

Me too! Way back in 2nd edition! I played my first tournament game to a Space Wolf Army that had I think a total of 6 models!
One of his wolf guard terminators with an assault cannon and a cyclone missile launcher (yes, both) fired all of it's missiles in one shot for a 9" blast marker that took out half my army! Hahaha. I still won that game though, but what a crazy ass game it was back then.
4 turns, half the models and still took twice as long to play.

I remember having a tourney like that. Three of us drove from Jacksonville FL to Atlanta in the early/mid nineties for a single elimination tourney. My first opponent had a Space Wolf army with several Assault Cannon/Cyclone Missile Wolf Guard. The table was devoid of terrain. After 1st turn, my army was absolutely crippled and then eliminated in 2 turns. I spent a lot of time watching others that day.
And GW never did FAQ that abusive combo.
