Well, it falls to game function and balance. The troopers dropped by various means don't have a game mechanic that denies them shooting (outside of that for heavy weapons), whereas the vehicle does. Also, the troopers are restricted to half-range Rapid Fire guns and Assault weapons (generally short-ranged); if the 'speeder is capable of firing, its reach is twice as long, on average. This means that a scatter result would be easier for a 'speeder to make good on, whereas a dropped squad will be SOL for at least a turn.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake;
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Umm. What about termies or other units that can move and shoot heavy weapons?
Wouldn't vehicles fall under that classification, you know, as units that can move and shoot heavy weapons?

You know that IG droppers with that abhuman doctrine that lets them move and shoot heavies can shoot heavy weapons on landing right?

Why should vehicles be treated like basic infantry instead of the reinforced and stable firing platform that they are?

I don't know about game balance, but I really didn't think that dropping speeders was a game balance problem.
There are other things that are more of a game balance issue, like AssCans for instance.

I think two speeders with AC/HB is an exelent choice for killing troops [Which I believe the Speeders were designed for. Protecting the flank from fast moving assault units - which is what I normally use them for.] Anti-tank is something I normally reserve a Annihilator for or the occasional dev squad I've been known to take.

On the deepstrike issue, if people think that the assault cannon is the balance issue maybe that's why they made the Lspeeders not be able to fire the turn they drop. So people won't *female dog* when speeders and terminators drop on the same turn in the same area [ish] and killed two squads. No of course the people who were able to do that are upset so no one can win. [Except the people who aren't getting double asscannoned, but they're facing marines so there most likely losing anyway - that's all I hear from my guard player friend. Waa - waa - waa.]

40K doesn't make a lot of sense most of the time, physics or rules wise anyway so I think it's just easy to accept that we can't/can do something and stop complaining that we can/can't do that thing. Just easier, sooo much easier.

For my Space Marine army I have two land speeder typhoons as my army is based around being a highly mobile force. I have found when fielding one or two that a good idea is to use it like a stealthy tank hunter.

Basically, keep it in cover until you are in postion to literally fly within a few inch's of an enemy and then blast it with the multimelta.

I know that people may cry that its a waste of points that way, but in every game I've played, on the next turn in which the speeder is out in the open, it gets blasted by the enemy because of its threat.

Bear in mind that I'm still trying out new tactics with this force so you may not think the Land Speeder Typhoon with multi-melta is worth the cost at 85pt per model.

Hope it helps
