Poor Yakface placed 33rd in the 40K singles. But he did place higher than Mannahnin (the 40k Codicer) though....

Well, I only decided to play in this tournament at the (relatively) last second and the only army I had lying around that was in a transportation-friendly mode were my Orks.

It's been over a year since I played with my Orks and the first game I played the rust really showed (I played the whole game thinking Ork rokkits had an 18" range).

Also, if I have one complaint with Adepticon its that two hours (including set-up) is simply nowhere near enough time for even a semi-horde army to complete their games. My first two games I only got to finish turn 3 and in my last game I got to turn 4 (and only because I had pretty much wiped out my opponent by that point).

Besides, the team tournie was my real focus for the weekend, and the singles tournament was just supposed to be a little bit of extra fun. Unfortunately, playing half a game at breakneck speed actually turns out not to be very much fun after all!

Edit:  As for the rules quiz in the tournament, I walked into the hall with only two minutes to go on the quiz, so I'm actually amazed that I was able to scratch out 6 points on it!

yakface's 40K rule #1: Although the rules allow you to use modeling to your advantage, how badly do you need to win your toy soldier games?
yakface's 40K rule #2: Friends don't let friends start a MEQ army.
yakface's 40K rule #3: Codex does not ALWAYS trump the rulebook, so please don't say that!

No offense is taken. I've worked enough of these to know that at the end of the day, odds are, someone isn't going to be happy with a decision that you made. That's all cool.

I think the point I was trying to make is that it is a time rushed process. 5 minutes a team with two people is still over 3 hours to judge and there isn't 3 hours to judge theme fairly for everyone. Judging would have to take place during game play, which would end up either distracting the players and taking away your focus, or possibly missing something you have as part of your theme...display base, fluff, being able to pick up and discuss minis.

We keep some things subjective to allow for teams to think outside the box. We have some set things we ask for because they are the "standard" of what has shown up before. We consult between ourselves to assure that we are within the same "points range" for a certain level of production. Yep, I am sure some things got by us or you would find some inconsistancies if you went back over with hindsight. We discussed things after we went through and thought of ways we could improve upon next year, so don't be surprised if next year's theme and comp feels slightly different than this year, or you score differently.

I think the other thing that you can do to help out is volunteer. Volunteer as a results sheet checker, or volunteer to help out in the fantasy pavilion. Doesn't even have to be on the same day as the 40K TT. A volunteer on Friday or Sat means that someone that would have had to work that day can now wind back a little, or play in an event instead and come to staff the TT a bit more relaxed and a bit less tired. Having both volunteered and played I can honestly say that working as staff is quite a bit more draining than playing in an event. When I'm playing, I just have to make sure my opponent and my self are having a good time. When you are working, you have 360 people that you want to have a good time.

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

Maybe you can give a bonus point to those who leave their army out the night before for judging?
