unfortunately the really short of it is VOT-spot check is required to target them the weapons systems mentioned specifically do not spot to target. its just semantics-spotting and seeing the target are the same thing. the SMS goes even further by saying that they can target any unit within 24" (thier range)reguardless of nightfight, LOS etc.. so for them it is-no spot check required to target these 2 rules are directly contradictory GW should have included something in the VOT rules as to how they are affected by things like indirect fire weapons and SMSs (which they eventualy had to do for the other "stealth' like special units and rules). which is why i expect an FAQ from GW eventually. i just wish they would think of these things before they put thier codex's into print. Take it for what this is worth, but Phill Kelly stated at the Los Vegas GT that the VOT does work against indirect fire and that will be in the FAQ. Hopefully he was not pulling my chain... Ok so I got a question? 1) What about the monolith? Does it have to roll to spot if the harlies are with in 12 inches and it is shooting at every unit with in 12 inches? 2) What about a single model armed with a flamer? Does it roll to spot? How about if it intentionally targets a unit behind the harlies that are obviously out of flamer range? Do the Harlies still get toasted when the template drops on top of them?

Do the Harlies still get toasted when the template drops on top of them? If the gun doesn't have suffient range to the target the shot misses, so this example couldn't work. Capt K

Bah, debatable with a flamer but I dont have my rulebook with me to start spouting page numbers, and I don't want to hijack the thread anyway. Ok, lets say the harlies are behind the targeted unit and they get covered by flamer splash and the target roll would have failed.

If the flamer is out of range of the target, it misses everything.
If the flamer is in range of its target, then it can hit the harlies. The flamer only targets one unit, and is restricted with having to cover as many models of the target unit it can, but can still hit other models.
The gauss flux arc does not target, so doesn't roll to see if they're in target range.

also, i find if i take more than 6, they destroy the enemy in the first round, meaning they get a nasty round of shootiness against them...
I believe it would turn into a 4/9 save, 1 - (2/3)(2/3) = 4/9
Thanks for the timely and prompt answer!
Really, 13 months to wait for your opinion was worth it!
