I always thought that a GM who let a dice roll destroy the role playing wasn't worth a crap. For me roleplaying was overcoming the impossible, not getting focused in on the mundane but finding the way out of the dungeon, when you had nothing and impossible odds against you.

roleplaying wasn't about how many caverns and dungeons of orcs and kobolds you could mow over, but how to get to the end without being overwhelmed by 100 kobolds in the common room.

it's a matter of perspective. i found the college, highshool crowd, even when I was that age, just too immature and only interested in collecting +5 defenders and other artifacts.. while I was more interested in delving into the character himself. Go figure, you end up gaming and hanging around similar types, so, You either find a new group or get swallowed up by the monkeys you complain about. the choice is up to you.. and your mileage may vary.

RPGs are best when you and your friends have played the characters for a very long time (I am talking longer campaigns, 40+ gaming hours).
When playing a character for a longer stretch of time you start to understand how he/she thinks and acts in different situations thus creating a much more enjoyable game for everybody. Your character has probably developed fobies and sustained crippling injuries + having "real" memories that is way better than some invented background story.

A good GM is more of a storyteller. When we play the GM is the one who roll the most dice (hidden) thus sometimes being able to modify scores in an appropriate way, resulting in characters not dying too fast/easy. Having a good time with friends while your characters evolve is the main thing for us, our characters are cracking jokes and doing wierd things - but still trying to keep alive.

Having just read Inquisitor Wars (again) I would love to form an Ing retinue with friends (the right friends = those who don't appreciate a "comic relief" character such as LOTR: Gimli, InqWars: Grimm or SW:JarJar).
