At 2500pts you also see things you might not other wise face in lower point tournies (3 Monoliths anyone). Being able to switch armies from round to round adds a further complexity to the local metagame also.

It looks like there are only 8-9 advancing from Austin, Texas. Including (in no particular order): Brandon S. (Space Marines) Chris L. (Eldar) Monty K. (Tyranids) Abe C. (Imperial Guard) Brad T. (Orks) Still waiting for the other stores. It doesn't sould like the competition was too stiff in San Antonio (where our regional are being held), so with any luck you'll see some of us in Baltimore. Anyone heard anything about the missions? I wasn't too pleased with the Ard Boyz 1 missions.

Posted By Orion_44 on 09/23/2007 11:03 AM In round two when you could bring troops on from a board edge of your choice (and started in reserve) even bolters could glance Eldar skimmers and those Nid lists were much easier to take down with no little bugs in the first turn. Around here it was ruled that you could only come in on your deployment zone table edge...Even though the mission obviously said differently...But there were other bad rules calls too. Would have REALLY changed the outcome of the game I played. (I missed a major victory by 2 vps...I would have nailed alot more stuff if I could have come in from any edge.) and zilla nids were nasty with that rule, as there were alot of stealers in the tourney I was at.

Yes with the missions being completely different from the generic dozen that you see with most of the RTT and GT a lot of different type of armies could do well. Mission one was interesting but 2 (any board edge) and 3 with the objective markers accounting for 2500 vp if you owned them was very interesting to say the least. If the missions at the regional events are as creative the results should be very interesting.

These missions are similar to the missions at Adepticon. We have been making creative missions for years and it really helps to even the playing field. People can not simply load up and expect a straight VP game when some armies excel at that and some struggle.
I can't believe an organiser would arbitrarily change the rules for the 2nd mission. It forces people to come forward and hurts armies that have overloaded on sit and shoot units that don't move. If you have an all lascannon foot guard army, then you will be assaulted from behind unless you move forward. Take that same foot guard army and diversify with some transports and you can protect your troops from assault. I have been saying for years that missions are an excellent resource for influencing comp. I'd like to see the winners of Skyths tourney trying to get that same ruling in the next round.
As for me, I did take a sit and shoot foot army and in round 2 I played Godzilla Nids. I didn't notice he could come on my board edge until turn 2 and I thought I was toast. He had 8 Stealers assault my Grey Knight Terminators when they came right in. It was a miracle he didn't roll a single rend and I lost 1 termie. I came back at him and whiffed to the tune of 1 dead stealer, then Holocaust hit and the stealers were purged. I totally lucked out and it ended up winning me the game. He should have had me.
I predict round 2 will see a scenario that hinders all skimmer armies.

Hm, with the "bad call" complaints lots of you guys are making, this supposed "national series of tournaments" should be a very good reason for GW to institute a test for judges/refs like the DCI for the Magic TCG. Too bad it'll never happen.

Missions? In Detroit we basically had straight up VP fights, no objectives or escallation and the first two missions were alpha level. Now I feel left out.

Game 1 had a lot of extra scatter on ord, summoning, deep strike, etc. Also had a warp fire template that was placed about each turn by the opposing player- damaged S5 AP -
Game 2 had a lot of reserves and they could show up on ANY board edge. Nothing was safe unless you were brave enough to DS in the middle.
Game 3 had high value loot counters. Considering that each player could put 1 down anywhere they wanted, that usually meant in the back of their deployment zone.
Needless to say it shook things up. THIS IS GOOD. I get sick of people saying "Ohhh I'll only do THIS or THAT". Heck we have people here that won't play anything but Recon. If you can't make an army that adapts, then you need to address why you're so ridgid.

(Yes, another post from me- the editor won't let me edit previous ones to add in extra thoughts. See: slowed) The sportsmanship at the event was really good. Maybe people were nice to each other because they didn't HAVE to be nice to each other. W/o sportsmanship there was no feeling forced to super nice to each other. "Oh yesss! Your 3 color marines are sooo awesome!! I really like the way you felt free enough to kinda just slop it on! VERY unique! " None of that. We were just happy to be there, and I think it made for better games. Interesting to see how this plays out in the 2nd round of the tourneys since the stakes are higher with folks having to travel.

Interesting to see how this plays out in the 2nd round of the tourneys since the stakes are higher with folks having to travel. You know, it something I've noticed at the AdeptiCon Gladiator tournaments as well...from my perspective, the lack of sportsmanship scoring has generally led to better sportsmanship as opposed to the other events (not that the other events are rife with poor sportsmanship, just that the lack of sports judging seemed to have a largely beneficial effect.) Of course, there are always exceptions (and those exceptions tended to be particularly noticable) but in general, it seemed to result in people being nicer to each other. Of course, I think a part of this was that you go to a Gladiator or an Ard Boyz tournament expecting tooled-up, beatstick armies.

Oh, and by the way, I loved the missions. I'll be doing a full batrep on my blog at ministrategery, but I thought the missions were very interesting and presented some unique challenges. The VP bonuses possible in rounds 2 & 3 made for some seriously interesting games, and rewarded careful, agressive play. Having the objectives worth the VPs that they were made them worthwhile objectives to contend for.
As a teaser, in round 3, I probably did something far different than what everyone else did - I placed my lootage counter right next to my opponent's lootage counter, which put both of them right in my opponent's deployment zone. I gambled that forcing him to devote his efforts to defend his home quadrant would let me claim the two adjacent ones, which is basically what ended up happening. At the end of the game, neither of us could claim the lootage counters (as some turbo-boosting destroyers moved in at the last moment to contest them) but a throw-away unit I parked in an adjacent table quarter gave me enough bonus VPs to get the major victory and the points I needed for the overall.

Do you know how many store owners would tell someone to @#$% up a rope when told they had to take a test to be 'qualified' to hold a tournament in their own store?

In mission three everyone was supposed to place the loot counters before deployment zones were chosen. For instance I played an eldar army and he placed first. I then placed in the adjacent table quarter. I won the strategy roll (even though he had an autarch) and chose one of the markers as my zone. This made him shoot for the close marker and ignore my own. If I had failed to win the deployment zone I wouldn't have minded because I feel better on the attack than on defense.

Springfield, Missouri - Metagames Unlimited Results I had to miss this one, but a bunch of good buddies were in it. I guess the overall winner had a really nasty 700pt Chosen squad that caused all kinds of hell. He couldn't make it to the semi-finals, so he gave the golden ticket to #4...who was a Necron player. 1) Insanely nasty Chaos (whose list is no longer viable thanks to new Codex). 2) Dark Angels 3) Iron Warriors (Again, no longer usable with new Codex) 4) Necrons

A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve is someone who, at one point in his/her life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.

In Atlanta at B & R games the result was:
1. Shooty Necrons (me) 2. Mech Tau 3. Can't remember third...might have been Mech Eldar? 4. Nidzilla list (would have been third if I hadn't skunked him in round 1. 4th by one BP)

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).
