A combo that I've come to hate is 2x6 harlies and 1x5 dragons w/Yriel attached.

The FD and Yriel dismount, he detaches w/the FD between him and possible assualters, they fry seperate vehicles, and he countercharges the assualt on the dragons.

The 30mm bases are really too small. Bikes, as models with a toughness, have all measurements made to and from the base. This can be a bit inconvenient and counter-intuitive in play when your model overhangs the base by more than an inch. Getting models into contact for assault, is a particular PITA.

I’ve seen people use a bunch of different options for jetbikes. 50mm flying bases are definitely most common, though there’s definitely a bunch of folks out there who still have the old 30mm because that’s what the models used to be packaged with. I’ve seen people use 40mm & 50mm regular round bases and use the flying stem to give the model the appropriate height. Both work pretty well, though the 40mm still has a bit of overhang, and the 50mm has the aforementioned huge footprint. Ground bikes come with 25x50mm cav bases, which are a good match for the model’s shape and footprint, but the rectangular shape doesn’t really fit in well with 40k. The best solution I’ve seen for jetbikes is an oval shape, like what Gale Force Nine sells (see below). This is what my jetbikes are on, and it both looks cool and works well on the table.

@5 Dragons and Yriel in Falcon

Suggested this a while back and its the first time I hear it from anyone else. It has worked rather well for me but at the moment I tend towards Reaper/Lance-Autarch and a Fire Prism. The obvious advantage is that its considered a lot less cheesy (only 2 Falcons and no special character) and is imo even tactically superior:

Most tanks die to Falcon sideshots and the ones who dont are either not too scary (Landraider) or dragonproof (Monolith). Thus a Prism is a proper substitute for Dragons/Falcon that adds a template threat to deal with teleporting Necrons etc.. The bike autarch on the other hand shoots until he assaults while Yriel does nothing early game. Hes also more mobile etc..

It's not a question of being snookered, so much as the requirement that I play with them on bases the size they came with.

CURRENT printings of jetbikes come with 50mm flying bases. I'm happy for you, if yours predate that particular issue, especially as 40k lacks the "base size" rulesheet they put out for Fantasy.

ahh but see, that raises the question. If the current ones have 50mm bases, would an opponent make a fuss about mine on 30mm?

Now I guess I'll have to buy a new one to see what it comes with

To be completely honest areas (I have been in) require you to use the base that is currently used for that model (as the minimum), reagrdless of what the original size was.

edit added italics. original statement was less accurate. I haven't been most areas.

I'd never give you flak about it (but then, my daemonettes are all on 25mm square bases...which are, in fact, larger than 25mm circle bases, so in retrospect I guess I'm okay), though I suppose a really snarky tourney-goer might complain, which puts it in the hands of the judge who didn't want to hear about it in the first place.

I tried the GW online store, but they don't have a parts breakdown for the box anymore. I suppose you could ask at your local store if they'd open one and look.

Looking thru the latest codex, the shining spears are on the larger bases, all other pics show the smaller. And the 2006-07 catalog was absolutely no help.

Well...most areas I've been to don't require you to respend money just for the sake of spending money. We have several players that still have old termies and chaos termies on 25mm bases, and no one says anything. If you bought the model and it came with that base, there is no reason why you should have to buy another base just because a newer model or revised printing of a model has one. That's just spending money needlessly.
