You mistate. Routinely and reliably is more accurate, dear sir of the dark lances suck faction. Drive through.

The dark lance is a great weapon, nowhere did I say otherwise. Your pretend outrage does not change the fact that you fail to understand basic statistics, and their relevance to the real world. The math to discover the chance of a dark lance to kill a monolith is grade school level. The understanding is junior high level mathematical theory. So before you keep wowing us with your marvelous abilities to do random crap, why don't you learn how to do something you should have been able to do since 8th grade. I understand you want to be an internet tough guy, but at least humor us by showing us you understand some of the foundational theory that the game is based on.

Well to be fair, the comment that dark lances are not very good at killing monoliths is really silly. The dark eldar don't have any other ranged heavy weapons so its not like they have a choice between a dark lance and say another tank busting weapon for their raiders. They also always bring a ton of dark lances, which can usually down a monolith through volume of fire. It's not like the dark eldar can bring a s9 or 10 weapon.
Of course, the thread is about shining spears, so there you go.

whitedragon wrote:A dark lance has just as much chance to nail a monolith as any other S8 weapon, what's your point gdurant?
Dark Eldar can sure take alot of 'em too.
I wasn't saying dark lances suck. I still play with my dark eldar. Win with them all the time. My point was general probability states that you have to sink a lot of DL shot into a monolith before you bring it down. I was paralelling this to the Shining Spears situation. You can eventualy kill them. And if your Stelek you might even kill them in the first round of shooting with BS 2 lasguns. My point is monoliths and spears are bullet magnets because they are dangerous people spend alot of resources shooting at them which pull pressure of the rest of my army.
As for statistics in 40k, my same tau playing friend consistently rolls boxcars when shooting my falcons. But thats statistical clumpling for you. making sure remote things happen at the worse possible time.
As an aside though Stelek your obviously a good general. I've seen you give sound advice to everyone who asks. And from what I gather you have a playable force of just about every army. Thank you for being a part of this disccusion, but why do you just throw the math out the window?

I threw his math out the window for several reasons. Here are a few:
Luck happens.
Dice (physically) over time roll higher on their probabilities.
I'm a believer in chaos theory, fractal statistics, probability modeling, etc and don't just go with the math from when I was a kid. I'm not being hoitie totie here, I passed my physics and advanced mathematics classes in college and the only place I've found use for them is in 40K.
The real world breaks common theories all the time. Ask any scientist. Why should I believe I'm superior to common knowledge?
I am unusually lucky.
What makes a unit in 40K so good as to beat probability must be considered along with the army that unit is in. Most people don't bother, and my opinion of their opinion is thus lowered.
I hope I've answered your questions.

I just got off the phone with chaos theory, fractal statistics, and probability modeling and they say you're full of ****. Seriously, I'd love to see you try to explain how you believe yourself to be 'lucky' in the context of any of the mentioned theories and methods. Bonus points if you can relate the discussion to shining spears.

No, real life never differentiates from the laws of physics. Sorry, I also have completed a Bachelors in Physics, so I am a scientist telling you that you are completely incorrect. Now, either you can accept reality, or you can go back to playing with the pink unicorn that lives in your garage, because anything else is incompetent trolling.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k. Rule #1 - BBAP
