Bit of advice (from experience) if you go Death Korp:
Mind the fragility!
I know it has been said a number of times already, but this is a huge point for me, so I'll stress it to you (The depression over so many damaged models is what is preventing me from finishing my DKOK army right now.)
These are things you might not think about.
Their boots. Take a close look at them. The bandages make for a nice effect, but you know what else it does? It essentially scores the model at the ankles about 10 times. You will lose feet. Even the simple act of gluing and clipping will oft times cause you to snap a foot off. Not a huge deal as the break is usually clean and you can just reglue, and it doesn't happen THAT often. Just remember that, as they may snap clean off their bases...
The Bayonets. These are the thinnest little bits of resin you'll ever see. I'd advise avoiding these things altogether. No matter how you store them, these will break and bend.
Dynamic poses. I started off using very dynamic poses for my DKoK (the Advancing squad really encourages this) but I've since found them unable to fit properly in GW army cases. Not usually a problem as I just kinda pull the foam around the model to accomidate. This has broken a number of my soldiers. Now I sad...
The guns. Take special note of the flimsy, tiny little barrels of their Lasguns. If you don't break it off in assembly, you'll bend or break it somewhere else, I guarantee it. I've found that using bits of brass rod or even plastic cadian barrels work as good replacements.
Their spades also seem to enjoy breaking. Easy fix, but, something worth noting.
Some models have huge blocks attached to their feet where the Resin was poured. Sometimes this can be an issue, and I'd advise against using clippers to get rid of this. You'll lop off a foot. Might work great for nice trenchfoot conversions though.
Just my own personal gripe: The special weapons choices suck. If you don't use a flamer or grenade launcher you're basically down a soldier. And the Melta and Plasma upgrades only come in the Command Squad. You won't need THAT many command squads (I don't care how cool the JO is!). So you'll likely need to scrounge up some GW meltas and plasmas.
The question is, are all these problems worth it for such cool models?
The answer is: Undoubtedly. Go Death Korp!

I think they're trying to press home the fluffiness of the force, rather than game-effectiveness. Remember that in the IA campaign books, they tend to be last stands, massive slugfests, or all-out capture and holds between non- SM forces.
Heck, look at IA4's "Take and Hold-Generatorum III" mission. The heaviest things in there are Tyranid Warriors+Lictors, 2x Drop Sentinels, a Valkyrie, and a Vulture. No lascannons, just multi-lasers, stuff of that nature.
FW is about the spirit of the game, not the RAWR I WIN INSTANTLY bit

@ Alex- I appreciate all the points to the fragile state of the DKK models. I have noted them and I take them into great consideration. I just dont know why GW cant make bada$$ models like FW (IG wise). DKK look alot like SL (Steel Legion) I know, but SL are going to be a pain to,
A) Buy, considering the fact that they dont sell the squads anymore
B) having the metal models, paint tends to rub off them if handled too often
C) I like the DKK HWs because of how they look like they belong in WWI with the metal tires, and I cant find models that have tires that resemle that to buy just the bits I need.
And the DKK models just look alot more of what kinda of IG army Id do...German WWI...and I know SL resembles that, but DKK takes it that extra step with the helmets, the gas masks look better, and the HWs like I explained before...

Steel Legion seems to be more of an amalgation of WWII German paras and panzergrenadiers, in my view.
Regarding resin:
Your #2 reason also happens with resin quite often, so you'll have to be very careful when painting them.

Hah. Yeah, it's a pain, I didn't realize it until I was painting my test heavy weapons for my Gudrunites with the Cadian respirator kits. Somehow I'd rubbed the paint on the back of the helmet off, so I had to go and redo it.
I'm sure there's a trick to doing it, but I just don't know it.

Well... I dont know what to do...spend a crap load of money to buy something thats probably going to break, or spend a crap load of money to buy SL and convert them to resemble DKK, but have their own flavor...

Honestly, resin doesn't break THAT often if you treat it right. Just think of it as metal models that are a bit more fragile, and you're not far off at all.

Well I think of it like this, it seems like 8/10 people say resin breaks too easy, its too fragile, something along those lines and they've gotta be right

Drop me a PM, and I'll send you one of my unpainted DKoK miniatures, if it reaches you ok, and doesn't break during delivery see what you think of the quality in the flesh and whether its sturdy enough for you. If its "ok" then go and spend and be happy, if not, then....spend on something else!!

For my resin stuff I have a nice Army Transport bag with the swappable foam trays that I got as a birthday present awhile back, and it works really well even for the big stuff.

If you can afford them, they're definitely worth it. The models are just awesome.
Just be prepared though, working with resin is different than plastic and metal.. you have to clean each and every teeny little piece or you risk the paint not sticking.
I invested in 2 units of Grenadiers and I love em. Also got 2 tank commanders to use for chimeras for each unit eventually. Like someone else said the special weapons choices could be better. I emailed FW once and asked if you could get just 1 model to special order the unit you want, and they said no... so in order to give my units plasma guns I had to convert them with normal lasguns and marine plasma pistols, then I just cut off the flamer or grenade launcher and glued it to their hands.. looks good enough for me, but I was kinda scared doing it since they were so expensive. Also one problem with the Grenadiers is the cables that goes from the guns to the backpacks is really short and hard to get it to fit right.. in the end I just left mine off. Some day I'll make my own with a guitar string maybe

Yeah, i was noticing the cables on the Storm Troopers myself, wondered if they'd be a pain. But one thing you can always do, is if you have bits, use them to help convert your weapons the way you need them...Im sure you knew that.

i've just about finished building my Death Korps army and i have to say they're worth every single penny. The models are beautiful and so full of character. As far as them being brittle and flimsy i havn't had a problem yet and i've put together about 6 infantry squads and 2 hq squads not a single problem, but i havn't put bayonets on the guns. like everyone else has said they require alot of cleaning or else the paint doesnt stick but i found that giving all the models a once over with some matte clear coat works just as well if not better. As for the question of are they worth the money, thats a personal decision. I' started with space marines and just got to 3000 points when i started my death korps. but now i want to sell my space marines and go krieg all the way. it wont be cheap to go krieg but to me it is well worth it to put those guys on the table and have everyone in the room go oh man can i see them they look so nice.
Be warned starting a Death Korps of Krieg army is like starting heroin you just want more and more and more.

Death_Master wrote:I only have Death Korp troops at the moment and I have to agree they look absolutely brilliant.
When mine arrived a couple of the lasguns were deformed with parts missing (through molding) and several of the arms had to be cut down in places to make them fit the bodies. One other thing to be aware of is the unbelievably brittle nature of resin. I've already snapped off a bayonet and several others looked suspect after a sneeze hitting them.
As for worth it: If you want the quality look that not an awful lot of people have, then yes. In terms of the cost of the models, then I would have to say no.

Redmond: I know I am just one voice of many but heed my words.
I am a FW junkie. I own a great deal of the Tallarn Resin Heavy Weapons (as well as several grand of tanks and stuff) and am very happy to say none on my heavy weapon troopers have broken.
It is all in how you use them, and more importantly how you transport them!!!
If you buy the FW DKoK, buy a good army transport case, preferably Sabol, or those new Battlefoam cases.
With a good case like these, where your models won't move in transport or hit other models, it will help your models lifespan a great deal.
As a member of the USMC you know a great deal about attention to detail (as my Basic training in the Canadian Forces taught me the same) so make sure you take care of all the details that go along with an army of this nature.
Play with some care, transport your models with care and just generally take some care around them, and they won't break like other people seem to think they do.
As an aside a friend of mine (he too did a good deal of time in the Canadian Forces) has a very very large collection of Death Korps and he has had next to no troubles with them, as he takes care when building, painting, playing and transporting them.
Best of luck in this new army if you choose to do it.
