RE: the legs.
Yea, the whole dowel rod thing going on there isn't going to be the final product. I just happened to have a mess of those from one of my wife's projects lying around when I was poking at things. I actually got some cool I-beam styrene I am going to probably end up using, since it will be really sturdy and allow space for wiring and pistons, etc.

And yes! It is a merkava! I got it to make into a baneblade pimp sled for my inquisitors, but worries of the scale and "biggerizing" that would be needed made me decide to make the walker for the game coming up.

Glad you recommend the 1.0mm plasticard; that pack in the pic is that size. I have a hard time not equating bigger with better, so I couldn't bring myself to get anything less than 1.0mm. I almost bought 3.5, but backed myself from the abyss in time.

Well, I am turning in early, so I can work my ass off tomorrow on this bad boy! Hopefully enough of my bits have come that I can meaningfully work on the top. Otherwise I will make the arms and start paneling the top. Because I am Irish enough that everything needs paneling.

Alright, one morning down!
After two hours thinking about how to do the arms while listening to Team America (f**k yea!) I did this:

No, not "took a blurry photo" (well, not just), but put little shoulder points on it. Playing around a little with the poster tack, I am lookin at something like this:

Honestly, I am not certain I like it. I am thinking it might look better if I changed the angle of the "elbow" to have the gun hanging straight down, instead of cocked at an angle. I am probably also going to end up putting either an armor plate, a banner or both over it to cover the arm a bit. In addition I intend wires and pipes etc to make it look more gothic. But still, spending two hours on that made me a little less than happy.

So after a shower and a walk to the post office, it was time for "This Old Warmachine."

This week on This Old Warmachine, we are going to show you how to frame a a superheavy's chasis!

Next week on This Old Warmachine, Norm will show us how to build a lovely dining room armoire for your Warlord!

I gotta take a break for a bit. 5 hours of not really getting much done is aching my brain.

Ok I think I figured out what was bothering me so much with the arms. It wasn't the angle, and what not, but rather the fact they are terribly front heavy in a visual sense. Nine giant barrels backed by a shoe box. So I am working on making suitably heavy backs to them, which worked out pretty well.

Until I started getting burned out, and spilled an entire bottle of brush on superglue. Let me tell you, get a bunch of that stuff on your fingers and it gets HOT when it dries. I managed to get most of it poured back into the bottle, and only ruined about half a sheet of styrene thanks to having a bunch of water right there. It really killed my will to do anything else model related.

So I made some bread. Pictures of that WIP are forthcoming. No plans for today; work and WoW obligations, as well as feeling like I have a bad hangover, probably due to glue inhalation.

HEhehe yea, he's a pain!

I hope to get my Cities of Death city here sooner or later. I got all the other stuff I ordered that night but that. I want a few sconces and poles and stuff to mix things up a little.

I also want a pony to ride to the game.

You're gonna need it, particularly if it's the biting kind - loads of orkses to chomp on!

Also, props to Studder for quoting and reposting his own post

OT: Good call on beefing up the back portion of the gun arm, it's looking quite tiny in comparison to the knight's body. I suggest gratuitous ammo hoppers / ejection ports ...

The arms are definitely going to be bigger. Well, ok, the arms won't be (but will have some piston type things and wires) but they will remain the stubby little buggers they are. The guns though, oh yes, they will be big.
The demo box I made for the rest of the hellblaster etc. is about 1.25" long, and 1" tall. I will post some pics when I get home tonight. The extra size REALLY helps, not only by balancing the giant barrels in the front, but making the weapon look more self contained, instead of needing a giant arm or piles of ammo feeds and belts. Plus it will give me a nice place to put =I= symbols and the like. Now, if I can only make one more without spilling glue all over myself again, I will be happy. I had SUCH a head ache the next day. It was like a super glue hang over. Also, I can't remember my wife's name. That hasn't become an issue yet...

Hopefully I will get my bitz order with the statues and the unfortunate girl who will be sliced up to pilot this thing this week. Once I have those and know how they will fit in, I can finish off the pipes on top. Then it will just be a question of making the legs and adding the bling and bitz to trick this bad boy out. (I need to make a tiny little X-Box 360 for the back seat and ground effects... Add some hydraulics... Aquire a few ho's...)

It sounds like so little when I say it like that, but I suspect that unless I call off sick from work, I am not getting this thing more than primed before the 26th. ETA: 12 days.

Cred for that much though, primed redemptor is rock solid in my book. Also, when it's all primed black isn't it like at least 50% fully painted by Sisters' standards? :S

What am I doing to prepare for APOC II: DEATH BY DATASHEET? Why, painting 1000 points of ogres of course!

no worries salvage, remember, your gonna be in charge of Inquisitor Kamode and his 6 eversor assassins.

OT: primed is well enough sister's guy, im expecting a msss of stuff to not even be primed for this one, i understand people (not including me) have lives other then assembling and painting, even me, with school starting on Wed. will be dropping down to only painting a few hours a day now :(

im glad you dropped its rear armor down to 10, seems pretty standard for a walker of that size. heck, my warlock titan is 11 in the back and its a 2500 point model.

Okay, quick update while I eat and recharge the camera batteries.

Here's the fix I figured for the guns (minus fiddly bits, just the box.)

I really am pretty happy with how it came out, considering I just started drawing on plasticard.
A scale pic:

"Quickly men, two arms!"

Now, those are just stuck on there. I used some green stuff at both ends of the little rod to change the angle. When that dries and my camera's battery is back up I will take a pic. Basically just to make it look like it is consciously targeting things, as opposed to standing there sleeping. A defunct wireless mouse is going to provide some wires and cabling for the arms (ironic, I know) and some bits and a nice ejection port on the side will round them out.

Dave: Is the Inquisitor riding the Porceline Throne?
I hopefully will get him primed and at least some base Foundation color on the banners etc., and some brass on the pipes. The layering and such might wait.

Salvage definitely did a rockin job on the Datasheet for it too. Next you need to make me a datafax for a four armed, 10" tall penitent engine. Make it so!

Also: Apoc II: Death By Datasheet definitely wins my vote for the new title.

Dude, what's wrong with you?

You're working in styrene plastic, you should be using Testors model cement (in the orange tube).

If you're using super glue, you're just making things more difficult for yourself.

I suppose what is wrong is that I never used styrene before. *shrug* The super glue works nicely so far, though I will try the orange testors I have lying around. I wasn't aware that one was so much better than the other.

In other news, I am getting a little twitchy about where my bits are from the WarStore. The orders are confirmed, but haven't been shipped yet. I was really hoping to get them by today or tomorrow...

At anyrate, I am going to try and get the legs together tonight. At least then I can start adding fiddly bits to the arms and lower parts.

By the by, I got Uria Jacobson for the priest in the cockpit in case the flagellant bits don't work out. UJ looks pretty good screaming and poining his shot gun, and the strap on it bends around the edge perfectly.

Dave: He needs some reading material. He obviously is going to be on the can for quite some time.

OH, OK.

I do a lot of conversion work in styrene for plastic models, and I find the Testors gel cement (in the tube) to be the best overall. It dries to a very strong joint, which is very helpful for playable models.

If you're doing pure non-gaming display work, then brush-on liquid cement is better.

Ok, I didn't post any pics last night, but I actually got a fair amount done. Just not enough that it looks like anything.

I figured out how to do the legs, and what to use for feet, and how to make the whole thing stable.

Quick question though for those of you wise in the ways of styrene: is there a good way to get it to cornform to a round shape/surface? I have cut shin armor for the redemptor out of 1.0mm styrene, and wrapped it tightly to bend it a bit, but I am still having trouble with it trying to go back to reasonably flat. Can I heat it to get it to bend more willingly? Is there another trick to get it to do what I want? I am thinking I will have to pin it or something otherwise, and I don't really want to have to do that.

hair dryer, wear some gloves, it gets got. if your in a pinch you can use a candle, also wear gloves. if you can get a cylinder around the same shape you want, you can clamp down the styrene and quasi heat it to its desired form.

Ok I will give that a shot tonight. Conveniently I want it to be about the same curvature as a film canister, so I can probably swing something that way. Is boiling water perhaps a good option to, or does that get too hot?

Used Boiling water to good effect with D&D Plasitcs and mageknight/heroclix figures, but haven't tried it with sheet styrene.

It doesn't even need to be boiling. Sometimes just reallt hot tap water is enough.

Soften it in the water.
Mold it into shape.
Use elastics to strap it to the base form if you can.
Run it under cold water to set it

What they said.

Tho really, I don't like to work with curves because they're a pain to set and a pain to reinforce for sturdiness / rigidity.

I prefer to build multi-faceted / angled parts because they build faster and stronger.

So, work on the Redemptor has largely stalled of late. My actual job is burning me out pretty well, so all I managed to do these past few pictureless days is produce two legs, which came out just as I intended. The trouble is, I still dislike them. So this Friday and Saturday I hope to create new legs that don't suck, as well as recreating the pelvis. In addition, I believe my bitz orders will arrive today or tomorrow, so I should be able to get the top done.
Speaking of bitz, going through my boxes yesterday revealed a shocking, almost heretical, shortage of Sister bitz. Plenty of little icon boxes, but no real imperial eagles or the like. So I am improvising a bit there, but nothing of any great success.
I will post pics of where things are now when I get home, and then spend the next two days working feverishly on it. Now that my paying job should be cleaned up for a time, I won't go home, stare at some plastic, and promptly glue myself together before giving up and going to bed. Grumble grumble. (It's a secret to everyone!)

Hooookay! Here are some pics of what I did the past few days, with what I did this evening quick.

Plus side, I actually kind of like the legs again after I put a mess of rivets on and buffed them out a little. I am definitely remaking the pelivis, and probably using a hexagonal box for the hip.

Now, guns. I don't know if I want to put the little grey icon with ejection port (assuming a better e-port I won't spend 2 seconds making) or the winged I thing I made up the other night. Assume it will have a skull in the I, since I have a few to cut out of icon shrines, but haven't done yet. So, toss some opinions my way.

Icon and ejection port

Or scratch pretty thing.

Well, let me know what you think. I am going to go put a mess of rivets on the other leg, and the other arm etc.

Speaking of which, you might notice that arm is no longer attached. That was one of the many dubious accomplishments from Thursday night that made me decide it was time to just go to bed and read for a little instead of breaking anything else. :(

I like the legs, very nice and gothic looking, to enhance the "dark age of technology" look you could add some wiring and extra pistons on the inside.
The icon on the cannon box doesn't really do it for me, your scratchbuild wing looks a lot better, although imho a fleur-de-lys from the immolator sprue would also work. In both of the latter cases you probably don't have enough space for an ejection port on the side of the cannon box, it could be worth a try to put the ejection port, possibly in an outward angle, at the bottom of said box.

I'm very curious on how the pelvis and hips are going to look.
Keep up the good work and keep us posted!

Right. Not the most productive evening, but everything I did I like the look of.
So, without further ado, here's the new pelvis and left hip!

I really prefer the rounded pelvis. Even though it is almost exactly the same height, it looks a lot slimmer to me due to being rounded. It is also a good bit narrower. I am quite happy with the octogonal hip too. It's a little more of a pain to make, but it makes a strong attachment easy, and gives lots of nice angles for rivets and any framing I want to add.

Now, the guns. I am thinking I kind of like the little I and wing too, but I am not 100% by any means. I REALLY wanted to use the fluer d'lys from the immolator doors, but they are about 1/8" too long. I really wish I had thought about that when I was making it, but alas, I am slowed and thought I had a lot more random girl gubbins than I do. I tried making one from plasticard or GS, but failed hard. The little I thing I made wasn't too hard, and it fills up a lot of the space, which is kind of nice I think. I do like the extra details on the premade icons. I am not terribly worried about the ejection ports. I kind of think they look neat, but honestly this bad boy probably fires caseless, since the gun narrows before going into the barrels. Big shrug here. I am too tired to think about it hard.

I think tomorrow I am going to finish the other leg in the morning, then start playing with the pilot chick. I don't know exactly what I will do, but I am excited to take this chick and jam some wires into her head and strap her to a cold stone stab. For the Emperor.
