I like O_S's Wraithlord conversion. His paint scheme seems very Nazi as opposed to Germanic/WWII and the change of logo to a cross from a crooked cross isn't that much of a leap.

I'm in the 'do what you like with your toy soldiers' camp. That said IMO the greatest personality defect a person can have is to have a 'take me as I am or not at all attitude', and then complain when people say "Not at all".

This thread is being reopened to allow the original poster to continue to post updates on his army and get feedback from the community.

It is important to note that previously in this thread a user intentionally created a profile for the specific intent of confusing others and inciting hostility. All of that user's posts have been deleted, that account and IP have been banned from this site. Please do not confuse the trolling from this dummy account with the original user, GMMStudios.

Anytime you find a someone's army in poor taste in your opinion it behooves you to let them know exactly why as they will obviously encounter exactly the same reactions in the real-world when they use their army.

But as with everything we try to promote in this forum, make your objections known with politeness and civility.

If you would like to further discuss (in a calm and thoughtful manner) the appropriateness of real-world iconography in miniature gaming, please visit THIS thread.

Thanks.

I'm going to have to agree. Enthusiasm has its place, but sometimes, it's a worthwhile excercise to step back and reassess where one is in terms of overall skills. I also recommend working on your Greenstuff sculpting some more. If you haven't already, fabricating or acquiring some sculpting tools is a good move. Myself, I use a variety of plastic shapes, sprue offcuts, pieces of photoetched brass, toothpicks and bits of wire to accomplish a variety of effects. It's important to work slowly, perfecting one piece, then setting it aside to harden before starting on the next, especially with layered parts.

For freehand logos, some thin masking tape can be a good purchase. It allows you to make straight, sharp edges with ease, which can be used to produce a striking effect on its own, or with some patience and a sharp blade, painting masks for more complex geometric shapes. I recommend the Tamiya brand, which is available in a variety of widths and has an adhesive gentle enough not to mark or lift paint it's placed on.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

I won't comment on the symbols in this thread, but you got some interesting conversions there.

your paintjob needs some serious work though.

OR, you could leave them the way you have painted them if you really do like them. Just because people have problems with the "theme" of your army doesn't mean you have to change anything to make them happy. them. Make them buy you new minis if they don't like it. That's just my 2 cents. However, I would suggest thinning the paints a little.

I wouldn't give up on the army. It's got a good bit of potential.

It does show a lot of character on your part that you're making concessions to not offend your opponents and the community and trying to change your chapter symbol to help avoid any unintended consequences.

As for your paint. I would suggest that you go back and clean up much of the highlighting lines. They feel somewhat sloppy right now, and a little bit of black paint could clean them up nicely for you.

You also might try thinner highlights. It still gives a nice hard edged highlight, but more control over your details.

Oh Christ.

Don't be that way. Dakka has a long history of being somewhat abrasive. Don't let it bother you. I think your model theme is just fine and non-objectionable. If others object to it because they see bigotry if they look at it... just... so.... then that's their problem. You can find bigotry anywhere you want if you look hard enough and make enough assumptions.

I do think you should keep practicing the painting and converting techniques though. I like the how well you executed the dreadlord.

@open_sketchbook:

Whenever we share something and invite feedback, sometimes, we don't get the feedback that we wanted.

You're getting feedback, and it isn't all positive. But you're getting the truth.

As the owner of the army, it's up to you to decide to what extent, if any, that feedback is valid and relevant, and whether or not you should make any changes based on it.

Personally, I'm not entirely happy with what you've done, as the insignia and themes are "challenging" to do well while not offending.

But they are *your* models, and they are a reflection on you and what you stand for. If you're OK with how things are, then all is well. If not, then take your time and don't do anything rash - remember, this is the Internet.

I will share a thought to consider going back to exclusively WW1 or Prussian iconography and symbols. In my case, my Guard have a Panzer-heavy theme, but I will be using pre-WW2 visuals.

Seriously, don't worry about some negative feedback. It's only the internet, and you cannot be held responsible for the preconcieved notions others hold regardless of your intentions and motives.

I'll share a true story, from here on Dakka even (2 versions ago, I think). I was talking about my newest veteran sarge I painted up. I play Dark Angels, and part of their fluff states that they roam the galaxy to recruit from a bunch of different worlds. For that reason, I often paint up my sergeants to be of different races. An irish redhead here, tan blondie there, and a few pale w/ black hair. Well, my newest vet sarge I painted up as a black man. He came out nicely. And as I do with all of my vet sarges, I named him. His name is Jerome. I posted here on Dakka that my vet sarge is a handsome black man named Jerome, and was INSTANTLY labeled/libeled by a few as a racist.

What they didn't know, though, is that my wife named him. It went like this.

"Honey? What should I name my new vet sarge?"
"You're such a geek. I don't care."
"Seriously honey, what should I name him?"
(she didn't even look, as she was in a different room at the time, didn't know he was a handsome black man.)
"Jerome."

Because of some coincidence, a few chose to think of me a racist, forgetting that I'm actually a member of a minority.

It all boils down what preconcieved notions others bring to the plate, and whether you chose to give that any credance. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it.

Although I might be derailing this thread would you mind enlighting me about why black sarge + Jerome is racist? I donĀ“t get it why a black man can not choose Jerome as his name (or any other name he wants)

Because to certain small minded people, Jerome is a stereotypical "black man" name, and certain people find boogiemen anywhere they look.

Oh, and I'm a member of a different minority. Hispanic.

I can only say that it is pretty racist to deny a person the right to call themselves whatever they want no matter their race.

Your Dreadnought turned out really well. The GSing needs some love, but for a first time attempt at bulking that guy out, you did awesome. Keep practicing and you'll be rocking out some pimping armies in no time.
